Jun 19, 2005I currently have a copy of XP pro on my laptop and want to upgrade my girlfriends computer to XP from Windows 2000. Can I install my copy of XP onto her laptop?

Not Have A Legitimation Copy Of Installed
Sep 18, 2006I recently (about a month ago)had a computer repair shop upgrade my computer and they installed Win XP Home. Windows update now tells me that I may not have a ligitmate copy of Windows installed. I was told that the only way to get updates now was to buy a legitimate copy and that what I did today. Is there anyway of putting in the new product I.D. number into my computer and activating and registering it with Microsoft without have to do a complete reinstall? I am so mad at the repair shop. My machine is a P IV, 1.6 gigs, 512 ram

Installed New Copy / Restarted PC And Gets Black Screen?
Feb 10, 2008i started installing Windows XP. I first did a reformat from WXP cd of my HDD after which XP copied some files to it. It then said it was gonna restard after 15 seconds that went by and restart after.It asked to press a key to restard from the CD but I didn't and the install should have kept on going on from there But the screen just stayed black with no activity going on at all. No beep, no restart,no CD spinning, but all fan running. I restart a few time,even restard the install always with the same result. Everything goed fine until the first restart happen.

Battlefield 2 is where I notice the significant performance loss and where I benchmark my machine.Think I am missing a driver? Can I find out what driver I am missing? Aug 11, 2008I just re-installed my OS on my laptop. Its a dell inspiron 9300. Its running windows xp, has 34 gig hard drive and half a gig of ram. Its almost 4 years old. Its really slow and sluggish even though I just re-installed. I have a backup hard drive too so I don't have to use all my space. Is it time for a new one? I've lost the system recovery disk buta friend gave me theirs. when I inserted it I was asked for a serial number and duly put in the one on the bottom of the laptop but it was rejected.Nothing would work so I exited the menu and went out and purchased a brand new copy of the O/S. However when I put the disc in it keeps taking me back to the old screen which asks me for a serial number and it wont accept the one form the disk I purchased.

Jan 16, 2008I have been getting the blue screen of death on my Dell Inspiron 600m running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP2 w/ Intel Pentium M processor 1600 MHz 299 MHz, 1 GB of Ram (only hardware not factory - installed recently). I was given this laptop as a Christmas gift as the donor received a new one on boxing day It was given to me with this error and I suspect it is from the new(er) memory installed but cannot be certain as I have no references to go on. I had enough of this reoccurring error very quickly so I reinstalled the OS clean and fully updated the system with Microsoft updates including SP2, the computer also has quite a bit of expensive software I installed and is virus free according to trend micro IS PC-cillin 2007.The memory that came out of this unit is in with the laptop bag stored in the new memory packaging, the new memory is: Times Two(2) units = KTD - INSP8200/512 (512MB Memory Module) Equiv. Dell(R) P/N: 311 - 1356 (Sodimm DDR Inspiron) whatever that means! I tried again with the same result so I tried installing Linux (Ubuntu). This went on fine and so I tried XP again. Still the blue screen of death. If I were to purchase a computer like this, and make a back up copy of that installed o/s on my own disk, will there be any difference than if I had received the original installation disk or manufacturer's restore disk?.....or would the installed (and backup) o/s be considered an "unlicensed" copy?

Sep 27, 2010I've installed the new drive, formatted it two partitions, and installed my XP on the new drive. The old drive is still installed, and I can select which drive I am booting off of. Boot off the old drive, I'm on my old PC. Boot off the new one, I'm on the new.Only one of the XPs are active at a time. The other says it must be activated.
So, at this point, I boot to the old, and (with this OS activated)run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. I specify that I am saving the data on one of the drives in the PC. It runs and says it's successful. Then I boot off the new drive and (now with THIS OS activated) when I point the FAST to the directory where I saved the files, the wizard says there's no files there to load. I can see .dat files in the directory, but the wizard can't.

Mar 1, 2005I am having odd problems with XP on my laptop. I installed XP on a new Hard Drive a few weeks ago. I then added SP 1 and SP 2. I downloaded all the hot fixes. I installed from the Dell site as much as I could. ( The original OS was windows ME) Now the System Restore does not work. It goes through the gyrations then comes back and says "system not restored". When I click on the Help or restore settings nothing happens. I cleared the restore points last week and set a new restore point. When I tried it it worked fine. I went back to check this week and it didn't work again. Other problems with mouse installation, USB settings, and odd start up and shut down problems makes me think that there is corruption in windows. I put the Windows XP CD in to see if I could fix some of these problems. I thought maybe reinstalling basic Windows without reformatting would fix the problem. A warning came up and said the copy of windows in my machine is newer than the one on the disk and if I continued I would lose all settings. I assume it means SP1 and SP2. Can I fix this without starting all over again? Also would it be possible to partition my HD and put a new copy of XP on the partition; then transfer from the old copy?
