As a windows 2000 user, I am pazzled by the fact that when I click on folders in Explorer Folder View this causes the directory to expand. In win2000 we normally need to double click, and I must say, I do like it that way.

When I double cliclk, it opens up the program twice more often than mot, also. I have the Folder options set up to double click so I don't know what's going on. View 7 Replies View RelatedEvery once in a while my pc acts really nutty. What happens is that I'll go to open a program (lets say Nero Burning Rom) and on a single double click Nero will open up 70+ times. Furthermore, it makes mostly all of my programs act up when this starts happening. For example, when I click the arrow in the system tray it expands and collapses tons of times before it stops. If I open Firefox my homepage sort of half loads over and over and won't stop. MSN Messenger opens up then freaks out when I put the pointer in its window (this happens in the above Firefox example too). All of this activity makes the pc unusable until it all stops. Speaking of when it stops, it does't stop with a restart, it just stops mid session. I thought it could be a mouse problem because the trackball I use is pretty ancient and I figured it just might have just petered out finally, but then I tried another mouse that I found laying around and it did the same things. One other thing I've noticed it (the trackball) doing is when it's not being used the pointer slowly crawls towards the top of the screen. I've run my anti-virus and all three of my spyware programs and none of them find anything out of the ordinary. So what could be causing this? I'm starting to think it might be my mouse port, but how would I find this out?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter reading through the posts, my problem seems so minor. But to me, it's extremely annoying!A search didn't list my problem. My folder setting (Open each folder in the same window) doesn't seem to work anymore. No matter how often I make the setting, clicking on a sub-folder opens that sub-folder in a new window. If I go back to the Folder Options window, it shows that the same window option has been chosen. I have no idea what I might have done to cause the changed behavior. And yes, in the View tab of Folder Options, I did choose Apply to all Folders.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI need to know if you can change the select time in single-click mode? Because as soon as my pointer moves over a file, it selects it. This is extremely irritating, when you only want to select certain files and then try to drag them to another window. Because as you move across the other files, they become selected also!! So, is there anyway to increase the amount of time that it takes for your pointer to select a file, because I hate double-click mode!

View 7 Replies View RelatedOn my D: drive, I have several folders (500 something I think) containing mp3s that I have ripped from my CD collection. What I want to do is transfer all the mp3s contained in these folders to My Music (I have just upgraded to Windows xp media center edition). Rather than going through each folder manually, and going through the time consuming process of selecting, copying and pasting every mp3 in each folder, is there any way I can select all of the mp3s in all of the folders automatically, and have them copied over?
View 5 Replies View RelatedNo matter what I do, when I change the properties of a single directory to either show or not show hidden files and folders, that property then changes in every single directory on the whole drive. I do not click on "Apply to All Folders", I just go to the directory of interest and change the button in Folder Options>View and press "OK". Is there a trick here? Basically I want some folders to show hidden folders, and others to not show them. Right now it's either all or nothing! Again, I am NOT pressing apply to all, which I know will apply all view settings to every folder.

