Can't Back Up On Back Up Documents And System Files
Sep 1, 2005
I am trying to back up my docs and system when I do on either the wizard or the advanced mode-it still tells me "the back up file name could not be used: "Eackup.bkf" " please ensure that it is a valid path and the you have sufficent access."
I have a user's My Documents folder redirected to a share on our domain controller. The name of this user's My Documents folder is username's Documents. Whenever I try to change this to My Documents, it immediately reverts back to username's Documents. However, if I open a command window and say dir, I see My Documents which is what I would expect.
I did an AVG Rootkit scan which turned up "c:windows/system32/userinit.exe" as a dodgy file. I removed it and now the machine won't login when I boot the system. With a bit more digging it seems that this file was actually the login information within the registry and as it can't find a valid user/password it just keeps asking me click the user name and login. When I click it just loops back and throws back up the window, asking me to click the user name again. How I can access the registry and reset the userinit.exe file?I've tried selecting "last good configuration" which didn't work.I also tried to download Bart PE on another machine (running Vista) to set up a boot CD, but it wasn't particularly clear how to go about it, so I tried using the XP System Recovery app on the install disks. This got me into a C: prompt.
I bought my Dell 4700 about 6 months ago and was just going through the discs that came with it. I remembered that the Dell did not come with a Windows XP install disc in case I need to re-format. Is this normal? There is an option under Start....Accessories....System Tools to create OS backup disc. Is that what I need to make a disc or should it have came with one?
Are you guys having the same problem? Using IE7, when viewing a thread, if I hit the back arrow to go back to the page I was previously viewing, it doesn't move at all. It started acting weird a couple of days ago when it took sometimes two hits on the back arrow to go back. Now it doesn't go back to the previous page at all.
Some time ago, my PC had some serious problem and I lost most of my windows files... or files in my windows dir. To get back to my files I re-installed windows.. somehow. Anyway... it works pretty good for the most part but it does seem to load very slowly most of the time... Can you suggest anything to help? HJT log.
Im having trouble backing files up on my computer. When i try to copy ANY file on my computer (cause ive tried to do some trial and error), it gives me this:"This file 'name' has extra information attatched to it that might be lost if you continue copying. The contents of the file will not be affected. Do you want to copy the file anyway? "I then click "Yes" but then it gives me another error about how windows has encountered an error while trying to copy the file. I have yet to read up on somebody who ahs had this problem.Ive read that is has something to do with the datastream that gets created within a file. I also read something about ADS, which I have no idea what it is. All in all, its a problem in which i am having trouble copying files from my NTSF drive (Harddive) to a FAT drive (CD/DVD).
I bought a Toshiba laptop in January. Tonight, just randomly, everything got SUPER slow. Programs began to freeze and I'm having to continously restart. I'm currently on the family computer. I can't seem to find the problem. I've deleted a whole bunch of "useless" programs and files. I've done a virus scan, but still it doesn't seem to be working.I recieved a "Product Recovery" disc when I got my laptop that I'm going to use, but I just have a few things that I wanted to make sure about before I did. Hopefully somebody could help me.In the manual it tells me that once I use this disc, all my data will be erased. Okay, so I put all "My Documents" on a Back-Up Files file? Does that make sense? There was a program on my computer that I used for it. I saved the File that's titled "Backup" in My Documents. If I do restart my whole computer, erasing all the data from it, what's going to happen with my "Backup.bkf" file? Will it still be in my My Documents folder?
I'm so concerned with that because I have SO MANY things that I can't just throw away. I've tried sending most of my stuff to my e-mail, but my computer is being way to slow to do all my files and folders. I can't even compress them and send. It's like it has cancer. Can anybody help me? I feel like such an idiot, but this is the only time I've had trouble with this laptop. I really can't just go and get it fixed with a professional. We don't exactly have a lot of money right now.
My Dell Dimension 8400 suddenly won't boot up, and Dell told me I would have to reinstall the OS (XP Media Center Edition). I would rather try to repair the boot files first in order to save all of my apps, drivers and files. But before trying this, I would like to move my SATA HDD to another PC and make it a slave so that I can backup my files to an external HD. Is this a complex task? Dell also told me that all of my OE apps are stored on a partition in my HDD, so a reinstall will put me back to the way my PC was when I first got it, but I would then have to try to find all the drivers for everything I have since installed.
The "documents" option (which displays recent documents) is missing from my start menu. I have tried EVERYTHING! Does anybody have any idea how to get it back. There is no obvious, intuitive way to do this.
I need to get into some user hidden files like application data etc so I can reconfigure some things.I run CFS3 and when there is a conf problem sometimes one needs to delete the Appdata folder to reset it as well as dropping in files so I do not have to do a new complete confg of controls.I have it on my smaller PC but completely forgot how to set it up to see on my new build.
