Oct 14, 2008I am running XP SP3.I have been doing some desktop customization and somehow have gotten all of my .lnk files to behave strangely.If I double-click a .lnk file (a shortcut) it opens an explorer window (file browser not internet explorer) to the "my computer" directory.(for example, if i double-click my recycle bin it opens the recycle bin folder if i make a shortcut to the recycle bin and double-click that it opens an explorer window set to "my computer")if I right-click the .lnk file I see that the "explore" option is bolded indicating that this is the default action of a double-click. if instead, i choose "open" then the .lnk file behaves normally. now, i know that in order to change the default actions for a file type, i go to control panel->folder options->file types and find the extension that i want to modify.for some reason .lnk is not in my list of file types.... so then i tried adding it to my list but when i do this it shows up after i have done it but "apply" is greyed out and then if i close the folder option window and return to it there is no .lnk extension in the file types list.

Jan 3, 2005whenever I start my laptop two windows search boxes open. This is irritating and it may be linked to the (more irritating) fact that in the right-click dropdown shortcut menu thing, the top option is 'search' instead of explore or open, so double clicking opens a search box, but I don't know. How do I change all that? I'd be really grateful for any pointers.

Feb 13, 2007I can't access the "Run" command from the start menu. When I click on it windows brings up a message box saying "Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" Even if I click yes, the shortcut doesn't do anything. I can still access the run command by using the windows button + r on the keyboard. This affects the "Search" and "Help & Support" commands too.

Nov 6, 2007I had to restart my computer after it finished a spyware scan. It restarted just fine, but I noticed a lot of things wrong once I logged on.
1)can't minimize programs to the taskbar. They won't show up if I try to minimize them, but I can access them by using alt+tab.
2)can't hide inactive windows, no circle with the arrows to click to minimize. I've tried right clicking on the taskbar and going to properties, but when i click hide inactive icons, and click apply nothing happens. Also when I click the customize button, the customize notification menu is empty.
3)I have no sound. I went to the control panel and checked on the sound and audio devices. I went through all of the tabs and they all said there was no device, but when i checked the hardware properties it said everything was working properly.
4)when I access the task manager and click on the processes tab, the user name column is empty. Usually there is either administrator or system.Other than these problems, everything else works fine. I recently installed something before my computer restarted and I uninstalled it and restarted it again and the same problem was there. if anybody knows what to do I would be extremely greatful.
Cannot Minimize Any Open Program

Jun 3, 2006I got what I thought was gonna be a screensaver and background online, but the file is on my computer and I can't do anything with it. I can't move delete it, move it, rename it. Even if I right Click on it, nothing comes up. I've ran norton and nothing came up and the file just seems to be stuck in the folder it's in, I can't even move it to the recycle bin. May 9, 2010I have the oddest problem thats occuured in the past few days.It appears to be connected with the opening and closing and switching between tasks.For no apparent reason, the window you either want to close or one that's been opened and you need to say click on a button to start a task, just fails to respond. The only way to unfreeze and carry on with your work is to open task manager then you can click on any line of info on the list, dont take any action in task manager, just close it down. Then you can carry on with what you were doing.I'm running a relatively new machine with XP SP3.I've reinstalled XP and I've checked the machine for all sorts of nasties and there's nothing.
This problem can be in programs, browsers (firefox is the worst. If you load a new page, all the URL links will not be accessible, meaning when you mouse over they do not change the cursor, til you do what I mentioned withthe task manager).I have checked the system performance with task manager open and I am not getting any sudden drains on the machine, which is a pretty fast processor (dual core) and working with 4 Gb or RAM.One other thing I noticed. Say you have a page of icons on screen for example in control panel. Single click to highlight one of them and then I would usually double click to perform the action. Now I can't double click because I get a small box open withthe options available open etc.
I have no idea why this is happening, but I reckon it is connected to the problem.I am going nuts with this, because it is adding a lot of time to my PC day constantly having to unfreeze.If anyone can throw some possible causes. I honestly thought the reinstall would fix this once and for all but no such luck.If there's anything I have left out to aptly describe this problem, please ask.

This is only SOME exe's. Particularly, older programs. Word, excel, WordPerfect all work. Older apps don't.
I've tried the exe fixes on dougknox.com site and kelly's corner XP fix.
