I just ran AVG, no malware, ran Ewido, found ''Trojan.Icq smiley.e'' that I deleted, ran Ad Aware, no malware.I have windows set for VIEW details and at tools/folder options, use windows classic folders, and APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS. This works properly until it decides NOT to work properly and reverts to showing ICONS.
In the past 3 days, this has happened about a dozen times. For no reason I can figure out, it just jumps back from DETAILS to ICONS in the folders.
I just did a clean install of XP Home on my mother? s Inspiron 1200, thinking it had pickup a virus or some kind of bug. It was very sluggish and was having a hard time booting up. Since I did the install the machine is acting a lot better, it boots faster & shuts off fine. But, after it gets warmed up, when you click on an item (Microsoft Word) on the menu bar, like edit to cut & paste, the shaded area jumps back and forth. It will jump back to file, then to format. The hotter the machine get the more this happens, then I have a hard time cutting the machine off, does anybody know what is going on? Is it a hardware problem or software problem?
Ever since I did a factory reinstall 3 months ago, every time I close my machine down and restart, my Windows Explorer settings keep getting reverted back to ICON view instead of my saved DETAIL view.I'm using the button under tools and folder options, View Tab, and Apply to all Folders. Is there something else I'm missing?
Please help urgently as I am not able to login. After inputting my password it says loading user configuration and after that it again jumps back to login screen.
After a malware infection (Inet2 and SpySherriff - which took over my desktop) I cleaned up some files, directories and registry-entries. Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?
When I start my PC the only thing that appears is the wallpaper and the mouse arrow which does move but no right click. I've tried SafeMode and get only the words Safe Mode in four corners so I can't do a system restore. I've tried restoring to last known good configuration but I get the wallpaper again. The only thing I can think of doing is a full restoration but I have 300 itunes on my hardrive which are paid for. If anyone has an idea how to get my programs & icons back, I'll try anything.
Win XP Home SP2. I have applications that should and did have icons in the taskbar. They are no longer there. Also, when I check the box for having an icon in the taskbar for Windows features like the speaker (volume control icon), it is ignored by windows. I am not a newbie, I know about hiding inactive icons, etc... I do not have hiding icons selected at all. I have checked and unchecked, started and restared the computer and the apps to try to trick windows into showing the icons, all to no avail. This happened when I removed a couple of Security applications: Comodo Firewall and Spyware Terminator. Both had HIPS enabled. The icons were there before I removed these apps, now they are not. I have subsequently reinstalled new versions of theset two apps.
I've gone and set all the icons in my System tray, lower right corner, to ALWAYS BE HIDDEN, yet they keep coming back. Is there a registry tweak I can use? I'm using XP Home on a Compaq Laptop V5000.
Some of my windows Xp icons are missing.I cant post an image of it cause i cant post any links but its the ones in the user administration of the control panel...the ones on the left hand side.Is their anyway to get them back?
I've been having this problem a lot over the past year or so where I might be typing a sentence (and I think this only happens when posting at message boards) and sometimes in the middle of a word the cursor will suddenly jump to another place in the paragraph. As an example, it happened just now. When I was typing the word "sentence" above, in the middle of typing the word, the cursor jumped up to the title and the "ten" part of the word got mixed in with the word "typing" in the thread title. Sounds more complicated than it is, just wanted to give that as an example...and oh, it just happened again haha, while I was typing "give." I'm not sure if this happens to me in Word too, but I don't think so. Anyone have an idea why the cursor would just randomly and suddenly jump to another point in the text?
I have a brand new install of XP Professional on a Dell with a 3.2Ghz CPU, with 1.5Gig of RAM in it. I setup a mapped drive to my file server from this XP workstation (all this is runing on my home network). As soon as I access this share and start to drill down through its folders, the CPU jumps to near 100%, rendering it useless. The task manager shows explorer.exe and system as being the two biggest resources of the CPU. If I close the share, the CPU doesn't let go. However, if I click on "disconnect" on that network drive, it lets go and returns to normal.I have disabled my anti virus and firewall to rule that out, but it keeps happening anyways. usually I just reboot to get back the CPU, but as I said above, last time I tried just disconnecting from the mapped drive, and that worked. What could be the issue? I never had any issues on my Windows 2000 machine accessing this same share, what could be XP's problem? I spent hours setting this machine up, but I am about ready to go back to 2000.
Ever since I installed XP SP2 my Trash Can Icon is missing and the network places icon was never ever there from when I installed XP (few days ago). I miss my icons! Why aren't they there and why do they refuse to come back?
