If you right click on the desktop you get the options, new as well as shortcuts to certain programs. How do I add other programs to the list of shortcuts & delete those that won't be used?
Without going through regedit, is there a way to add a network drive or some other shortcut on the left pane of the open/save dialog box? See the red circled area in the image below. I'm using WinXP SP4 with Windowblinds installed. What about rearranging the order the icons already appear?
I have created a VB script to delete specific short cuts in the All Users profile. I have encountered a problem where some user have created there own short cuts and these objects don't exist under the usual All users profile path. Instead they are within that users profile and I am trying to modify my VB script to delete the short cut paths regardless of the profile they exist in is this possible?
i dont know if its just me (probably) but i find it hard to find threads i have posted from 4 to 5 days ago...if i do a search on my name, not all my threads come up! this means i have to go through the whole list page by page (or is there a better way) i used to have a microsoft word option available when i right click and went "new" now its gone...
I have outlook in a shortcut on my start menu. I only have to click it once, and it runs. What is the difference between it and other shortcuts that must be launched with two clicks? Can I make an arbitrary shortcut launch with a single click?
Experiencing extreme slowness when right click shortcuts for deleting, renaming or looking at properties in Windows XP. Is this a known problem? Is there a way to fix or improve this?
I want to remove a few right click functions that have added them selfs to my menu. I have managed to remove all but a few. These only occur when i right click a folder (i got rid of the ones for files).
somehow the default setting when i double click a file folder changed from "open" to "search". in my efforts to solve the problem i created a shortcut that does not work and i can't get rid of it because the "remove" option is greyed out in the "edit file type" window.
Today I had uninstalled several unused programs with the Add-Remove utility of Windows XP.Then I also unchecked a few services in the 'msconfig' (System Configuration Utility) and rebooted. Now, when I right-click on any folder or folder short-cut, the menu shows up only after waiting a full 3 minutes. The mouse cursor turns into the 'busy' indication and the system freezes during that time. The same scenario happens when I try to delete any folder (or folder-shortcut) using the 'Del' key on the keyboard. There is no such issue for any of the files.I would like to know what exactly is causing this problem and how it can be resolved. My PC is working fine now otherwise, and seems much faster than it was yesterday.
As the title states, whenever I right click on a file, beit on the desktop or in a folder somewhere, it can take anywhere between 10 and 20 seconds before I can click on "Delete" or "Rename". When I try clicking on one of the two, my CD drive (or hard drive?) starts spinning and it won't let me click on my desired action until it's up to its "cruising speed" in RPM.
How do I create network shortcuts in My Network Places? There are several computers on my network and on them, specific specific drives and specific folders that I use frequently. I'd like them to show up on all the computers, but I don't know how to create them? A second, related question, can I safely delete shortcuts that appear there that I don't use?
I'm looking for a way to create click-able Icons/shortcuts for various keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+..., etc.). [My mouse is very acessable, but my keyboard is not. I know about various on-screen keyboards; but I would prefer clickable Icons that I could put in my quick launch toolbar, for example.]
Is this possible to do within XP, or with some program I can install
my windows is acting like it has no registry i can't access system restore, reg edit, etc. or and has icons only on the shortcuts which are defult like computer network bin etc. The files eg word doc or a pdf can been seen with the appropriate program. I can work programs like normal as i am using firefox, IE ain't working but i can acces computer which is IE . gets the following error message when she tries to open Outlook Express: Error Deleting File or Folder Cannot delete ntuser.dat: It is being used by another person or program Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.
I would like to delete a folder without deleting its contents. Copy, Paste and then deleting the folder with its' contents etc can work. But is there any way of getting it as a windows context menu? ie right-clicking and selecting delete folder but not contents.
I have a computer that quits explorer every time I try to click on the file menu, or right click on explorer and go to the new link. It also does this when i try to delete a folder in explorer or through my computer.
When I open a folder (MyComputer, for example), and try to right-click or double-click an icon to open it- it does not work. When I right-click the icon, NOTHING happens. When I double-click the icon, the icon gets highlighted, but the program or other folder does not open. I checked in the folder options, and it is set up so that when you double-click an icon, it opens the program. But the weird thing about it is that if I try to double-click or right-click an icon on my desktop.. it works like it should. So this really just doesn't make sense.
Many times when I single click on an item with my mouse, whether it be a program, a shortcut, or whatever, more often than not , it acts as a double click. When I double cliclk, it opens up the program twice more often than mot, also. I have the Folder options set up to double click so I don't know what's going on. I regularly run AdAdware, Spybot, and I have ZoneAlarm Suite running all the time
I add a Favorite to IE. It's OK to add a new Favorite Folder, but when press final enter, it hangs IE for ages, the hard drive goes bananas, and FINALLY it comes back to life, entered. I do have a lot of favorites. Is there a Tweak for this?
