View 13 RepliesI just ran AVG, no malware, ran Ewido, found ''Trojan.Icq smiley.e'' that I deleted, ran Ad Aware, no malware.I have windows set for VIEW details and at tools/folder options, use windows classic folders, and APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS. This works properly until it decides NOT to work properly and reverts to showing ICONS.
In the past 3 days, this has happened about a dozen times. For no reason I can figure out, it just jumps back from DETAILS to ICONS in the folders.
I just did a clean install of XP Home on my mother? s Inspiron 1200, thinking it had pickup a virus or some kind of bug. It was very sluggish and was having a hard time booting up. Since I did the install the machine is acting a lot better, it boots faster & shuts off fine. But, after it gets warmed up, when you click on an item (Microsoft Word) on the menu bar, like edit to cut & paste, the shaded area jumps back and forth. It will jump back to file, then to format. The hotter the machine get the more this happens, then I have a hard time cutting the machine off, does anybody know what is going on? Is it a hardware problem or software problem?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP and I think I may have a problem. In my task bar I have aan icon that is a red sphere with a "X"n it. I keep having a balloon that pops up saying my "computer is infected" and to use a special spyware tool to remove it. It also says "Windows will download the most up to date antispyware for me and to click on the Icon. When I click on the Icon, nothing happens. I've run "Ad-Aware SE" and still have the "Balloon". This balloon keeps popping up very often and I "x" and it disappears for a little bit and reappears. I also have another balloon that says updates are ready to be downloaded. I click on it and Windows Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard comes up to be installed. When I try to install, it says installation was unsuccessful. The "computer infected" balloon really bothers me the most and I would like to know how to correct this.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy wife's machine has been running slowly, and I am certain it is full of junk. Earlier I had improved things amazingly by uninstalling McAffee and replacing w/ AVG. Now it's all bogged down again, and a reboot does little to help. In addition, some Windows features have been squirrely for a long time, for example the Windows task bar likes to disappear and not come back. We've never been able to get Eudora (free version) to function properly.

Then I would lock the taskbar. Then the next time I rebooted, the icon was gone. Sometimes the icon won't even appear in the taskbar when I put the little check mark where it belongs in the control panel.

This is a difficult problem that I have worked on for months One source suggested conducting a repair reinstall of the Windows XP Media Center Edition software. I have made some registry edits previously, and this may be part of the problem.
View 14 Replies View RelatedThis is a very simple matter. I have always had an icon on my taskbar for accessing my desktop that I use quite often. Its been there so long that I can't remember if I put it there or if it came that way on the computer. Tonight, the icon had changed and when I clicked on it, I got the little flashlight and asked if I wanted to search. Grrrr. Not the end of the world but I would really like to have it back.
View 13 Replies View Relatedwhen I click on an icon, say 'My Computer' on the desktop, everything but the background picture disappears, then comes back, but 'My Compute'r is not open. I'll click again and it opens. This happens if I open a program with a single click from the lower tool bar area also. I've noticed the screen will flicker once, after which invariably this situation occurs. I recently dumped and reinstalled Firefox, but before that I opened it one day and there was a one inch high field with some message I've since forgotten at the bottom of the window, and the Google logo, etc. was all shifted to the right. It's then that I reinstalled Firefox.

1. Right-click within the notification area, and then click Properties.
2. On the Taskbar tab, click Customize.
3. Select Safely remove hardware, and in the Behavior column, click Always hide.
