XP Not Genuine But Wait...
Apr 13, 2010
I have XP pro on my computer that is not genuine. I have a legit copy of XP 64 bit.
Is there a way I can install my copy over top the existing one to solve my problem? Will it prompt me for a new key and I'll be good to go?

I'm using a computer that was built by a friend (really, I promise) who installed non-genuine XP in it. I've never been a fan of pirated software, but the computer was free, so what's a boy to do?
OK, so I've put up with all the "non-genuine" reminders from Redmond figuring it was my penance, but now I'm thinking I should move on up to Vista (mainly for Media Center). And yes, the hardware is up to it.
Meanwhile, I had installed a genuine copy of XP on my previous computer before receiving this one (I still have the disks). One install, one machine. So, can I just install that genuine XP over the non-genuine one?

Should invest in Windows XP 64 or not. Would it improve my performance (I have an amd64 3200+) and if I would have to back up everything i want to keep on there. And would I be better off if I just waited for vista?

For the past couple of months I have been getting an annoying Microsoft Pop-up that says Please Wait. It stays on the screen anywhere from a couple to as many as ten seconds. Then it disappears. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems but it's just a pain. I?m running Windows XP SP2. I'm going to try to attach a screen shot of it.

I am running under W2k-SP4. Whenever I try to install a program, "Please wait while Windows configures Scansoft PDF Professional 3.0" pops up. It also pops up when I run some Utility programs installed months ago (such as Registry Mechanic).
I got rid of all Scansoft softwares weeks ago (Uninstall + deletion of registry entries using Resplendent Registrar).
I replaced msiexec with Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803-v2-x86). Nothing doing.

When i turn on my computer I get the windows splash screen, then a blue screen that says Please Wait, followed by dots. The Windows logo is in the top right corner. Windows stays at this screen for a few minutes, then it goes to the log in screen. I believe that during the Please wait screen Windows is running chkdsk. Does anyone know how to turn this off? I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

I have 1 memory slot left in my motherbaord and it supports a maximum of 1GB in that slot - I have used the previous 2 with 1GB in each channel running as dual channel memory.
Can Windows XP MCE 2005 work with more than 2GB of memory? I heard that XP with more than 2GB of memory is like Me with more than 512MB. Under Me when I used more than 512MB RAM (768MB) it worked but after performing intensive tasks I has incredibly slow performance to the point where the system almost grinded to a halt!! I wouldnt even dare make full use of the 1GB as I saw articles on MS website saying that 1GB will cause 9x OS's to completely not start at all!! Oh and lets not forget the glorious BSOD - those bring back some memories!
Once I upgraded to XP the 768MB of RAM worked fine. Then went onto 1GB and then afterwards a nice comfy 2GB.
Simply put, if I have 3GB of RAM, will I experience slowdowns or lockups in XP MCE 2005 much like I did in Me, when I had 768MB of RAM? Is 2GB of RAM the "ceiling" in XP MCE 2005 for good reliable performance.

My hard drive with my OS on it ended up going bad. When it went bad, I had a slave drive with some data on it set up that happened to get corrupted along the way. So I removed the bad drive, put a new drive in and installed a fresh copy of xp w sp2. Did all my updates, everything ran perfect. Now I left my slave drive alone with my date on it. Some of my data got corrupted and if you went looking around in there, a message would come up drive not formatted if I opened certain folder on that drive. Some of the data was still good. Well anyways I noticed on my brand new fresh install, if I went to add/remove programs it would sit there and hang. It would say please wait while list is being populated. If I let it sit long enough it would eventually come up but something was definitely wrong. So while I am sitting here waiting for the list to load, I noticed my hard drive activity light was lit on my tower and seemed like the hard drive was very busy. So after googling some more and not finding any help I figured I would try and fix it myself.
I ended up getting what I could off my slave drive and downloaded maxblast and cleared everything out and re-set the drive and deleted and created a new partition. Well guess what, my add remove programs now works perfect after clearing out my slave drive. I'm guessing what was happening was for whatever reason the add remove programs was trying to scan Drive D: for whatever reason and it had corrupt data on it which is why it took so long. I'm not saying this is going to solve all hang ups, but I tried every tip I could find and no dice. This actually worked. So if you are having trouble take a good look at your hard drives and make sure they are in good working order.

I installed SP2 for XP then I got the critical updates for SP2 installed. Now when I go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel no list is displayed, just the window saying to wait for list population. I've waited up to 15 min but there's no icon or any indication that anything is trying to happen. Other categories in CP work fine. So I'm not sure if the culprit would be the applet itself, the service pack or one of the priority updates, if any. I considered doing a system restore, I'll do it if so advised. I've run a spyware scanner and CleanUp!

Every time open Internet Explorer, Word or Excel, a box pops up that says: Windows Installer: Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage. With Explorer I end up hitting cancel about 10 times and it takes about 30 seconds and it asks me for a CD I don't have, I hit cancel some more, and then Explorer finally loads. With Word and Excel, I just hit cancel once, and then Word and Excel never do load.

The software he uses is a geniune microsoft XP disk. It is however old because none of the service packs is installed and it must be installed seperately.

I've built a new PC with following components:
ASUS P5W2D-E Premium mobo
P4 930 (dual core)
2gb 667 DDR2
2x250gb S-ATA drives
I've configure the HDDs as a raid 1 array and booted from my XPSP2 cd. I press F6 to load the raid drivers from floppy and the install then continues loading the rest of the drivers from the windows CD.
I then get the "Press enter to continue" message. I press enter and then get a blank blue screen with a "Please wait" message. I've waited for 30 minutes and nothing happens.
If I remove the raid array and try installing with just one drive it gets a little further. I get the next screen where I have to "Press F8 to agree to the license agreement and continure".
I then get another blank blue screen with a message at the bottom "Loading Setupp.ini". Nothing happens no matter how long I wait.
Any ideas? I've disconnected all unessecary components such as USB connectors etc in case they were intrefering. I've checked my bios version and its the latest (0501 although there is a 0601 beta release available).

Like alot of people that build their own systems or constantly upgrade and switch out parts, I use a cracked copy of Windows XP on some of my builds. These are my own builds and if someone wants a new PC, the price of a genuine Windows OS is included in the price and they are given the disk. It is because of Microsofts asinine activation feature and the fact that I have 4 desktops and 2 laptops that I use the cracked copy. Anyways, my girlfriends dad's (a cop )laptop recently had a hard drive failure, and because he bought it with Windows preinstalled(no disk) he needed an OS. He didn't know any better and when I went over there last night to check on his laptop, up pops the MS genuine notification that has recently gone around.

However following the install of Windows Genuine Advantage a notification flag appeared stating that he does not have a legit copy of windows.
The system is an HP 520W purchased new a few years ago and came with XP installed. The system is up to date running XP SP2 with all updates. Windows Genuine Advantage version 1,5,708,0 was the last update installed.

I was never prompted for any kind of validatio for the OS, though I did fill out a survey-like thing that seemed to confirm that my Windows software is legit. However, I have read here at the forums about people who don't properly "activate" their XP within 30 days, only to have Windows not work for them afterwards.
