View 3 Replies View RelatedI purchased this computer from a guy who recently passed away. I also recently found out that he installed a pirated version of Windows XP Pro on this machine. I do not have the installation CD. My question is: Can I go to a retail store, purchase a valid Windows XP Home or Pro edition, insert the new valid CD, and it will overwrite the pirated version? Or is something more involved necessary? Also, if I can do that, will all my files be lost?

Why do people spend $200-$600 on a single piece of hardware (such as a graphics card, processor, or monitor), spend upward of 1 to 4 thousand for the entire hardware collection, and then pirate a copy of Windows XP Home that only costs like $100 for an OEM version if you don't even feel like shopping around for a good deal on it?I don't get it!What good is all of that hardware without any software to run it?And why to people whine about how bad Windows is, but then pirate it instead of running Linux? I mean if M$ software is so awful, then why use their software?

I've been running a copy of XP for over a year that I purchased from newegg.com and it is just now telling me that my copy is not valid. I've been having some recent problems with my computer: one day I turned on my computer and tried to log in and it told me that my profile had become corrupt and that it was going to log me onto a temporary profile(ran very slow)... something along those lines. Decided to reinstall XP which fixed nothing, and then searched around online and decided to just make a new profile and copy my files over to this profile from the corrupt one. Computer ran very well for a while, until.
my computer to receive this error message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>/system32/ntoskrnl.exe. Please reinstall a copy of the above file. I reinstalled this file by accessing the recovery console.

I've been troubled by viruses and trojans on an older computer (Pentium4) and decided to reinstall XP from the disc to see if I can "start over". I have another primary computer, so it doesn't hurt me to lose all the files etc. I'd rather start with a clean slate. Anyway, the XP install from the disc with SP1 went fine. Then I installed SP2 per the request of the windows update monitor. The install proceeded fine until a copy error occurred.Copy Erro Error occurred while copying file sprb0414.dll.Cannot copy file to directory.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had to install new hard drive. The only way out now, is to install a brand new copy of XP Home or Professional.I do not need the box/manual etc so I thought I could buy a cheaper copy OEM. But when I went to Amazon it said the OEM was not for a consumer, only system builders. Can anyone explain what problems I might encounter if I installed a OEM version (as funds are very tight - OEM would help out a lot).Or does anyone know of a version of XP that you can buy without the box etc (just the CD), that is for a home user. One other question - will my motherboard except a new version of XP(does it know that I am changing the "Product Key" etc).

I just want 1 copy of windows XP running on my computer.
I turned on my computer today and everything's messed up. I'm running windows XP on a Sony Vaio (about 6 yrs. old). I have 2 separate CD drives, and my computer won't recognize them. Sometimes when I restarted it'd recognize one of them. When I'm in the BIOS screen it only shows 1 CD drive. I can't copy or backup files; I wanted to backup so I could revert back to factory settings. I also can't install or uninstall anything. My anti-virus program (McAfee) says it has updated, but when I run a scan it says my definitions are 5 months out of date. It suddenly takes a really long time to boot up.

Yesterday while looking at EBAY, the screen went black, and the computer locked up.Thru trials, I ended up reformating the HD and starting from scratch. XP starts the installation and at 37 minutes left to install, everything freezes. I have to restart and XP installation begins again at about 47 minutes left to install, then at 37 minutes left to finish, the system locks again, and again, again, and again, at 37 minutes to finish.

View 11 Replies View RelatedMy computer didn't come with an XP CD, just the manufacturer's restore CD which will wipe out all I've done in the last four years. So, if I backup (copy) all the files on my C drive, except the Windows folder (assuming that's where all the OS files are), to an external drive, then run the restore CD which will revert the computer back to the way it was when I bought it. Then download and install SP2 and copy the original files back to C.

My PC is operating noticeably slower than before the crash, I scanned my RAM with MemTest. There is also a couple adware programs that comes up in processes, only bitdefender blocks it from popping up when using the internet. Also my Primary IDE channel is using PIO Mode instead of DMA, ive heard this can be because of viruses, should I reinstall windows?Could this mean the windows has been modified and what should i do?
