View 3 RepliesWe currently running Windows XP Home on our 2 Pc's at home. Four people use the PC's and we each have our own logins. Is there a way so that when my son installs new software, (he seems to install about 10 new programs per day), it will ONLY populate his program list on his logon and NOT the program list for the other 3 users of the PC? I notice that some installations ask if there will be a single or multiple users of that program, but what I would really like is to be able to be selective EVERY TIME.
View 2 Replies View RelatedEvery once in a while my pc acts really nutty. What happens is that I'll go to open a program (lets say Nero Burning Rom) and on a single double click Nero will open up 70+ times. Furthermore, it makes mostly all of my programs act up when this starts happening. For example, when I click the arrow in the system tray it expands and collapses tons of times before it stops. If I open Firefox my homepage sort of half loads over and over and won't stop. MSN Messenger opens up then freaks out when I put the pointer in its window (this happens in the above Firefox example too). All of this activity makes the pc unusable until it all stops. Speaking of when it stops, it does't stop with a restart, it just stops mid session. I thought it could be a mouse problem because the trackball I use is pretty ancient and I figured it just might have just petered out finally, but then I tried another mouse that I found laying around and it did the same things. One other thing I've noticed it (the trackball) doing is when it's not being used the pointer slowly crawls towards the top of the screen. I've run my anti-virus and all three of my spyware programs and none of them find anything out of the ordinary. So what could be causing this? I'm starting to think it might be my mouse port, but how would I find this out?

Is there a program or software that will minimize all unnessary programs or take controll of what programs can run?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using a P4 2.8ghz system with 512 RAM and Windows XP SP2.I do run a secure computer (AVG on and updated, Zone Alarm, Spybot's Tea Timer, Win Patrol, AdAware & Spybot run regularly, occasionally I double check things at PandaScan online).I am on a DSL connection behind a router. Never had any revealed spyware or virus problems (other than tracking cookies). At times my CPU usage shoots up to a high percentage (90 - 100%, occasionally dropping slightly) and remains there indefinitely. Here is the puzzling part - when I check the list of processes (sorted by CPU) the only number over 5% is System Idle Process. In other words the sorted list will have System Idle Process using 90% or more (which should be "unused") but at the same time the CPU Usage at the bottom is at or near 100%. How can this happen? Can there be a hidden program using CPU time? Could it be a rootkit? Hardware problem?
This has been very hard to diagnose because while it shows up regularly, it does not show up all the time. I have thought it solved several times only to have it show up again. Here are what might be related factors. It most often happens shortly after booting up. Within a minute or less of the last programs loading CPU spikes and remains high.If I quickly "Engage Internet lock" (in Zone Alarm) just after booting it does NOT occur. Even if I un-engage the internet lock just a minute later. It does not always happen after boot-up. This is frustrating because I have tried disabling some startup programs (Skype, IP Phone Center (works with Skype and a cordless phone), TeaTimer) and thought the problem was resolved only to have it occur again later. It will occasionally occur at some random point during use (or non-use). When it does this it sometimes will only run up to 60-70% CPU and remain there (again with nothing other than System Idle Process over 5%).
I would really appreciate some advice concerning a troublesome computer.A friend who was running Windows XP on a two-years old computer began to experience occasional freezes and blue screens without any apparent pattern in program or usage. It eventually got so bad that we removed most of his installed software other than the essential, but problems continued. We then made a repair installation of Windows XP from the Dell OS installation disk, after which the computer would fall over every time after initial boot up. With sinking heart (of course, he had no image, but had data backups) we then formatted the hard disk and executed a fresh installation of Windows XP.
Windows now boots but the Windows directories contain very few folders or files. The CD drive can only be read perhaps 50% of the time. Most program installation files refuse to run, but some do. One installation disk which will not run is his internet installation. The computer continues to display sporadic blue screens. Before it goes out the window can anyone suggest our next course of enquiry?
My friend, who has given a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Win2K Pro. 512MB RAM To help her out, I got rid of porn, viruses, and spyware using: Ad-Aware, AVG spyware and AV free versions, Trend Micro House Call, Spybot I checked the task manager, and has constant 100% CPU usage, avg memory usage The system runs, but apps open slow, so I tried some freeware reg cleaners: CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Wise Registry cleaner.

I've disabled System Restore because it wouldn't let me go back in time anyway and this program is a known resource gobbler. Didn't help. I've attached a hijackthis logfile to see if anyone recognizes a Trojan, etc. I would appreciate any help at all.

Does this mean I cannot use the disk to overwrite my software? I'm reluctant to try it without advice. Unfortunately, my husband broke the seal on the package when it arrived so presumably I can't exchange it if necessary.

I have been following Microsoft's Single-Image Deployment Supplemental Guide which discusses single-image deployment and how to use this process to deploy Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 in your organization while using your existing Windows XP Professional image.I followed the article to a T and imported all the Tablet PC components in the Sysprep directory and then re-syspreped the box. At first once mini-setup finished the system would lock up on the Windows XP splash screen about the 3rd time the progress bar cycled through.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIn 2001 I purchased a Compact Presario with Windows XP Home Edition. I have slow dialup with MSN 9 as my browser and provider.Over the last few months, my PC has developed the following problems. They seem to have gotten worse when I was forced to upgrade from MSN 6 to MSN 9 last August.
1. About 70% of the time after signing in, I get a dialogue box that reads " Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close." I eventually log on after an attempt or two.
2. Pages sometimes freeze for up to 15-20 minutes before a new page finally opens up.
3. About once a week, I get the smaller bubble that reads that I am running low on virtual memory.
4. Pages do not usually close when clicking on the "X" in the left corner.
I recently signed into www.double my speed.com for a scan. The scan detected 837 errors of various sorts.I spent nearly three hours speaking to one of their techs from India who took over my computer ostensibly to diagnose the problem. He eventually determined that the $40 annual "fix it" option would not work because I have " very, very bad things" on my computer that needed my immediate attention. He showed me the page with all my errors, and took me to google which explains them. He said I was a victim of hacking. He took me to a page where I was going to get immediate help. Of course, all this help was going to cost $250 for the package. I hung up and disconnected.I am very un savvy when it comes to computers, but I seriously doubt I need to spend $250 to take care of these problems.I would greatly appreciate the simplest and/or least expensive way to get rid of these problems.I should add that my Norton anti-virus only detects low risk tracking cookies every week, and nothing else.I performed a sweep of these cookies today and got rid of them , but this did not speed things up or eliminate errors.

(1) my desktop configuration is ASUS motherboard P5KPL AM/PS, with pentium (R) dual core CPU 2.7 GHz, 320 GB hard disk, 1 GB DDR2 RAM and NVIDIA getForce 8400 GS. My question is when i tried putting a single 2 GB RAM, it was showing error and the system became unstable. What could be the reason?

View 45 Replies View RelatedSometimes when the computer has been running for a while, and especially when I am running a program which switches the screen resolution (so it would seem), the screen will suddenly go blank. Not just black blank either - the colour varies from a sludgy green to a sludgy red, but I've also seen white and black variations of the problem. I've also noticed that just before the login screen appears when I boot into XP, the screen goes to the sludgy red colour for about a second before it seems to recover. The computer does not freeze or become unresponsive - I can still shut down or restart manually using keyboard hotkeys - I just can't see anything other than a single screen of colour.
