I have two machines that are slow to display the contents of drive C in Windows Explorer. It will take sometimes as much as 30 seconds.Once it has displayed the contents of drive C, I can close Windows Explorer and if I go back to it again soon, everything is as fast as I would expect it to be.
When I attempt to open a file or to get a directory listing in Windows explorer I have a delay of about 12 seconds. Before I get a listing (within a program) I see where it says at the top "Open - not responding". After eventually getting the listing I will be able to obtain another listing quite quickly while in that program. If I exit the program and go to another as from Word to Excel I again experience the slow listing and the "Open - not responding" before the listing shows. Long ago I had a similar problem where the listing took an even 30 seconds to appear and it was determined to be a virus. Nothing shows in any of my virus scans.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I attempt to open a microsoft word doc (or excel) from windows explorer it takes apx. 30 seconds to open ..but if I open the program first , then click on the open icon it comes up instantly.Also movie files from cd take apx 30 seconds to a minute to open even if I have media player already open.This never happened on my old computer ..This new computer is a Gateway purchased in May 2005..I already tried removing unused programs and defragmenting.

1) I am running Windows XP Home Edition on a fairly new Dell Dimension 8300 series with a Pentium 3 processor and 1 Gig of Ram. I have 100 gig hard drive of which about 50 gigs are full of all types of files, avi, mpeg, jpeg, audio files, program files, you name it!
2) I have downloaded all of the latest Windows XP updates.
3) My computer starts fine and opens to the standard desktop fairly easily and quickly.
3) I then click on explorer.exe icon on my desk top and Window Explorer opens.
i just bought this new computer for 1 of the staff and i have configured his profile. but then i tried to browse the internet and found it very slow, not in opening the IE, but in loading the pages. it takes around 20 to 30 seconds to load a page. when i use ping to check the connectivity, it takes a long time to display the first line, but it gives me a 1ms when pinging the server, which is good.
now i login with the administrator account and find the internet browsing is fast, but again the ping takes a while to display the first line. i did give that user Administrator permissions and tried again, but it's the same issue. i thought it would be higher permissions which could affect the user. So, i added the user to "domain admins", "administrators" groups, and i tried again, but the same situation
Over the last few months, the Windows Explorer on my laptop has become excruciatingly slow.Simply trying to move to an adjacent directory can take minutes.
Related / unrelated - I have seen CPU/memory max out as well - though not always. I have a 1.5 GB of RAM, and have seen this when not heck of a lot is going on. I am unsure if it is a virus issue or is it something that has to do with windows explorer issues, which I have seen a few threads on on the net.
I am operating XP media edition, Dell dimension E510, I have installed and uninstalled and installed Live messenger again and it loads very slowly and then won't respond to the mouse, acually locks up. Is there some patch or driver I am missing?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a pen4 computer with 1 GB of memory and lots of free space on the hard drive. when I click or try to open explorer or Firefox, it just sets there for sometimes 4 or 5 minutes and then it opens. I have a cable modem with other computer on it and none of them have problems.
When I click on the Icon, the hour glass comes up for a few seconds and then goes away, there does not seem to be any activity on the HD and then it all opens and works fine until it is closed again...
Every thing runs pretty slow, Firefox takes 5+ seconds to switch tabs, Thunderbird takes almost that long to open messages, Gaim's buddy list scrolling is extremely slow, Paint Shop Pro/Gimp/Photoshop filters take almost double the time they do on my other weaker IBM (see computer specs). It's just terribly slow.

View 6 Replies View RelatedA week ago my pc simply stopped responding while running, and before that moment, there was no indication that anything was wrong. CAD did not respond so the pc was turned off manually and rebooted. It would not load at all. After a few attempts I was finally able to get it to come up in safe mode and attempted a chkdsk which found some errors, then ran chkdsk /f and /r and was finally able to boot up the computer, but the process takes literally 15 minutes.
I've been trying the different troubleshooting suggestions I found at: "10 Things You Can Do When Windows XP Won't Boot Up". I tried bootcfg /rebuild but was scared off of that when prompted to answer some questions after the initial command. I also tried fixmbr DeviceHardDisk0 but came to a point that I received a message saying that "an invalid or nonstandard partition table signature was detected. If you are not having problems accessing your drives, you should not continue. Writing a new master boot record to your system partition could damage your partition tables and cause your partitions to become inaccessible" which also scared me off so I didn't continue.........
I have just installed a server with MS Windows 2003 server sp2, it is running a domain. When I try to log into the domain on the server from a work station, it takes about 30 to 60 seconds before the desktop comes up. Now I have another network with this same setup and logging in takes seconds.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI did a systeme restore, after it finished and restarted it came back to my explorer (desktop) and nothing loaded. I ctrl+alt+deleted and some things where running in the background.I "hard" restarted my computer and it still took me back to the blank explorer (desktop).I ran a new task and opened up firefox, when it poped up my desktop poped up and everthing in the task manager loaded but was very slow and nothing worked and it just froze. I then tried a different restore point and the same problem countinued.I then put in the windows repair disk and tried to fix the boot and still nothing. If I turn on the computer and put it into safe mode the desk top will load. But in normal mode it wont for a very long time and when it does it doesnt work.

