MS Says My Copy Is Not Genuine
May 28, 2006
Last year I had work done on my laptop and the shop replaced my old Windows 98 with Windows XP. Now I am told by MS my XP is not genuine and no updates can be sent to me. I get a message every 10 minutes asking if i want to "get genuine" or "resolve later". If I click get genuine, will I be charged a fee for a new XP? What should I do?

I've always downloaded the "Windows Update" that pops up on the task bar, and it suspects that I'm using a non-genuine copy of windows. Can this be because I share the same copy of Windows with a couple other different people? Anyhow, my main point is, how do I uninstall those updates that I've installed so this "you may be a victim of a counterfeit copy of Windows" which appears at startup.I was going to try system restore, but if someone had a better solution, it'll be great.

I've purchased new HP notebook with preinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2. When today I tried to update my copy of Windows using Microsoft update service the Genuine Windows Validation program told me I'm using an illegal version of MS Windows, I've tried to reactivate my copy of OS by changing registry key and running But when I entered the OEM license number (as per HP OEM sticker) and attempted to activate, I was politely informed that the key number was mistyped (message number 45128) and invalid, yet the activation works when I'm not change serial key, The guys from HP customer support say it is Microsoft's problem.

A friend bought this computer at a yard sale for me. It did not come with any software, so the OS Windows XP SP1 was already installed on it. When I got on the Internet I went to Microsoft download.com and proceeded to do some of there many free updates. Then I wanted to upgrade to XP SP2or3 and it asked me to validate my OS. So I did and it came back with the message "This copy did not pass genuine validation" I've had one sugestion that was to go to Linux or Ubanta.

I'm using a computer that was built by a friend (really, I promise) who installed non-genuine XP in it. I've never been a fan of pirated software, but the computer was free, so what's a boy to do?
OK, so I've put up with all the "non-genuine" reminders from Redmond figuring it was my penance, but now I'm thinking I should move on up to Vista (mainly for Media Center). And yes, the hardware is up to it.
Meanwhile, I had installed a genuine copy of XP on my previous computer before receiving this one (I still have the disks). One install, one machine. So, can I just install that genuine XP over the non-genuine one?

A few days ago when he switched on his pc he got a message that said that his windows was not genuine and that he was the victim of Software piracy. There is a link on the page to a site that says it is a microsoft site and that he must buy a licence from microsoft to make his software geniune.
The software he uses is a geniune microsoft XP disk. It is however old because none of the service packs is installed and it must be installed seperately.

Like alot of people that build their own systems or constantly upgrade and switch out parts, I use a cracked copy of Windows XP on some of my builds. These are my own builds and if someone wants a new PC, the price of a genuine Windows OS is included in the price and they are given the disk. It is because of Microsofts asinine activation feature and the fact that I have 4 desktops and 2 laptops that I use the cracked copy. Anyways, my girlfriends dad's (a cop )laptop recently had a hard drive failure, and because he bought it with Windows preinstalled(no disk) he needed an OS. He didn't know any better and when I went over there last night to check on his laptop, up pops the MS genuine notification that has recently gone around.

I replaced a cd writer for a friend and all went well. Of course I had to power down the machine & in so doing so there were 5 MS updates for SP2 that ran. The updates installed sucessfuly & then I was prompted to install MS Windows Genuine Advantage; no problem. However following the install of Windows Genuine Advantage a notification flag appeared stating that he does not have a legit copy of windows.
The system is an HP 520W purchased new a few years ago and came with XP installed. The system is up to date running XP SP2 with all updates. Windows Genuine Advantage version 1,5,708,0 was the last update installed.

I have a brand new Dell desktop, entering the world of XP for the first time. I was never prompted for any kind of validatio for the OS, though I did fill out a survey-like thing that seemed to confirm that my Windows software is legit. However, I have read here at the forums about people who don't properly "activate" their XP within 30 days, only to have Windows not work for them afterwards.

Odd windows genuine validation message The scan of your computer has completed. The Windows product key associated with your copy of Windows maps to one of the major PC manufacturers who purchase Windows product keys from Microsoft. The specific product key found on your computer maps to a major PC manufacturer that sells different hardware than the hardware found on your machine. This will not prevent you from validating now, but may cause you problems in the future. Please click Continue to complete the validation process.] I have change the hardware on the machine for your info. Should I change my key on the back of the machine?

My Windows XP Pro (after 3 months use by me) has come up with a notice that my software validation is invalid. The Notice states "This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation. The product key found on this computer is not valid for use in your region. How can I find out if any software I buy is valid for my region prior to purchase? Surely if Microsoft software is purchased anywhere in the world it should be valid no matter where you are.