Related / unrelated - I have seen CPU/memory max out as well - though not always. I have a 1.5 GB of RAM, and have seen this when not heck of a lot is going on. I am unsure if it is a virus issue or is it something that has to do with windows explorer issues, which I have seen a few threads on on the net.
While in Windows Explorer, if I happen to look in a folder that just contains an AVI file from my Canon S2 IS digital camera (don't even open the AVI file), DrWatson gives me a warning (can't remember the details) and then Windows Explorer hangs and have to do a CTRL-ALT-DEL to terminate W.E. and error report goes out to Microsoft. (no response of course) Happens every time.This does not happen on my notebook computer so there has to be a problem (conflict?) on this desktop.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have two machines that are slow to display the contents of drive C in Windows Explorer. It will take sometimes as much as 30 seconds.Once it has displayed the contents of drive C, I can close Windows Explorer and if I go back to it again soon, everything is as fast as I would expect it to be.
When I attempt to open a file or to get a directory listing in Windows explorer I have a delay of about 12 seconds. Before I get a listing (within a program) I see where it says at the top "Open - not responding". After eventually getting the listing I will be able to obtain another listing quite quickly while in that program. If I exit the program and go to another as from Word to Excel I again experience the slow listing and the "Open - not responding" before the listing shows. Long ago I had a similar problem where the listing took an even 30 seconds to appear and it was determined to be a virus. Nothing shows in any of my virus scans.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've literally just started having problems with my computer. Sporadically I have lost the ability to right-click, sometimes whenever I do so on either a folder or on an application, no little menu comes up
Also, when browsing through folders, the loading starts to become very slow and sometimes the blue menu at the side of the window isn't there at all. When I click on images to preview, or folders to open, sometimes nothing happens at all and the window just remains the same.
ALSO whilst trying to open some applications I get the error pop-up sound, but no error message box comes up to tell me what the error is. It just makes the noise, and I close the half-loaded application without it crashing (This happened with Photoshop, Adaware, Outlook Express, and once with Sonic RecordNow - all started loading, the error noise was heard, and the program left half loaded or missing parts) I've tried again and it seems it's all hit and miss like the other symptoms...sometimes i'll be able to right-click normally, sometimes i'll be able to browse files normally, sometimes programs will load, but the problem still (at random moments, it seems) arises again.
When Alt Ctrl Delete -ing, either nothing comes up and an error noise is heard, or the little window with the information does come up, but the desktop behind it flickers as if constantly reloading very fast.
The only error sound in which a box popped up, was one telling me "xvidcore.dll was not found". I clicked OK and everything reloaded as if windows explorer had crashed (the start bar, desktop etc).
I haven't done anything as of now, too scared to restart, or try and open any applications it might not like. I can't be exactly sure when I started to have problems, as I leave the computer on for days at a time sometimes (it's been running for about four days this time, about three days is normally the maximum) because I use BitTorrent a lot seeding and downloading.
When I right click a file, windows explorer crashes and then recovers.
Right clicking on a folder works OK.
My OS is Windows 2000 Professional.
When folders are double clicked, they are supposed to open. But mine don't! Just randomly one day they stopped openning. Instead they open the "search in folder" window. When I right click the folder, instead of Open being the top function, Search... is the top, so double clicking automatically performs this function. I'm assuming it thinks I want Search to be the default function.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.
When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.
I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions "explore" and "open" (bolded).
The only folder that seems unaffected by this problem is the "Documents" folder on the desktop, and any shortcuts that point to folders.
When i double click on a folder in say "my documents", a search window opens instead of opening an open window. If i right mouse click on a folder the word "Search" is shown at the top of the list in Bold instead of "Open". how can i fix this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedToday I had uninstalled several unused programs with the Add-Remove utility of Windows XP.Then I also unchecked a few services in the 'msconfig' (System Configuration Utility) and rebooted.Now, when I right-click on any folder or folder short-cut, the menu shows up only after waiting a full 3 minutes. The mouse cursor turns into the 'busy' indication and the system freezes during that time. The same scenario happens when I try to delete any folder (or folder-shortcut) using the 'Del' key on the keyboard. There is no such issue for any of the files.I would like to know what exactly is causing this problem and how it can be resolved. My PC is working fine now otherwise, and seems much faster than it was yesterday.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to open one of My Folders (One that I added to my desktop with application I added to it) with a double left click a search results window opens instead of the folder opening and displaying the contents of the folder with things I've put into it. If I right click on one of my folders and go down and left click on open the folder will open and the contents displayed as I expect (The first opetion displayed is a search after I right click). Any other folder including My Documnets folder will open the folder and display the contents correctly.At one time it used to work correcly and its not a major issue but I would sure like it fixed > Any ideas?

Everytime that I right-click any application, explorer shuts down. Leaving me to glare at my background in despair. I do'nt think it is a virus, as I have used countless anti-virus scaners on my computer and not a one of them has found any. I also tried to find the cause of this by looking in the event log, however nothing is mentioned in it.
I'm working on a computer for a client and have found it to be the most problem filled machine I have ever delt with. Spybot and ad-aware removed between the two of them over 1000 spyware files, I had to un install several bad programs, and stinger found 7 critical viruses. . It also will not connect to the Internet, it has been configured to the shop's network and I can ping other computers in the network no problem, I can even ping the gateway, but it cant connect to or ping any site beyond that...and finally, explorer restarts anytime you right click on a file on the desktop
I did manage to get highjackthis on to it and move the logfile to this computer on my USB drive and so here it is
I recently reloaded Windows XP (Home). Soon after I noticed there is no way to get on Internet Explorer. It's not listed in the programs or the start menu. It's not on the desktop.

I have a Dell 8200 desktop running XP service Pack 2. The problem I have is right clicking anything that is related to explorer.exe. I can right click icons on my desk top that are webpages, but not links to files on my computer. If I open a window, I cannot right click. I highlight an item and the busy hourglass spins around, then the window disappears. Can not delete items with out doing some work arounds. To delete, move or copy a file, I have to go into any program and say open file, then I can do what ever I want with it.
I have defragged, scanned for virus as well as adware and I am clean. Have even replaced the explorer.exe file. Had another tech try his darndest as well as other on-line Tech's. I have run a program called ShellExView and it comes up with an error in the following Extension Names. Channel, Channel Menu Handler Object, and Channel Shortcut. All are Channel Definition Viewer files.( cdfview.dll) All appear to be system types. Other Channel Definition Viewer fields seem to work just fine. (they include things such as icon handler, thumbnail, info tip handler etc. Not sure what to do with the information. I plan on getting a new computer soon, so do not want to have to reinstall Windows XP before then.
I had a problem crop up yesterday in which a folder in my documents (my documents few folder to be exact) has consistently started crashing explorer whenever I even go near the folder.If I go in to it, right click on it or even put my mouse on it explorer will crash, it has clips and pictures in it, mostly game or movie trailers, or little movie clips. If the problem cant get sorted out I would prefer the folder to be deleted.Ive asked at other places, and have seen someone else ask the same question (albeit without a resolutions) here so I'm not walking in blind.I've tried various programs including unlocker, killbox, moveonboot which all crash when attempting to delete.Spyware and virus programs crash when scanning the folder.