I was thinking of adding a second HD to my pc for working with Video and Picture editing programs only. I know I would have to format the new HD but do I also have to install WIN xp on it as well?
Windows XP has only three color schemes to choose from. I wondered if there was a way to add new color schemes (and for that matter, a place to specifically find new color schemes) without installing software like Style XP or WindowBlinds. I just want to configure the color scheme, not everything else. Can this be done?
I need some help. I have a Compaq Presario 715us laptop that I just added 256mb of ram.Since then the laptop freezes and the only way to get it back is to hold the power button. It will run from between five minutes and four hours before it freezes. If I remove the new Compaq ram all is well. It is the correct ram per Compaq. I've run looping diags on the ram and they all pass. I've spent hours on the phone with the clueless folks at Compaq. I've called Kingston to see if they know of a problem, and they didn't. There are no logs associated. I've changed hard drives and reloaded xp with all the updates but it still locks up.I searched the web and found tons of posts on the HP busines forum site of people with many models of Compaq laptops freezing after adding ram. They used all different ram other than Compaq's. They were from three years ago. They found that if they removed xp patch Q811493 in sp1 it corrected the problem. They said that this patch was rolled into KB826939. I've searched for both of these on my laptop and found neither. I've checked add remove programs with show update checked and it isn't there. It may be in SP2 or it may not be related to this issue in my case.
When i right click on an image file(jpeg) and choose properties..is it possible to add properties like height and width, and in megapixel perhaps?aside from the default: location, and size.
On my taskbar, just to the right of the green start button I have two icons (IE and Outlook) and I used to have an icon for the desktop. Somehow the desktop icon (which would minimize all open programs and show the desktop) has disapeared. Does anyone know how to add it back to the task bar?
I have a Dell Dimension 8300 desktop with 80GB hard drive and 3 GB RAM. Dell do told me I can have only a total of 120GB hard drive on my machine. Dell forum said that is not right. The Dell manual states there is are 2 bays for 1" high hard drives and it gives installation directions for adding a second internal drive. I have 3 external hard drives for backups, photos and much of what I don't need or want on the C drive. I need to install more programs for photography since they can not be run from an external drive according to those I have asked.
I have 1 memory slot left in my motherbaord and it supports a maximum of 1GB in that slot - I have used the previous 2 with 1GB in each channel running as dual channel memory.
Can Windows XP MCE 2005 work with more than 2GB of memory? I heard that XP with more than 2GB of memory is like Me with more than 512MB. Under Me when I used more than 512MB RAM (768MB) it worked but after performing intensive tasks I has incredibly slow performance to the point where the system almost grinded to a halt!! I wouldnt even dare make full use of the 1GB as I saw articles on MS website saying that 1GB will cause 9x OS's to completely not start at all!! Oh and lets not forget the glorious BSOD - those bring back some memories!
Once I upgraded to XP the 768MB of RAM worked fine. Then went onto 1GB and then afterwards a nice comfy 2GB.
Simply put, if I have 3GB of RAM, will I experience slowdowns or lockups in XP MCE 2005 much like I did in Me, when I had 768MB of RAM? Is 2GB of RAM the "ceiling" in XP MCE 2005 for good reliable performance.
I understand that this is a widows update client running process, but I have 18 of them running in my task manager!!!I can't browse the Internet or open applications (MS Word, Windows Media Player, etc.)and I can't access its files on my network. It tries to run the app when you select it, but then itquickly goes away. Seems like over time the wuauclt's keep adding on in the task manager, like it's trying to update but can't.All my computer can really do is open task manager and get into control panel.
I read somewhere that after adding RAM you also need to adjust the Paging File. I just found an informative article on this. I checked my Page File properties and it reads: C Drive (that's the only drive, no partition) Custom Size: Initial: 336 MB Maximum: 672 MB I have 990 MB RAM, hence the recommended 1485 MB (1.5 times)Should I increase the Page File size? I don't have a problem with performance, but I also haven't used any memory intensive programs. Also, is there a risk in allowing the system to set Page File? "System managed size"?And why some people recommend the same size for minimum and maximum?
I am trying to figure out how to add changing content to my background. I decided to use the Web option in the customize desktop area of the display settings. I made two test attempts trying different things out to see if it would do what I wanted. I had no trouble and so I went ahead and made my image. Now when I went to add the actual image in it let me, but wouldn't save the changes after I logged off. It works fine while I am still logged in, but as soon as I log off my changes are gone. So I thought that maybe there was a limit on how many items I could have in the list at any given time. I had no need for my test objects, so I deleted them from the display control panel. Now for the surprise - Those changes don't save either. After I log off the test objects are restored. I now thought that maybe it was some kind of safety feature so you don't remove it by mistake. I went through and found where the registry keys for it were located and deleted all of them. This only effected my current session - After I logged off, the test ones are put back and my actual one is removed, from both the control panel and the registry.