I'm running Win XP. I was trying to get rid of windows messenger, and had gone into "add/delete prog." and then "add/delete windows components." There I UN-checked everything that was checked EXCEPT for windows messenger. the laptop proceeded in what i thought was deleting that program.
How does one get back Folders and files once you have used the Cut Command instead of delete, I use MS command Cut to delete and move Folders and Files from one HDD to another HDD, Now the HDD that I moved to has crashed. I need to go back to the original HDD and get back those folders and files but I need the folders intact so I know what file belongs to what programs, any suggestions.Help please.I lost a years work of Music Files, from Fruity Loops and also plug-ins that took time to create.I have not touched the HDD since I cut / Moved Files and Folders.
I'm looking to backup my data because I almost lost all my data when computer failed to start. After about 10 hard power shutdowns I got my computer back and it said Windows XP recovered from a serious Error. I think it had something to either do with the hard drive or Konfabulator.
WINDOWSSystem32smss.exe and C:WINDOWSsystem32winlogon.exe were accidently deleted. How can I get them back. My system retore was turned off so no chance going there if this was any possibility.
I would just like to know if I can fix the problem so then I can see my pictures. What can I do to fix the corrupted files? Can I retrieve my pictures back and if so How?
I just moved in to my buddy from work, and decided to put a pass on my PC, since a lot of people go thru the house on weekends. I set up an account, gave it admin privileges, but when setup asked: "would you like to give that account access to files?" (or some similar question) I selected NO. When account loaded I couldn't get access to any of my files! The problem now is that I can't delete that new account, because it's the only account! I tried setting up another one with administrator privileges, but it doesn't ask that question anymore (would you like to give that account access to files?), so I can't get access? Do you know a solution, or a step towards getting access to files back?
i accidently deleted my partition which had my original xp home sp 3 on i have used recuva to recover the lost files but now dont no how to get these files back onto my pc and reinstall my original xp home please can somebody give me directions i have been to local computer shops but they just want to put a brand new xp on and charge a lot i have the files so would rather just use them.
Yesterday I decided to cut and paste a 1.3 gig folder from one partition to another on a seperate drive. The file transfer proceeded, however, after a couple of minutes a message appeared saying it couldn't move the folder as it was currently being used by another program. I closed notepad which was the program involved. I then went to the partition where the folder was originally kept but the folder was not present. I went to partition where I had attempted to move the folder and found the folder but it was completely empty. Somewhere on my drives is 1.3 gig of infornmation in about six files,
I was wondering if someone knew how I can get my back button back. when I get into a site. it wont let me hit the back button at the top of the screen.
I accidently imported all computer files to Kazaa instead of only my music files, now I don't have a clue how to put them all back. It literally cleared my computer right out and my system restore option dissapeared off of my files, so that idea is scratched! I slowly recovered some files but all my software downloads are going to Kazaa now!
i have a comaq presario computer with win 2k. Due to a virus ,my hard drive crashed . When i try and boot up i get the blue screen of death telling me there is an error and i need to consult manufacturer . Is there a way i can restore my hard drive and get my files on there back even though the hard drive has crashed, if so can you tell me the steps.
My computer didn't come with an XP CD, just the manufacturer's restore CD which will wipe out all I've done in the last four years. So, if I backup (copy) all the files on my C drive, except the Windows folder (assuming that's where all the OS files are), to an external drive, then run the restore CD which will revert the computer back to the way it was when I bought it. Then download and install SP2 and copy the original files back to C.
I want to back up my files to an external hard drive using Windows Backup, but it is not shown as an option. The only options shown are the floppy and f: drives. Can you use this program to back up to an external drive? If so, how do you tell it where to send the data?
I started my system, which has ran XP Pro well for 2 years now, and it came up with a message box with some gibberish in it and a button to push which says OK. When I press the button windows starts but none of the programs which used to load at start up actually load. Instead I am prompted to pick programs from a list or look for them on the web. Also, once this is past, the icons on the desktop and all the start menu items have the app name followed by a .ink extension. This is pretty wierd. I cannot figure out how to get the system back. I do have all of my data on my c drive. If I book to a prompt I can see all of my data.
I got a windows vista computer and it came with an upgrade dvd. So i upgraded my windows xp to vista thinking I could change it back when I needed to use xp but I can`t . I went into the recovery console and it gave me 3 choices that I dont understand. I can now only use the vista version on both computers. How can I get Xp back?
1) this pblm started after i did a reinstall of windows some time back. my system works fine now but for one thing. at every boot after its done post, the screen goes blank/dark/black for about 40 seconds, then a white progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen and only then does the windows logo with the blue progress bar appears. from then on its smooth sailing, a few seconds till the welcome screen and i'm in windows.2) this hasn't happen for a few weeks now. sometimes while in windows the pc reboots by itself but during post it wont recognize the hd. like nothing connected to the ide cable. fixed it by disconnecting/reconnecting the ide cable
