I used to know a start>run command that would open up a program that every person using windows XP has. It allows you to control another persons mouse and view their screen if they have the same program up.I can't remember what the command was
I got a friend who is having problems with his XP. His start menu shows all the icons for programs but under some things like My Computer, and some others, there is no text or title text. On Facebook, you can see a person's picture on the feed, but no name. In Firefox, with new tabs, it doesn't show what the tab titles are. Control panel too also shows all icons and no title.
When I sign in to my server, I need to access the task manager while using remote desktop. I cannot or do not know how to invoke control alt delete from a remote desktop session., so I can see the processes running. Is there another way to see this other then with control alt del?
In a not updated Version of Windows XP you can run (Start-run) "start"command at the Run dialog just typing it, when you update windows andwrite the same "start" into Run dialog Windows shows a error message >Windows cannot find `start`. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for the file, click the Start button, andthen click Search. If you are in CMD the `start` command works fine but the problem is thein Run dialog windows doesn’t recognize it ?

I have a program that uses the startcommand, and when I thy to use my program in updated windows it dosntwork! I need to find a way to use the start command directly.
When I get to the welcome screen and put in my password, windows starts to load my settings, then once it reaches the desktop, it logs off. It acts as if there's a log off command pinned to start up. I did have a spyware/adware problem right before this started. I scanned and had the spyware program (Spyware Doctor) clean the disk. Things after were running fine and had even rebooted both hard and soft a couple of times without any problem. I turned off the computer before leaving home for a few hours, came back, turned on the computer and the behavior described above started. I called a tech in town and he suggested to try booting in under the last known configuration used and if that didn't work, to try booting in safe mode. If that didn't work, then he'll need to see the computer. Unfortunately, neither worked and they aren't open again until Monday. I'm using a friend's laptop to find tech support between now and Monday morning, hoping to save a trip.
The computer I have doesn't have a familiar brand name like Compaq or Dell and I cannot remember the name. However, it is a typical IMB compatible like Compaq with Windows XP Home Edition, has a Pentium 4 processor and 1.something gigs of memory.
I am using Windows xp. In 'Start' menu, the 'Run' and 'Search' options are not being shown. When I try keys 'Windows + R' it shows a message reading " This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your System Operator."
I have a problem with run command in start menu. I have struck some worm last week. Due to this the name of recycle bin is changed to W.Bush and run command button from my start menu is missing. I am able remove the worm. these to things remained. Please give me solution to restore my run command button in start menu so can use it. At the same time suggest me to change the recycle bin name from W.Bush to recycle bin
I was trying to fix my brother's computer because I kept getting a website redirect and I know something's wrong with his computer. I ran Malwarebyte's, Ccleaner, and AVG and they didn't catch anything. I came here after googling and seeing some advice to another person with the redirect issue, and did the run: msconfig: checked the safemode box in the BOOT tab. So I restarted his computer (it's running XP) and kept trying to restart in safe mode but it kept taking me back to the screen that gives the option to start in safe mode or normal. No matter which mode I chose, it kept coming BACK to that screen so I finally just manually shut it down.
Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT). 1)Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer RunMRU. 2)Delete all of the values that you dont want in this key (everything in the right pane, except for (Default)). 3)Close the Registry Editor when finished. You'll probably have to refresh the Desktop or restart Windows for this change to take effect.
So i was trying to make some room on y C drive and i guess i deleted some files that i shouldn't To make a long story short now my volume control thingy that stays on my taskbar has dissapeared. When i go to the control panel and to sounds and audio devices and i get in there and there is an icon with the option to place volume icon on the taskbar but when i click on that i get 'windows cannot display the volume control on the task bar because the volume control program has not been installed. After several tries i figured i deleted the windows file soundvol32.exe but how the hell do i get it back and put it in its right place?I have no idea where it would go? Anybody have an idea how i can install that back? I tried using my windows cd but since i put service pack 2 on it it said that the version of windows i had on the cd was older than my current version.
we were using the computer last night all was normal (running very smoothe & fast) get up this morning and turn on the computer log into windows. come upto the desktop click in IE and nothing happens. so i look in the system tray and nothing but the clock is there. weird i think to myself. so i click on start and it doesnt come up, its liek the computers response tme is cut by 99.9%. finally after about 15 minutes start window pops up. i click on control panel (to get to admn tool >event viewer) and after i click on control panel the start window disappears adn nothing ever happens. i religiously run spyblaster , adaware , spybot search&destroy, registry mechanic , and check windows update everyday. i run panda for AV program and it is set to auto update.
I've gone through and removed hundreds of viruses and cleaned it up pretty well. However, I can't access the CONTROL PANEL because it is missing from the START menu. I checked the start button properties, and it isn't listed in the customize/advanced menu. It's just not there. I'm fairly certain that I've gotten all the virus and spyware activity off the computer. I've now scanned it with 3 separate programs. I've tried booting into Safe Mode and Also logging on as Administrator (in safe mode), but it won't re-appear. I've even done the cmd: mmc / add/remove snap-in / add "groups" (as directed by another website) but "groups" isn't even listed. Come to think of it, it's not listed in this computer either (xp home).
