View 4 RepliesToday I had uninstalled several unused programs with the Add-Remove utility of Windows XP.Then I also unchecked a few services in the 'msconfig' (System Configuration Utility) and rebooted. Now, when I right-click on any folder or folder short-cut, the menu shows up only after waiting a full 3 minutes. The mouse cursor turns into the 'busy' indication and the system freezes during that time. The same scenario happens when I try to delete any folder (or folder-shortcut) using the 'Del' key on the keyboard. There is no such issue for any of the files.I would like to know what exactly is causing this problem and how it can be resolved. My PC is working fine now otherwise, and seems much faster than it was yesterday.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to remove a few right click functions that have added them selfs to my menu. I have managed to remove all but a few. These only occur when i right click a folder (i got rid of the ones for files).
View 5 Replies View Relatedsomehow the default setting when i double click a file folder changed from "open" to "search". in my efforts to solve the problem i created a shortcut that does not work and i can't get rid of it because the "remove" option is greyed out in the "edit file type" window.
View 3 Replies View RelatedBecause of the way I work, my XP NTFS system has a very large number of shortcuts. (I really need a semantic network file system.)
Lately I've noticed some peculiar performance delays. The Favorites view, for example, has many shortcuts in it. They can take up to a minute to resolve fully into folders, until then they display a generic IE icon.
I'll start with a bit of background so everyone doesn't suggest the usual tips for speeding up the start menu.I'm logged in as administrator and running XP and have had problems with the start menu - all programs list being stupidly slow to populate for a while, and no performance issues anywhere else. I've tried all the usual removing shadows, fade and slide; unchecking auto search for network folders and printers; fiddling with the menu order in the registry and checking there are no false entries, etc, etc, but with no joy.I then noticed in C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorStart MenuProgramsAccessories there are two invalid links to 'Tour Windows XP' and 'Windows Explorer', and whenever I get anywhere near this folder everything slows up, which suggests to me these are the problem (although I could be wrong).
When I try to delete these shortcuts I get 'Cannot delete Tour Windows XP: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)'. The location both shortcuts are pointing to is C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorStart MenuProgramsAccessories - so are these just pointing to themselves?I then went on to check C:Documents and SettingsDefault UserStart MenuProgramsAccessories and found both these shortcuts exist there as well, and are valid working shortcuts. Easy I thought, I can just copy these over to replace the invalid shortcuts and everything's fixed - but it asks me if I want to replace the existing file, and then says 'Cannot move Tour Windows XP: A file with the same name already exists. Specify a different name.'So I appear to be stuck with two invalid shortcuts in my menu that drive the processor mad anytime I go near them, and I can't delete, rename or point them at something else.
How do I create network shortcuts in My Network Places? There are several computers on my network and on them, specific specific drives and specific folders that I use frequently. I'd like them to show up on all the computers, but I don't know how to create them? A second, related question, can I safely delete shortcuts that appear there that I don't use?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a way to create click-able Icons/shortcuts for various keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+..., etc.).
[My mouse is very acessable, but my keyboard is not. I know about various on-screen keyboards; but I would prefer clickable Icons that I could put in my quick launch toolbar, for example.]
Is this possible to do within XP, or with some program I can install

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows XP Pro (SP2). Well when i right click on a file , it takes 5 -10 seconds for the right click menu to appear. Apprantly the problem only persists when i am connected to network. When i unplug the network wire it becomes fine. Using shellview i tried disabling non microsoft context menu options but it didnt work. When network is enabled right click or double click on a file is very slow. Else it is normal.
View 5 Replies View RelatedRecently whenever i right click on anything or anywhere on my computer, be it the desktop or an avi file etc, the list that should normally open instantly, takes a long time to open - this can vary from only a few seconds to 10+ seconds.Once i have waited for the menu to open however and click off it, the next time i right click on the same point it opens instantly. I presume this is because it has cached the menu or something.Ive had a look around the internet.
View 14 Replies View RelatedFor some reason whenever I right click a first time after I start windows or have been doing something else it is sooooo slow (ie 10-20 seconds for menu to pop up) and the same goes for opening up some other menus. Does anyone know what could be causing this and how I could fix this? PS running Windows Defender and Symantec Antivirus which I assume might be causing the issues if you know how to adjust it to better my performance that would be awesome.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy parents have a gateway home computer upgraded to Vista with SP1. Yesterday, my dad downloaded jzip and winrar and a free video editing software from AVS, I believe it is AVS 4 Editor. Soon after that whenever I did a right click, the response seemed to lag and slow to come up. Any selection I clicked from the right click selection would seem to hang there on the screen even though the computer processed it. It goes away after I right click again but not select. It only happens when I right click on the desktop, start menu, taskbar. When I right click in my browser firefox, it is alright. I unistalled AVS4 but the problem persists. All my programs are running fine. The rick click slowness is just nagging.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an extremely slow response when I open up "My Computer". The same things happens when I try and type in a web address, very slow repsonse. All of the other progams on my computer work properly. I have ran several anti-virus and spyware programs, and they all came back clean.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a computer that quits explorer every time I try to click on the file menu, or right click on explorer and go to the new link. It also does this when i try to delete a folder in explorer or through my computer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I open a folder (MyComputer, for example), and try to right-click or double-click an icon to open it- it does not work. When I right-click the icon, NOTHING happens. When I double-click the icon, the icon gets highlighted, but the program or other folder does not open. I checked in the folder options, and it is set up so that when you double-click an icon, it opens the program. But the weird thing about it is that if I try to double-click or right-click an icon on my desktop.. it works like it should. So this really just doesn't make sense.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMany times when I single click on an item with my mouse, whether it be a program, a shortcut, or whatever, more often than not , it acts as a double click. When I double cliclk, it opens up the program twice more often than mot, also. I have the Folder options set up to double click so I don't know what's going on. I regularly run AdAdware, Spybot, and I have ZoneAlarm Suite running all the time
View 7 Replies View Relatedwhen I browse "My Network Places", the browsing is so incredibly slow. It takes a long while when you click one icon in the “My Network Places” for that to open up and go to the next directory or when just first displaying the computers in “My Network Places”, it goes so slow.
I use Windows Workgroup on the LAN to share out internet. Everything else, other than browsing the network, works great. The internet browses nice and fast.
This morning I opened My Network Places while my pc was still loading all the programs at start-up and "My Network Places" was fast. After a few minutes it was back to normal low pace. Now I guess it is something running on my pc slowing it down. Is it maybe to do with XP Service Pack 2? Before installing SP2 the network browsing on my pc is fast, after installing SP2, it is slow. Other computers on the network without SP2 browse the network quite fast.
All the pc's on the network has XP Pro.
i have windows xp and i can't click or right click on any icon's on desktop.

I am delighted to say that there were none but I noticed that the box for repairing shortcuts was not ticked. View 4 Replies View RelatedI normally save my documents to a folder nested deep down in My Documents folder.
The shortcuts in the My Places bar are convenient but they could be be more convenient if I could replace one or more of them with a folder that I choose.