Can you tell me if it's possible to change the icons back to the original ones from websites? All my Favorite icons are the same (the default IE icon). Is it possible to change them all together or they have to be done one by one?
Is there a way to customize the details shown in the Details portion of the web view(left pane) in Windows Explorer? I know how to select which details to view in the folder view (right pane) but it seems not to have a bearing on the other.
I installed an old game, and it ended up changing a lot of my icons back to the 95/98 versions of them, and I don't remember/know a way to get rid of them and replace them all with XP's again.
In the days of Windows 3.1, I had a program called In Control. Before installing a program, I would start InControl and it would then monitor and record every change to the system made by the installation, every line added to WINDOWS.INI, SYSTEM.INI, every file added or modified and even recorded changes in file time stamps and versions for DLLs etc.Is there anything that thorough for Windows 2000/XP. I want to be able to examine such a record that would not only record file version changes and files added or modified but also every line added, deleted or changed in the Windows Registry. Is there such a utility that really gets it all, down to the last detail?
I go to appearance tab and change the size of my fonts under the desktop icons. I change the font size to 12. I click apply and it changes the fonts to 12. When I reboot, the fonts go back to the original 7 size. What do you think overrides the change.
I have xp pro sp 2 installed in my computer. I want to revert to win older version because of speed issues. I have Win 2000 pro Bootable CD. Could anyone give me the detail procedure on how to format the HDD and Install Win 2000 pro init?
Recently, i've been trying to sort a large amount of music files by bitrate, artist, album etc. when i select a file i have some difficulty following the line because there are so many similar files around it. I've tried folder options but nothing there can help me.i'd like to see if i can do something to to highlight the whole line instead of just the name when i click it.i made that little vision of i what i wanted it to be like in paint.
In windows 2000, explorer to the left of the folders view, their was a panel that would contain folder/file detail information. This was always displayed even when Folders view was selected to show the folder tree. In XP i can not figure how to get this panel or left side detail view to show. If I close the folders view then I get a left panel that has tasks/places/details tabs. The details tab contains what ai want for info but i also like to have the folders tree viewing also, but it does not display. When I click on folders viiew this window/panel/whatever witht the details in it disappears.
I did an AVG Rootkit scan which turned up "c:windows/system32/userinit.exe" as a dodgy file. I removed it and now the machine won't login when I boot the system. With a bit more digging it seems that this file was actually the login information within the registry and as it can't find a valid user/password it just keeps asking me click the user name and login. When I click it just loops back and throws back up the window, asking me to click the user name again. How I can access the registry and reset the userinit.exe file?I've tried selecting "last good configuration" which didn't work.I also tried to download Bart PE on another machine (running Vista) to set up a boot CD, but it wasn't particularly clear how to go about it, so I tried using the XP System Recovery app on the install disks. This got me into a C: prompt.
I bought my Dell 4700 about 6 months ago and was just going through the discs that came with it. I remembered that the Dell did not come with a Windows XP install disc in case I need to re-format. Is this normal? There is an option under Start....Accessories....System Tools to create OS backup disc. Is that what I need to make a disc or should it have came with one?
Are you guys having the same problem? Using IE7, when viewing a thread, if I hit the back arrow to go back to the page I was previously viewing, it doesn't move at all. It started acting weird a couple of days ago when it took sometimes two hits on the back arrow to go back. Now it doesn't go back to the previous page at all.
I am trying to back up my docs and system when I do on either the wizard or the advanced mode-it still tells me "the back up file name could not be used: "Eackup.bkf" " please ensure that it is a valid path and the you have sufficent access."
My control panel has changed from a page full of icons to a long dropdown strip of small icons with there lables. There is no obivous way in to alter anything.
i have searched everywhere to do this , no site seemed to know how to get rid of it so i am helping the troubled with this problem, well not really a problem but an adjustment..it is a piece of cake. first right click on the desktop, go to arrange icons by ,uncheck lock web items to desktop(bang it's done).
I started my computer today and all of the icons pointing to Microsoft Office files, Adobe Acrobat files, and similar files have been replaced by generic windows icons (white icon with little window in the middle) they are no longer program specific icons.Yes, I have tried TweakUI to rebuild the icons and it did nothing, I have tried increasing then decreasing the size of the icons to attempt to force windows to replace them with the correct icons and that has not worked either. I have also tried to use system restore and that did not help either. This is really making me angry and I don't understand why it happened I have searched everywhere for a solution and found nothing.
Down on the bottom of my desktop this thing keeps hidding my icons. I click on the little arrow to show hidden icons and they show for a second then they . disappear. I would like to see them.