I went to install a program last night thati have recieved of a friend(well i thought we were) and now i have lost use of a lot of functions and keep getting security messages pop up on my screen.
I have Window XP operating system and can no longer access the control panel. The icon is no longer available on my Start Menu. There is an icon called Set Program Access and Defaults and when I click on it it tells me "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". This is a private home computer, not on a system. Though I am a regular computer user I have few technical skills and may have entered an incorrect command.
I have been recently having problems with my computer, revolving around the above program. Whenever I click on control panel from Start it hangs around for about 30-60 secs before saying 'Dr Watson Postmortum Debugger has encountered a serious error and needs to close'. Afterwards, the whole computer is totally frozen, and I have to perform a force shutdown. I currently use a Windows Xp 512mb ram Pentium 4.
I've seen similar recent threads opened detailing similar problems you've looked into. My control panel icon has vanished from my start menu, the link to it in My Computer has gone too and when I try to access it via the Run function using control.exe I am greeted with the message of "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer, please contact your administrator".I'm sure this is a malware problem I've picked up off the web but I've got no idea of how to fix the problem. Your help would be very gratefully received.
I would like to know if this can be done in win xp environment. say I have a folder, A, of pictures only and they all have file extensions jpg eg abc.jpg, xyz.jpg. say I have a second folder, B, which contains all the files of A(if you ignore extensions) and more(but all are pictures.) But all the files in B has extensions NEF instead of jpg eg abc.NEF, efg.NEF, xyz.NEF. My idea is to extract all the files from B that has the same the name as A(ignoring extensions) and either move or copy to a separate folder ie if A contains abc.jpg, xyz.jpg then abc.NEF and xyz.NEF will be extracted and moved/copied to a new folder. I'm not sure where to start. is there a program out there that can do this? or there's a special command to type at the command prompt?
Daughter has Windows XP and her friend has a user ID on the computer. She said she was trying to fix the Administrator account so that when she saved files they wouldn't be on all user names. So I'm not exactly sure what she did, and she's 15 so of course she can't remember, but the thing won't exactly run. I can get into that safety boot mode but don't know what to do after that tried starting in safe mode and all that, but it just gets stuck. One user ID (the original administrator one) will appear as if Windows is going to start but it never does.I bought it at a pawn shop, so of course there are no restoration disks. I'm thinking it can't be anything too difficult, I just don't know the command to run.
How do you key a "windows"-R shortcut to start a run command? On Swiss French keyboard layout, the usual key immediately on the right of the shift is missing; how do you type a backslash is this keyboard config?
Previously I have been doing work that requires me to unplug my network connection and I need to check my IP address each time I plug it in again. I guess it's not set for static IP.Anyways to do this I usually go into Command Prompt and type 'ipconfig'Now however I just get "'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".The directory is the same as its always been, I can change it but it doesn't seem to matter what it is.I've checked many other posts and is there something possibly wrong with my PATH variable? I used the command 'echo %PATH%' and it works, the list it gives is very garbled however.
I can't access the "Run" command from the start menu. When I click on it windows bring up a message box saying "Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" Even if I click yes, the shortcut doesn't do anything. I can still access the run command by hitting the windows button + r. But it is annoying not having that function when needed... No virii or spyware involved. I believe it's a registry issue, but I've no idea were to correct the issue and I can't find any info on the net[which is a first].
I'm using a small apache server on a local network for a wiki, and I integrate php functions mixed with windows system calls as well. I'd like to be able to output to a .txt file a search result of *.something on all the available network machines.
I can do the search with the exploer 'Find' function, although its speed is ridiculously slow. However, I can't seem to be able to find an equivalent function in DOS. (DIR is only applicable on one's own machine
I have been using Add/Remove icon in Control Panel to remove programs. Although the Win2k Pro is running fine ,the icon of Add/Remove Program is not opening the next window to remove the programs.
When I double click my computer, recycle bin, control panel, etc, the hourglass comes up for a few seconds, goes off, and nothing else. No error messages or anything, just nothing. I have viewed a few of the threads covering this and a common link was the hijack this result. II have run SpyBotSD and adaware, I have run mutiple virus scans, I did an SFC, and the final thing was to repair windows using the original disk, nothing useful.
I am running Windows XP on a Gateway GM5084 Media Center, and for over eight months, I've been having to deal with what I believe are hackers. I have reinstalled my system, both destructive and Partial, a number of times and still haven't got rid of them. Yesterday (11/19/07), after my last reload, my username and Administrator access rights were suddenly changed from the Owner/Administrator to just someone who has limited access. I don't know what my user name is because there isn't a Welcome screen.I haven't been able to find them under "Users" in the Control Panal. Unfortunately, the Control Panal itself disappeared as of last night.
