its a brand new computer and only a month old. Windows XP Professional keeps on restarting itself for no reason. I tried to get into safe mode but it also restarts the computer before the OS can be loaded. It's the main business computer that keeps all my employee numbers and payroll accounts. Is there a way to reformat the computer without losing my precious data?

Mine just had major issues and I want to retrieve the data on the system before I try either a fresh install on that HDD, or perhaps get a new HDD and swap that instead of my current one.I don't know if it's my HDD that failed, but after a major episode, and doing a repair, it keeps locking up on the checks and when bypassing that, it still locks up when I do get to log in. I tried to system restore, but apparently I don't have a restore point to do this, it just points to today. So, I've read that I can put the HDD from pc #1 (which is having the issues) into pc #2, which is working just fine) and transfer pics, docs, fav places, etc, that I want to save.I have no idea how this works. I've read about slaving and jumpers and such and this is all greek to me. I'm a reasonable beginner insofar as I know enough to really get myself in trouble, so I could REALLY use a detailed step by step description of what I should do. I'd also like to do some kind of diagnostic on the HDD from the pc that is exhibiting the problem to see if I do indeed need to get a new one.

when i get to the partition part of the installation, it shows that i have 2 drives.
C: my main drive that has 70GB
D: Recovery drive that has 10 GB...
so, how should i approach this.

I have been trying to clen up an old computer to give away. It is a 2002-vintage desktop with 512MB ram. I tried several times to reformat and reinstall xp, but I have only succeeded in removing the operating system and reformating both the hard drives. I have the OEM xp disk that came with it but I have tried 15 times to install xp and I can't. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy hard drive recently crashed and I reinstalled windows xp, the copy i brought with the product key turns out to me fake or blacklisted by Microsoft, the problem is i scanned the disc used for installation and it contain more than a few adware programs and viruses. My PC is operating noticeably slower than before the crash, I scanned my RAM with MemTest. There is also a couple adware programs that comes up in processes, only bitdefender blocks it from popping up when using the internet. Also my Primary IDE channel is using PIO Mode instead of DMA, ive heard this can be because of viruses, should I reinstall windows?Could this mean the windows has been modified and what should i do?

My C drive has about 15 gigabytes, the D drive has about 100 gigabytes, and the hidden recovery partition has about 5 gigabytes. Can I resize the C drive to make it bigger without losing data? Ever since then, my laptop PC was unable to recognize the unit, but the Mac (which is not working right now, unfortunately) never had a problem with it. When I connect it to my laptop PC via USB, the USB icon shows up and the "USB Mass Storage Device Properties" says the "device is working properly." But the folder doesn't show up in My Computer, and diskmgmt.msc says the device is "Unallocated." Hopefully that doesn't mean the unit crashed because I have some stuff on there.Without losing the data (that should be on it, unless it crashed), I want to convert this thing to NTFS. I did some Google searching, but the instructions on how to do this (they say use convert.exe) aren't working. Moreover, no one mentioned how to convert an External, secondary HD.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI had a bad HDD failure which corrupted part of my WinXP OS with the result that I am unable to boot into Windows. I have reloaded Windows on another HDD and I will be able to recover most of my data from backups. However, there is still some recent data on the bad disk which I am frantic to recover. I am able to find the "Documents and Settings" folder where I believe the "Outlook Express" data is held
I am unable to get into the folder as my username on the computer was passworded (the password is known). Neither am I allowed to copy the folder to my new drive. I cannot access the folder from my new OS even when I password myself with the same username / password. I have attempted to repair the bad drive's copy of Windows but that wasn't successful. I don't want to replace the bad copy with a fresh as this would reformat the drive taking with it the folder I want (and can't copy). Any work on the folder would need to be on the bad drive, it seems. I have run out of ideas.
So I just rebuilt my PC, installed XP Home edition and installed the SP2 upgrade. I also installed some basic programs such as Norton Anti-Virus, Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender. Since this is a fresh copy, you would think no problems right? Well, for some reason, this operating system just freezes everytime I'm trying to either install updates and other programs. It even freezes sometimes after its booted into the OS! There's no spyware or viruses, so I'm thinking it has to do with the SP2 install. I'm also dual booting with Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, which is running fine with no problems. I'm thinking about uninstalling SP2 if this solves the problem.

