View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem with the task bar. I used to have it on the bottom of my screen, but now it is on the top. not sure how it got there. I tried to move it back to the bottom but it won't go... I can move it up and down, but not to the side or bottom.

Now it's all bogged down again, and a reboot does little to help. In addition, some Windows features have been squirrely for a long time, for example the Windows task bar likes to disappear and not come back. We've never been able to get Eudora (free version) to function properly.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI did an AVG Rootkit scan which turned up "c:windows/system32/userinit.exe" as a dodgy file. I removed it and now the machine won't login when I boot the system. With a bit more digging it seems that this file was actually the login information within the registry and as it can't find a valid user/password it just keeps asking me click the user name and login. When I click it just loops back and throws back up the window, asking me to click the user name again. How I can access the registry and reset the userinit.exe file?I've tried selecting "last good configuration" which didn't work.I also tried to download Bart PE on another machine (running Vista) to set up a boot CD, but it wasn't particularly clear how to go about it, so I tried using the XP System Recovery app on the install disks. This got me into a C: prompt.

I remembered that the Dell did not come with a Windows XP install disc in case I need to re-format. Is this normal? There is an option under Start....Accessories....System Tools to create OS backup disc. Is that what I need to make a disc or should it have came with one?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought a copy of the above online to overwrite my French version of XP. I see, however, that it is intended for PC server manufacturers and assemblers ONLY. Does this mean I cannot use the disk to overwrite my software? I'm reluctant to try it without advice. Unfortunately, my husband broke the seal on the package when it arrived so presumably I can't exchange it if necessary.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having a VERY odd issue with Windows XP Pro and Tablet PC Edition. I have been following Microsoft's Single-Image Deployment Supplemental Guide which discusses single-image deployment and how to use this process to deploy Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 in your organization while using your existing Windows XP Professional image.I followed the article to a T and imported all the Tablet PC components in the Sysprep directory and then re-syspreped the box. At first once mini-setup finished the system would lock up on the Windows XP splash screen about the 3rd time the progress bar cycled through.

Is there a way so that when my son installs new software, (he seems to install about 10 new programs per day), it will ONLY populate his program list on his logon and NOT the program list for the other 3 users of the PC? I notice that some installations ask if there will be a single or multiple users of that program, but what I would really like is to be able to be selective EVERY TIME.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIn 2001 I purchased a Compact Presario with Windows XP Home Edition. I have slow dialup with MSN 9 as my browser and provider.Over the last few months, my PC has developed the following problems. They seem to have gotten worse when I was forced to upgrade from MSN 6 to MSN 9 last August.
1. About 70% of the time after signing in, I get a dialogue box that reads " Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close." I eventually log on after an attempt or two.
2. Pages sometimes freeze for up to 15-20 minutes before a new page finally opens up.
3. About once a week, I get the smaller bubble that reads that I am running low on virtual memory.
4. Pages do not usually close when clicking on the "X" in the left corner.
I recently signed into www.double my speed.com for a scan. The scan detected 837 errors of various sorts.I spent nearly three hours speaking to one of their techs from India who took over my computer ostensibly to diagnose the problem. He eventually determined that the $40 annual "fix it" option would not work because I have " very, very bad things" on my computer that needed my immediate attention. He showed me the page with all my errors, and took me to google which explains them. He said I was a victim of hacking. He took me to a page where I was going to get immediate help. Of course, all this help was going to cost $250 for the package. I hung up and disconnected.I am very un savvy when it comes to computers, but I seriously doubt I need to spend $250 to take care of these problems.I would greatly appreciate the simplest and/or least expensive way to get rid of these problems.I should add that my Norton anti-virus only detects low risk tracking cookies every week, and nothing else.I performed a sweep of these cookies today and got rid of them , but this did not speed things up or eliminate errors.
I have three querries,
(1) my desktop configuration is ASUS motherboard P5KPL AM/PS, with pentium (R) dual core CPU 2.7 GHz, 320 GB hard disk, 1 GB DDR2 RAM and NVIDIA getForce 8400 GS. My question is when i tried putting a single 2 GB RAM, it was showing error and the system became unstable. What could be the reason?
pretty much fed up with vista generally not working with crossfire and stuff especially with the altest catalyst release it was always a problem even when i was using single card though.. not to mention the other issues. Is XP 64bit any good? Are there a lot of issues?

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy work PC has 2 monitors, and my home PC has 1. When I connect to my work PC, I see only the primary monitor, which is what I want. I have a problem with a certain application though, it opens properly in the primary monitor, but has a dialog box that seems to be opening in the secondary monitor (I can't see it, but I am able "guess" my way around it with the keyboard). Is there any way to force everything onto the primary monitor?

View 3 Replies View RelatedEvery once in a while my pc acts really nutty. What happens is that I'll go to open a program (lets say Nero Burning Rom) and on a single double click Nero will open up 70+ times. Furthermore, it makes mostly all of my programs act up when this starts happening. For example, when I click the arrow in the system tray it expands and collapses tons of times before it stops. If I open Firefox my homepage sort of half loads over and over and won't stop. MSN Messenger opens up then freaks out when I put the pointer in its window (this happens in the above Firefox example too). All of this activity makes the pc unusable until it all stops. Speaking of when it stops, it does't stop with a restart, it just stops mid session. I thought it could be a mouse problem because the trackball I use is pretty ancient and I figured it just might have just petered out finally, but then I tried another mouse that I found laying around and it did the same things. One other thing I've noticed it (the trackball) doing is when it's not being used the pointer slowly crawls towards the top of the screen. I've run my anti-virus and all three of my spyware programs and none of them find anything out of the ordinary. So what could be causing this? I'm starting to think it might be my mouse port, but how would I find this out?
