A local store with great system prices installed a pirated copy of XP on my
machine. Now, I can't get service packs, etc.How do I correct this situation? If I purchase a genuine copy, must I do acomplete reinstall, install over the existing copy, do a repair, or WHAT??
Windows xp pro and discovered that it is a pirated copy. I want to get rid of it and install my valid copy of 98se. do i format my hard drive i do have files i want to keep.

I do not have the installation CD. My question is: Can I go to a retail store, purchase a valid Windows XP Home or Pro edition, insert the new valid CD, and it will overwrite the pirated version? Or is something more involved necessary? Also, if I can do that, will all my files be lost?

I mean if M$ software is so awful, then why use their software?

Everytime they release a new version of windows they talk like now finally all problems are over while in some cases of the platform the problems even got worse. I'm really curious if private pc users for example still have to give away their half month salary when Windows Vista arrives in being able to buy it. No wonder there is so much illigal activity going on. Many people cant afford it due to the Euro economy in Europe. I think that when microsoft drops it's insane high prices they will sell a lot more copies and in the end make more profit out of it.

Windows update now tells me that I may not have a ligitmate copy of Windows installed. I was told that the only way to get updates now was to buy a legitimate copy and that what I did today. View 5 Replies View Relatedi started installing Windows XP. I first did a reformat from WXP cd of my HDD after which XP copied some files to it. It then said it was gonna restard after 15 seconds that went by and restart after.It asked to press a key to restard from the CD but I didn't and the install should have kept on going on from there But the screen just stayed black with no activity going on at all. No beep, no restart,no CD spinning, but all fan running. I restart a few time,even restard the install always with the same result. Everything goed fine until the first restart happen.

One that I'm looking at says that it has a (legal and genuine version) of Windows XP Pro SP3 o/s installed on the custom built computer, but there's no disk. If I were to purchase a computer like this, and make a back up copy of that installed o/s on my own disk, will there be any difference than if I had received the original installation disk or manufacturer's restore disk?.....or would the installed (and backup) o/s be considered an "unlicensed" copy?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI've installed the new drive, formatted it two partitions, and installed my XP on the new drive. The old drive is still installed, and I can select which drive I am booting off of. Boot off the old drive, I'm on my old PC. Boot off the new one, I'm on the new.Only one of the XPs are active at a time. The other says it must be activated.
So, at this point, I boot to the old, and (with this OS activated)run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. I specify that I am saving the data on one of the drives in the PC. It runs and says it's successful. Then I boot off the new drive and (now with THIS OS activated) when I point the FAST to the directory where I saved the files, the wizard says there's no files there to load. I can see .dat files in the directory, but the wizard can't.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having odd problems with XP on my laptop. I installed XP on a new Hard Drive a few weeks ago. I then added SP 1 and SP 2. I downloaded all the hot fixes. I installed from the Dell site as much as I could. ( The original OS was windows ME) Now the System Restore does not work. It goes through the gyrations then comes back and says "system not restored". When I click on the Help or restore settings nothing happens. I cleared the restore points last week and set a new restore point. When I tried it it worked fine. I went back to check this week and it didn't work again. Other problems with mouse installation, USB settings, and odd start up and shut down problems makes me think that there is corruption in windows. I put the Windows XP CD in to see if I could fix some of these problems. I thought maybe reinstalling basic Windows without reformatting would fix the problem. A warning came up and said the copy of windows in my machine is newer than the one on the disk and if I continued I would lose all settings. I assume it means SP1 and SP2. Can I fix this without starting all over again? Also would it be possible to partition my HD and put a new copy of XP on the partition; then transfer from the old copy?
