somehow the default setting when i double click a file folder changed from "open" to "search". in my efforts to solve the problem i created a shortcut that does not work and i can't get rid of it because the "remove" option is greyed out in the "edit file type" window.

View 5 Replies View RelatedToday I had uninstalled several unused programs with the Add-Remove utility of Windows XP.Then I also unchecked a few services in the 'msconfig' (System Configuration Utility) and rebooted.Now, when I right-click on any folder or folder short-cut, the menu shows up only after waiting a full 3 minutes. The mouse cursor turns into the 'busy' indication and the system freezes during that time. The same scenario happens when I try to delete any folder (or folder-shortcut) using the 'Del' key on the keyboard. There is no such issue for any of the files.I would like to know what exactly is causing this problem and how it can be resolved. My PC is working fine now otherwise, and seems much faster than it was yesterday.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem with file associations in that the options in Folder Options/File Types are grayed out. These are the New, Delete, Change and Advanced buttons. I noticed that I had a problem with my associations when my computer stopped keeping the changes I made using the Open With/Choose Program method. I installed Foobar2000 media player today and when I tried to associate media files within the configuration preferences I get the error message "An error occurred while changing file type associations. If you are using a limited account, please contact your system administrator.

I have a folder with files I am keeping, copying it from computer to computer when I change computers. In this folder I am unable to see folder/file names unless I mark them. This has irritated me to some extent since there are around 12-13000 files in this folder by now. I have asked around at computer-tech stores, and some of my more or less nerdy friends. One of wich is mostly always able to help me but not with this.

It's done this before and I've always let it with no problem.I fired up my computer yesterday and discovered that all my e-mail folders, all received and sent messages have disappeared.I thought my wife may have accidentally erased the files so I checked the Recycle Bin. View 2 Replies View RelatedI recorded a move off of television onto a dvd, and now I want to edit out the commercials and burn a new copy for myself. What is some good software to do this with? I have Adobe Premiere 6.0, but I cannot seem to get that to work with this dvd. I was able to decrypt it to my hard drive. I am very familiar with DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, but they are not for this type of editing,apparently.With DVD Shrink,all I can do is cut the beginning and the end credits etc. Is there something like DVD Shrink, but better, that lets you cut out the commercials and then encode it and burn it?

But this is very cumbersome. Is there an easier way? I had to eliminate all restore points which were also infected. Now I need to change or delete a line in my config files. I keep getting a message that windows internet explorer can't find a file which was the virus file(///c:windows/privacy_danger/index.htm'. make sure the path or internet address is correct). I also get a different display background screen which I can't change. All else seems to be working properly.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe windows Explorer search feature works well enough for most file searches except when looking for files on a disc. On those occasions, the In Folder results point not to the disc drive but to c:documents & settings[name]Local Settings Applications Data. In short, not to where the files are. To add insult to fubar, clicking on any folder in the list results in -- absolutely nothing because I am clicking on a phantom folder (duh). I know that if I scroll across to the right, miles outside the screen view, I'll finally see where the file in question actually resides -- major and unappreciated pain. Is there a config or reg edit somewhere that will allow me to set the In Folder to show the file where it actually is, referencing the disc drive, instead of the above c:. If not, at the very least, I think Microsoft should share some of what the Einstein was smoking the day he came up with this one.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI've literally just started having problems with my computer. Sporadically I have lost the ability to right-click, sometimes whenever I do so on either a folder or on an application, no little menu comes up
Also, when browsing through folders, the loading starts to become very slow and sometimes the blue menu at the side of the window isn't there at all. When I click on images to preview, or folders to open, sometimes nothing happens at all and the window just remains the same.
ALSO whilst trying to open some applications I get the error pop-up sound, but no error message box comes up to tell me what the error is. It just makes the noise, and I close the half-loaded application without it crashing (This happened with Photoshop, Adaware, Outlook Express, and once with Sonic RecordNow - all started loading, the error noise was heard, and the program left half loaded or missing parts) I've tried again and it seems it's all hit and miss like the other symptoms...sometimes i'll be able to right-click normally, sometimes i'll be able to browse files normally, sometimes programs will load, but the problem still (at random moments, it seems) arises again.
When Alt Ctrl Delete -ing, either nothing comes up and an error noise is heard, or the little window with the information does come up, but the desktop behind it flickers as if constantly reloading very fast.
The only error sound in which a box popped up, was one telling me "xvidcore.dll was not found". I clicked OK and everything reloaded as if windows explorer had crashed (the start bar, desktop etc).
I haven't done anything as of now, too scared to restart, or try and open any applications it might not like. I can't be exactly sure when I started to have problems, as I leave the computer on for days at a time sometimes (it's been running for about four days this time, about three days is normally the maximum) because I use BitTorrent a lot seeding and downloading.
