Keyboard Laptop: "windows"-R Shortcut To Start A Run Command?
Jul 1, 2005
How do you key a "windows"-R shortcut to start a run command? On Swiss French keyboard layout, the usual key immediately on the right of the shift is missing; how do you type a backslash is this keyboard config?
I can't access the "Run" command from the start menu. When I click on it windows brings up a message box saying "Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" Even if I click yes, the shortcut doesn't do anything. I can still access the run command by using the windows button + r on the keyboard. This affects the "Search" and "Help & Support" commands too.
In a not updated Version of Windows XP you can run (Start-run) "start"command at the Run dialog just typing it, when you update windows andwrite the same "start" into Run dialog Windows shows a error message >Windows cannot find `start`. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for the file, click the Start button, andthen click Search. If you are in CMD the `start` command works fine but the problem is thein Run dialog windows doesn’t recognize it ?
A quick and easy way to get system properties:Hold down your Windows Key and press Pause (Break), releasing both and just like magic up pops the System properties window.
Here is a keyboard shortcut to the System Properties menu:Press: WINDOWS KEY + REAKNote: In versions earlier than Win XP this shortcut will bring up the device manager.
It seems quite severe and I have no idea where to start. When power on my laptop, the screen comes up as usual asking me if i want to enter bios. the next thing i see on the screen, is it checking the cd drive for a boot device, at which point (if there is no cd in there) the laptop automatically restarts. I tried using the windows xp setup cd to boot, but that wont help, I dont want to delete everything on my laptop as all my work is on there! Ive tried using another boot cd (ultimate boot cd) but thats way to complicated, i dont know which utility to choose.I also dont have a floppy drive on my laptop, and im running winxp home edition.
I have a computer that is running windows xp home edition. I cannot create a shortcut to the windows explorer application on my desktop, as the windows explorer program does not appear in the programs window. I know that if I click on the start menu and navagate to the programs icon, a second window wil appear showing all of the programs that are installed on my computer. However in the programs menu, I cannot see my explorer application anywhere.
Since I uploaded the update of Windows Defender my options on my PC have changed.I can no longer type any particular letters using my keybord without a window popping up. Here are the following keys which causes me problems: E = Opens up My Computer R= RUN U= Utilility Manager D= Desktop F= Search Results L= Login Window M= Desktop I cannot type in Google, Firefox address bar. If I press one of these keys while I'm on my Desktop these actions occur too.
Is there a shortcut for minimizing windows? I am finding it annoying to have to go to the mouse each time, and I don't like alt-tabbing with so many open windows.
I must have assigned a windows shortcut that went to "Google Advanced Search.url", for when I type CONTROL-ALT-G, it pops up a window that says, "missing shortcut windows is searching for Google Advanced Search.url. To locate the file yourself click browse."I no longer have a file by this name on the machine.
Another problem i am having. When i click on the "run", "search" or the "help and support" links in my windows xp start menu it tries to create a shortcut! This also happens when i click on internet explorer on my desktop. Any ideas why?!
I didn't find an existing thread to the topic, so i apologize if the question has already been answered. at one point in time i had a mahjongg game installed on my windows xp run pc. i placed a shortcut on the start menu (above the frequent programs list). somehow or other, the shortcut was not removed when i uninstalled the program. my attempts to get rid of it since then are as follows:
1. when i right click on the icon, and select "remove from this list", nothing happens. 2. i attempt to run the shortcut and it says "the item you selected is not available. it might have been moved, renamed, or removed. do you want to remove it from the list?" i select yes, and nothing happens. 3. i attempt to rename the shortcut and it says "cannot rename file: cannot read from the source file or disk." 4. i open the properties and there is a message in the target type field saying "this is not a valid shortcut". i cannot change any of the fields without getting the error message in #3. 5. reinstalling the game doesn't change anything. i get the same error messages as above. 6. i searched through the registry for anything named "mahjongg", and it doesn't turn anything up.
I want to add a FOLDER as a shortcut in the MAIN part of the start menu. I would prefer it be where "My Computer", "My Documents", etc is, but I would settle for where "Internet" and "E-Mail" currently are. I can successfully add apps to that area, but not folders. I basically just want to click the start menu, click on the folder, and have it open up.
This is how to add a shortcut to the XP Start Menu in addition to the default "Internet Explorer" and "Outlook Express" (when XP Start Menu is in XP Style, not classic). Right click any application icon in Start Menu, on the desktop or in Explorer and select "Pin to Start Menu". Alternatively just drag and drop the icon to the Start button.
I have a Dell and my keyboard is in pretty bad shape. Some keys are sticky and the key covers (not sure what they are called) are missing making it difficult to type. Are there refurbished ones that would work? Is changing out a keyboard a hard thing to do? Will a generic keyboard work or would it have to be a Dell?
I have a Sony Vaio Laptop. The keyboard will not respond in windows at the login screen, not even in to go into safemode. It will however work in BIOS, I rebooted several times, still no dice, held down the Fn key and hit keys to no avail. But at the login screen I can hit Fn+f8 and it'll toggle the screen from lcd to external and back, can also eject the cdrom. I am stuck cause i cant login to XP.
I had left my computer on when i left town for a day. When i was back the computer was at the windows login screen. I am assuming that at some point while i was gone an automatic windows upate may have been installed which forced the computer to reboot. the update may have messed up my keyboard drivers. any help would be greatly appreciated as at this point im stuck!!!! thanks in advance
I have a new Dell Laptop and I want to use an external keyboard. I have converted the Laptop to Brazil Potugues and I want to use a Portugues Keyboard. Now when I connect it via USB, the three ^Lock^ lights start flashing but the keyboard will not work and there is no selection for a Portugeus keyboard in the Windows
In the last few weeks I have noticed that if I try to search for a file or folder by clicking "Search" on the start menu I am not able to open the search window. I used to be able to do it this way until quite recently. I can however, search by opening a new explorer window and hitting the "Search" button on the tool bar.I have looked on Microsoft KB for a solution and tried repairing it by following Article ID:913503, to no avail. I also tried doing a system restore but no help. The problem has occurred on both my Desktop PC as well as my Laptop.Has anybody else come across this problem, and more importantly found a solution.I'm running XP MCE on both machines, with Norton Internet security on my laptop, and Zonealarm Pro Security Suite on my desktop PC.
The recently used files shortcut does not appear in my start menu. It cannot be solved as per help instructions, because the related command does not appear in the properties dialog box. Actually, the bottom part of the advanced tab is empty. I am using Win XP pro.
My laptop keyboard suddenly stopped working he other day. I uninstalled the driver and rebooted and got most, but not all, keboard function back. I removed the keyboard and inspected it but there was no sign of damage or of anything having been spilt on it. Also prior to this there had been no sign of any problem. The key that is completely non functional is del but if I press t or g i get tg and if I press y or h I get yh. Also (in word) pressing [ or , or . causes the first letter is a series to be capitalised whilst - takes you to save file.
whenever I start my laptop two windows search boxes open. This is irritating and it may be linked to the (more irritating) fact that in the right-click dropdown shortcut menu thing, the top option is 'search' instead of explore or open, so double clicking opens a search box, but I don't know. How do I change all that? I'd be really grateful for any pointers.
