I installed an old game, and it ended up changing a lot of my icons back to the 95/98 versions of them, and I don't remember/know a way to get rid of them and replace them all with XP's again.
View 13 RepliesI'm trying to help a friend out.His XP crashed - says it is missing some config files etc.I cannot boot up in safe mode, can not repair via the recovery console and when I try to reinstall, it says there is an installation in progress and it won't go any further. (My friend tried to reinstall somehow, and has a few 1/2 installed versions accross his different hard drives.I want to restore from a ghost image we have, but the problem is, there is 7 months of data files (not backed up!) that I want to get saved first.I can boot up via a win98 boot disk and see the files, but I can't work out a way of getting them accross to another hard drive easily. In the old days, I'd use xcopy with the "/s" switch to take all the sub directories etc, but I can't find xcopy in XP or get any copy functions to work
View 3 Replies View RelatedI downloaded a preview of a game and after I was done playing it I closed the window and everything was bigger the icons fonts taks bars everything. i would like to have everything back to normal size but when i went into properties it was already on normal size. I ran my ad ware scanner and virus scanner and there was nothing. Oh ya my operating system is Windows XP.

Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?

I ran a bunch of different spyware removal tools and now whe nI try to play swat-4 TSS I have the most terrible lag in the world. Played this game for a yr with NO problems. Lag problem started after I ran those programs. I am curious if the spyware removal proggies didn't take a file or two that I need for internet connection.I know there was somewhere in win 98 that I could check windows for missing corrupt window files and have them replaced and or repaired can you do that with XP and how do I get there ?

If I want to rename or delete a icon I have to use explore to do so. Also some times when using the explore the system crashes. I have run virus scans, defrag, Norton Windows Utilities, and Spy Sweeper all come back clean. I go to the task list to check what processes are running but everything seems to low. The cpu shows 2% to 4% usage. My second problem is USB connections. I can no longer sync with my Dell Axim. I have disconnected and reconnected the USB connection and reinstalled the Microsoft 4.2 Activesync software but nothing helps. My USB printers still works.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with my desktop. I keep placing my icons where I want them on the desktop and every time I either reboot or refresh the desktop they jumble up again. The only thing I have checked in the properties menu is "Show Desktop Icons". I have installed "Icon Restore" and it works until I run a program, open a browser, or even open "My Computer". When I close whatever I am working on and return to the desktop, everything is jumbled again. In addition, the taskbar properties keep changing on reboot. On the Properties menu I have "Keep the taskbar on top" etc., "Group similar" etc., and "Show Quick Launch" checked. I also have several items in the notifications area set to "always show". On reboot, the "Show Quick Launch" becomes unchecked, and the notification area items either change to "hide when inactive" or become part of the "Past Items" list.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I start my PC the only thing that appears is the wallpaper and the mouse arrow which does move but no right click. I've tried SafeMode and get only the words Safe Mode in four corners so I can't do a system restore. I've tried restoring to last known good configuration but I get the wallpaper again.The only thing I can think of doing is a full restoration but I have 300 itunes on my hardrive which are paid for.
If anyone has an idea how to get my programs & icons back, I'll try anything.
my compy has been broken for almost a year, but i finally took it upon myself to find a solution. i followed the instructions for the problem "the system is not fully installed. please run setup again." and it seemed it was going to work. but now i'm getting stuck at this screen that says "please wait while windows prepares to start" and the dots just keep going forever! XD it feels like i'm close to finally fixing the frickin thing, but i can't get past this. so if someone could please tell me how to get past it, i'll give a virtual pat on the back. oh, and it's a compaq windows XP.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWin XP Home SP2. I have applications that should and did have icons in the taskbar. They are no longer there. Also, when I check the box for having an icon in the taskbar for Windows features like the speaker (volume control icon), it is ignored by windows. I am not a newbie, I know about hiding inactive icons, etc... I do not have hiding icons selected at all. I have checked and unchecked, started and restared the computer and the apps to try to trick windows into showing the icons, all to no avail. This happened when I removed a couple of Security applications: Comodo Firewall and Spyware Terminator. Both had HIPS enabled. The icons were there before I removed these apps, now they are not. I have subsequently reinstalled new versions of theset two apps.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just ran AVG, no malware, ran Ewido, found ''Trojan.Icq smiley.e'' that I deleted, ran Ad Aware, no malware.I have windows set for VIEW details and at tools/folder options, use windows classic folders, and APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS. This works properly until it decides NOT to work properly and reverts to showing ICONS.
In the past 3 days, this has happened about a dozen times. For no reason I can figure out, it just jumps back from DETAILS to ICONS in the folders.
Ever since I installed XP SP2 my Trash Can Icon is missing and the network places icon was never ever there from when I installed XP (few days ago). I miss my icons! Why aren't they there and why do they refuse to come back?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI go to appearance tab and change the size of my fonts under the desktop icons. I change the font size to 12. I click apply and it changes the fonts to 12. When I reboot, the fonts go back to the original 7 size. What do you think overrides the change.

The first two of the 3 check boxes underneath are ticked. I have no idea what the default action was before, but I don't see anything resembling simply open a folder. Can anyone help me reset the default action or create a new one to open the folder?
When booting up, I'm presented with a timed screen with two options : Windows XP home edition build 2600; and Windows XP home edition build 2600? I have a feeling that this has occured from having to re-install XP due to a mysterious file becoming corrupted (HAL.dll in SYSTEM32 folder).

Which of them should I install first if I were to choose to do so? And, about how much space should I make for the Windows installments? I'm planning to install and store every other possible thing to a 3rd or 4th partition. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a .mov on my system that will play on a Mac, but not on a PC. I've tried it on various Windows machines, various Quicktime versions, and I have tons of codecs. The error I get when trying to open it in quicktime is "Error - 2048: the file is not a movie file" Trying to open it in Media Player Classic tells me it cannot render it. I also cannot convert it to another format. VirtualDub, among other converters, won't pick it up. I can't tell you the Mac version is plays on, but I am confident it is at least a year or two old.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am curious to the whole 4 Gig issue with 32 bit versions of Windows XP. I understand that 64-bit versions of XP/Vista support more than 4 Gigs, while 32-bit versions only support like 3.5Gigs (recognizable, while the rest is used by the kernel). My issue is, I currently purchased a new system and am trying to figure out which Windows OS would be the best for me. This new system will have 4 Gig's or RAM along with a 64-bit processor, so I guess the question I'm asking is should I get a 64-bit version of XP Pro or look into Vista.
This new system is a gaming machine. Currently I am on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 32-bit and I love it, but since that will not suffice for the new hardware I'm looking for recommendations. Whatever I can get closest to on those terms would probably get best for me.
In setting up my first home network, I decided to update to XP. My new computer had SP Home preinstalled and I bought and installed XP Pro SP2 on my older computer. I lost my way somehow in installing XP Pro on my older computer and in frustration tried to overwrite the first install with a new one. Unfortuantely, that didn't work and resulted in two versions of XP being active.On boot-up I was presented with a choice of "Windows XP Professional" or "Windows XP Professional". Despite the identical nomenclature, the first one in the boot sequence was my original attempt at XP and the second in the sequence was my second XP installation with which I had hoped to overwrite the first I decided to go into the Documents and Settings section (and anywhere else that seemed logical) of XP and delete any references that I could find to the first installation of XP.
