I must have assigned a windows shortcut that went to "Google Advanced Search.url", for when I type CONTROL-ALT-G, it pops up a window that says, "missing shortcut windows is searching for Google Advanced Search.url. To locate the file yourself click browse."I no longer have a file by this name on the machine.

It does not say where the shortcut comes from.Also, the file is Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro, but I can't find the original file .exe where this is launching from. I checked C:Program Files, but that only has the initial set up files. Where are the actual files?

shortcut to the windows explorer application on my desktop, as the windows
explorer program does not appear in the programs window. I know that if I
click on the start menu and navagate to the programs icon, a second window
wil appear showing all of the programs that are installed on my computer.
However in the programs menu, I cannot see my explorer application anywhere.
I can still use system restore; but my problem is I can't seem to locate system restore on the start menu, I know that it used to be there. Is there any way to put the icon back on the start menu? Running Window XP Home Edition.

Another problem i am having. When i click on the "run", "search" or the "help and support" links in my windows xp start menu it tries to create a shortcut! This also happens when i click on internet explorer on my desktop. Any ideas why?!

whenever I start my laptop two windows search boxes open. This is irritating and it may be linked to the (more irritating) fact that in the right-click dropdown shortcut menu thing, the top option is 'search' instead of explore or open, so double clicking opens a search box, but I don't know. How do I change all that? I'd be really grateful for any pointers.

Turns out I wiped out some important .dlls that windows needs to start up correctly. I am hung up on a DOS screen that reads:

i found solutions for it.. but none of them worked.
one of them was to boot the WinXP CD... and go to the recovery console, which i did. However when i typed Boot /list i got this message: "there are currently no boot entries available to display."
I recently had Spyware on my computer, after I deleted it and rebooted the error message came up <windows root> system32hal.dll. missing ! I tried to reboot using the recovery console on the windows CD but windows cannot find the Sata hard drive at all So I cant use the CD to reinstall windows over existing windows either I have access to another system, without a floppy drive but not sure what the best method of solving this problem is...Dont want to reformat as I have things on the H/D I need, I know I should have backed up...unfortunately I didnt, wont happen again though, lesson well and truly learned

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell M1710 XPS laptop, recently because of a power cut it failed to boot because of a corrupt file. I've re-installed windows XP (for some reason I was not able to boot from CD and repair), now obviously alot of the programs that are still on the hardrive will not open because they need to be re-installed. Unfortunatly I'm stuck on a ship with very little internet access and no CD's to re-install stuff with. I don't know if its possible to get these things working
Anyway my major concern is I've lost alot of my I'tunes music and photos that were on my hard-drive before. They seem to be still on the harddrive as I still have only 10% of the drive left as free space and yet when I double click on C: drive on my computer there shows only 32 gigs of stuff in folders there and I cannot find any of my music (program files seem to be unaffected, there still on the drive as normal even if im unable to run them). Is there anyway to find these missing folders/files that still seem to be on my harddrive but not visable.
I have a small domain with about 20 XP SP3 client machines. There are 25 or so domain members. One of my users had some files "disappear" from his My Documents Folder. After checking the recycle bin and searching for hidden files and folders with no luck, I logged in as admin and looked at his C:documents and settings'username' folder and found that it was created on his original hire date in 2009. The cable is working properly, because my laptop can connect to the network through it. I need to connect to the internet on my new computer to run updates, download latest drivers, etc...basically getting this beast ready to start installing my favorite programs and games. But, when I plug the ethernet cable into the port on the mobo, windows doesnt detect it. There is no LAN option in the 'Network Connections' folder, but a '1394 Connection'. View 10 Replies View RelatedI can't access the "Run" command from the start menu. When I click on it windows brings up a message box saying "Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" Even if I click yes, the shortcut doesn't do anything. I can still access the run command by using the windows button + r on the keyboard. This affects the "Search" and "Help & Support" commands too.