Pressed F6 and installed sata drivers for the mobo etc. Now i hasten to add that i have tried this 3 times now, set up runs smoothly windows installs however when i have finished windows will only boot up with the CD in the CDROM. Been into Bios and changed boot sequence but still if no CD it just gets to boot from cd in the boot up screen and> stops, put the disk in and windows boots straight up and away we go.

I lost my sound and when I look at my device manager i see a little yellow flag by my multi media controller. If I try to Upgrade the driver I get the blue screen of death. I tried to reistall my origanial operating system, from my 8 recovery disks it won't let me. I trie booting from it and it won't let me. It sez I'm missing (windowsroot) system32hal.dll.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my laptop from XP Home to XP Pro. But, I absent-mindedly started to install by booting from the CD like I was doing a fresh install/reformat rather than doing it from inside the OS to do an upgrade. I caught myself, however and restarted without the CD and upgraded Windows from inside Windows. It worked, but now when I boot my computer, it gives me two options to choose from: "Windows XP Home Edition" or "Windows XP Professional Setup." When I pick the Home option, the computer boots up fine and goes to Windows.
However, when I go to Start>Control Panel>System, it shows that I have XP Pro even though I chose the XP Home option at boot. If I choose the XP Pro Setup option, it asks for the SP2 CD, even though the OS is bundled with SP2 on the same CD. I hit Enter, and it keeps asking for the SP2 CD even though the CD is in there. I tried to go to the Disk Management screen and delete the XP Pro Setup partition (which was only 1Gb), but that didn't work. So, I figured that boot.ini was still confused as to what to boot to.
computer started to run very poorly: lagging, freezing up, windows end task etc finnaly one day it would not go into desktop. would only give option to start in normal mode or safe mode. so i tried starting in both but would only restart into the same option screen.I decided it was best to format harddrive and reload windows. insert windows disk and proceeded to format partition and reinstall windows. it formats all that way to 90 % and then states cannot format partition further, harddrive problems and to trouble shoot manual. tried quick format and repair but still nothing.tried restarting without reinstall disk. says cant access OS of course!

On some web sites I cannot even make out what the words are. I found out that when I go into my monitor settings in display properties I am unable to install the drivers for my monitor. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed a fresh copy of windows XP sp2 on 2 machines. Both Dell Optiplex desktops. Usually it prompts that it has found new hardware for each device it hasn't found drivers for. Device manager lists them with a yellow exclamation icon.Problem I have now though is that the fresh install of XP does not show these prompt at all, although device manager lists them and if i go in there and update driver the device works.The problem I have is that basically i usually copy a driver heirarchy to the systemdrive and point the registry at them, which results in automatic installation on boot. This no longer works and I assume they are related as it doesn't look like it's automatically trying to install these devices.Is there a setting somewhere, seems very strange, what with it being a fresh install?

For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?

My school HD took a powder (the evil clicky noise of doom), but I was able to back up my files prior to that. Me being a quick thinker, I decide to upgrade my gamer puter to a 120gb (don't wanna go too nutso, as I am considering building a much superior computer), and put the good 60 gb in my old Athlon 700. Problem? I cannot get Windows XP Home to complete install on my gamer computer. (Athlon 700 installed just fine with 'good' 60gb).Gamer Computer: Athlon 1800+, 512MB DDR Ram 2100, KR7A Raid MOBO, GeForce3 Ti 200 (128MB DDR RAM), SB Audigy 2(AGP).
It is a RAID mobo, but i do not use the raid functionality, I did not have a problem before(I have my HD and my 2 roms on ide now). I go through the install steps, and I get to the very very end, where it states you are about to start Windows XP, and then it hangs, and thats it.I have tried to ensure there are no conflicts, I pulled out my sound card as well as my network card, and 're-seated' my video card and RAM. I have tried looking at using a winxp bootup floppy, booted into safe mode (the only error it detects is the missing RAID, no conflicts detected there). Heck, I even swapped out mouse and keyboard. I tried putting back the good 60gb back in the pc, and reformatting, but still get the same thing(sometimes the screen is black, sometimes the icky blue of xp, but that's it).I have no idea now. I did make sure that my bios was up to date before taking down the system originally, and it was, so no change was made there. Even swapped out the ribbon cables to ensure nothing was damaged on original removal.