In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI know I am behind the times, but I just now upgraded from SP1 to SP2 due to some of the anti-virus and firewall software upgrades only being compatible with SP2. SP1 ran great. After upgrading, tweaking the services, and a few other things my computer is still lagging. It takes 4 times longer to boot up w/SP2 and even after that is slow to respond for at least 5 minutes. I have always tweaked my pcs to boot faster and not have unnecessary things running. I've done everything I did in the past and still SP2 is slow.This basically sucks. It would be so great if MS didn't have a monopoly on OS's.I have a couple of older pcs that I run a couple versions of Linux on and they run fast and flawless
View 7 Replies View RelatedSystem recently began taking a long time to load, and to execute commands.. Also some unusual responses. Slow to load browsers. Whether I.E., Chrome or Firefox. When logged onto the internet, responses, page changes and other commands are very fast, and links connect with very little delay. The problem is with trying to start up and log on, and do other work on the system. Sloooow. Also I have Skype 4.0 installed, and wanted to Uninstall it in order to add the latest Skype. However when I try to uninstall via Add/Remove in Control Panel I get an Error message " Network Error occurred while trying to read file C:\WindowsinstallerSkype.msi" I get this even if I try to install the new Skype over the old (4.0). What seems to be the problem?

If I open excel from the desktop, it opens immediately. Also, if I click on start/programs and then right click on one, it takes 20-30 seconds to get the properties screen to pop open.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhile in Windows Explorer, if I happen to look in a folder that just contains an AVI file from my Canon S2 IS digital camera (don't even open the AVI file), DrWatson gives me a warning (can't remember the details) and then Windows Explorer hangs and have to do a CTRL-ALT-DEL to terminate W.E. and error report goes out to Microsoft. (no response of course) Happens every time.This does not happen on my notebook computer so there has to be a problem (conflict?) on this desktop.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'd appreciate some help with this and have seen similar threads, but am just not competent to sort this out on my own.Windows Explorer is no longer reading my camera card. It either fails to respond or just loads the thumbnail icon and then seems to stop, although a couple of times I left it for around 30minutes and most of the 70 thumbnails had opened, so I'm not completely sure if it's stopped or if it's just so slow the computer thinks it's not working.It will open them once they are in a folder on the PC and I can transfer them using the Nikon software otherwise I'd have a useless camera!I'm also getting quite a few "Internet Explorer is not responding messages", and after downloading version 8 went back to version 7 but it's still happening.
I have just reinstalled XP, and just installed SP2 for the first time, now the one glaring thing I have noticed immediately was my browser has slowed to an almost crawl. While sometimes, not often, the pages will load quickly, they usually take at least 10-15 secs, normally pages drop quite fast 2-4 secs for most as a guesstimate.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI log into my account, windows loads up and during start up, explorer.exe just crashes, it completly removes itself from the task manager every 20 seconds, desktop icons then dissapear with only the wallpaper/background showing. This is a real problem, I've used Spy Doctor and Kaspersky, it found a few malware and trojans and my system appears to be clean however my explorer.exe continues to crash every 20 seconds, forcing me to launch programs through task manager in order for me to function on the Computer. I've read up this problem throughout google and tried some of the advice thats been given to others with a similar problem as the one im facing with however it still crashes.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a slow start-up problem, which never used to be a problem. I am running Windows XP SP2. When I startup or restart, the screen goes to black for a few seconds before going to the Log On Page. Once it goes to the log on page, I click my user name. It then takes anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes to load to the state of use. Within one minute from clicking my username, I am brought to Windows Screen, but my background and my icons do not load for another 2 or 3 minutes. During this time period, if I scroll over Start or any other command buttons, my mouse turns into the hour glass. I am receiving no error messages, and once my computer loads completely it seems to be working fine. Though, I think it is running slower than normal in general.
