Some of my windows Xp icons are missing.I cant post an image of it cause i cant post any links but its the ones in the user administration of the control panel...the ones on the left hand side.Is their anyway to get them back?
View 2 RepliesAfter a malware infection (Inet2 and SpySherriff - which took over my desktop) I cleaned up some files, directories and registry-entries. Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?

View 14 Replies View RelatedHow to find my missing icons from my system tray bottom right of screen by the clock?i used to have the volume and a couple of others but for some reason they have gone. ive checked settings for example the properties show icon for the volume etc but still i cant see them.
I bought my Dell 4700 about 6 months ago and was just going through the discs that came with it. I remembered that the Dell did not come with a Windows XP install disc in case I need to re-format. Is this normal? There is an option under Start....Accessories....System Tools to create OS backup disc. Is that what I need to make a disc or should it have came with one?

View 10 Replies View Relatedi ran hijackthis straight out of the .exe file and i can't find the 'backup' folder anywhere (admittedly i don't even know if there is one) but in turning off some start up items, i just went 'i'm so over this' and lost my cool and ticked 2 run.dll files....makes for entertaining computing, this much i know.question one: can i just 'get' necessary .dll win xp sp2 files from somewhere?question two: is this somewhere, a)over the rainbow or b) would i have to 'do something recover style' with the win xp pro disc that would possibly hang me over the edge of losing data which c) is sparsely backed up because d) i'm a tool. question three: above all else, it takes 10min for start up (yes the entire process) to occur which inevitably leads me to having to enter the password for the user (admin) account. is this because of the missing run.dll files or is it because i changed the password not twice but thrice and therefore i may have confused it a little?
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I start my PC the only thing that appears is the wallpaper and the mouse arrow which does move but no right click. I've tried SafeMode and get only the words Safe Mode in four corners so I can't do a system restore. I've tried restoring to last known good configuration but I get the wallpaper again.The only thing I can think of doing is a full restoration but I have 300 itunes on my hardrive which are paid for.
If anyone has an idea how to get my programs & icons back, I'll try anything.

Win XP Home SP2. I have applications that should and did have icons in the taskbar. They are no longer there. Also, when I check the box for having an icon in the taskbar for Windows features like the speaker (volume control icon), it is ignored by windows. I am not a newbie, I know about hiding inactive icons, etc... I do not have hiding icons selected at all. I have checked and unchecked, started and restared the computer and the apps to try to trick windows into showing the icons, all to no avail. This happened when I removed a couple of Security applications: Comodo Firewall and Spyware Terminator. Both had HIPS enabled. The icons were there before I removed these apps, now they are not. I have subsequently reinstalled new versions of theset two apps.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just ran AVG, no malware, ran Ewido, found ''Trojan.Icq smiley.e'' that I deleted, ran Ad Aware, no malware.I have windows set for VIEW details and at tools/folder options, use windows classic folders, and APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS. This works properly until it decides NOT to work properly and reverts to showing ICONS.
In the past 3 days, this has happened about a dozen times. For no reason I can figure out, it just jumps back from DETAILS to ICONS in the folders.
I have some minor glitches in my system. I've been thinking about reformating the HD and reinstalling XP Pro. 2 questions: 1st is; if I back up my HD and then do a restore after reinstalling the os, won't I just restore the glitches I'm trying to get rid of? 2nd question; Since I've never done a reinstall and restore; will all my programs be restored just as if they have been installed (Drivers, programs, etc.); or do I have to reinstall all my programs and then do a restore so I get all the data that changed after they were installed?

View 13 Replies View RelatedI have had an ongoing problem with reinstalling xp pro where my hal.dll file suddenly goes missing. I thought it was an old harddrive problem but it just happened with one I bought not half a year ago.
I've read other forums and help sites about expanding it from the cd drive (which says it can't be done when I try) creating a new boot.ini, and writing a new boot sector. I've even reverted back to fdisking and formating with a windows 98 startup disk which worked for me a few times but now is seeming useless.
I go to appearance tab and change the size of my fonts under the desktop icons. I change the font size to 12. I click apply and it changes the fonts to 12. When I reboot, the fonts go back to the original 7 size. What do you think overrides the change.

My problem is that when I try to log into an account (any account) I see the desktop icons, task bar, start button for a second and then suddenly they disappear and I am left with the background. I can not bring up task manager (cntrl+alt+delete) or anything else. I have tried a few things:
1. Ran spyware be gone
2. Ran adaware (got a 'cannot find shell.dll' error after doing this)
3. Tried to using selective startup and disabling startup items (when I reboot it turns it back on)
4. Tried creating a new user account --- problem still occurs.
5. Finally tried a reinstall of XP. Significant to note that during this installation I get an error related to explorer.exe.
The first time I tried to reinstall it aborted the installation. I ran a repair on the programs (from disk that came from Dell with my pc). I then tried the reinstall again....I got further this time but still when it was at the point of installing explorer it through another error and said that the program was not installed.I do not know what to do next!
I don't know where to post this question so I'll try here! Can somebody please tell me how to retrieve my back and forward buttons in Firefox? Don't even know how I lost them.

i found solutions for it.. but none of them worked.
one of them was to boot the WinXP CD... and go to the recovery console, which i did. However when i typed Boot /list i got this message: "there are currently no boot entries available to display."
I have had the error message file missing or corrupt/WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIG|SYSTEM , it says to load xp setup and then hit r when prompted to start repair , however every time i try to do this it just reboots and takes me back to the same message. I have tried booting from cd with xp disc and service pack2 but i dont get any setup screen/options and no option to repair. I really do not want to lose this machine as it has all my own self produced music on it and in the past i have lost 2 machines full of tracks to other hardware related problems.

Each time I click on the time I receive this message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. Used HP's recovery console to run chkdsk and it fix errors on the volume. Wouldn't let me run the recovery disks I had to get from HP since they are not given with a new computer. Great I thought.Upon starting now, my antivirus won't run and a lot of Windows programs(Search adn System Restore just a blank page, Media Player, etc) .I can get IE to open up but no active X although it says it is enabled, also my home page doesn't show up at all but it is set to it. Those are some of the things I have found wrong so far as I am sure I have more.

It did something to my registry that now when i boot my computer i don't see any desktop icons on the desktop. All i see is the green windows background with the logo win xp home edition. i tried to get into the system restore by going thru the CTL + ALT+ Del then go in New Task and run to pop up the system restore point window. when i do that I get the system restore point window but the window is blank. No text no calender ( the usual restore point screen) to restore it to an earlier point. What do i do now.
