It takes about 15 seconds for me to open a folder in XP Pro SP2. This is on a fast machine. It used to take a second. I've wracked my brains trying to think of what I did to cause this, but I can't think of a thing. Maybe an automatic update?

Every time I try to open a file (whether it be an .mp3 or .txt or whatever) my computer pauses for about 7 seconds and then opens the file. I know it's not a problem with a specific program because it happens to virtually all the files on my computer.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI log into my account, windows loads up and during start up, explorer.exe just crashes, it completly removes itself from the task manager every 20 seconds, desktop icons then dissapear with only the wallpaper/background showing. This is a real problem, I've used Spy Doctor and Kaspersky, it found a few malware and trojans and my system appears to be clean however my explorer.exe continues to crash every 20 seconds, forcing me to launch programs through task manager in order for me to function on the Computer. I've read up this problem throughout google and tried some of the advice thats been given to others with a similar problem as the one im facing with however it still crashes.

It will take sometimes as much as 30 seconds.Once it has displayed the contents of drive C, I can close Windows Explorer and if I go back to it again soon, everything is as fast as I would expect it to be.
every time i try to open anything that uses these programs i get a 'windows/internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close' crash i think i have a virus in my processes i have 2 strange ones one is n6tgoxae.exe the other is 86851316.exe norton fixes this is for a short while but then the problem soon returns i have also tried spybot search and destroy as well as running AdAware can anyone help me on how to fix my explorer problems and gettin rid of

When I attempt to open a file or to get a directory listing in Windows explorer I have a delay of about 12 seconds. Before I get a listing (within a program) I see where it says at the top "Open - not responding". After eventually getting the listing I will be able to obtain another listing quite quickly while in that program. If I exit the program and go to another as from Word to Excel I again experience the slow listing and the "Open - not responding" before the listing shows. Long ago I had a similar problem where the listing took an even 30 seconds to appear and it was determined to be a virus. Nothing shows in any of my virus scans.

Now whenever I try to start Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer the windows installer starts and the windows will not open until I have cancelled the installer several times. For Example, I have .avi file called A B C; the explorer closes whenever file A is in the folder. When it's out of the folder, the explorer works just fine without closing. I use Matroska pack codec, is this the problem? I remember on the error message says something about the codec is not compatible?
When I try to open a folder of a program it doesn't work. I click the folder and the mouse changes to the mouse and hourglass picture but nothing happens after that. Sometimes I get that error sound but no message pops up. Then the title on the title bar of my applications goes blank and I no longer can click the menu that says file, edit, view,It highlights it but it won't let me click it. I also cannot right click anymore and when I try to reset my computer, it highlights it but I can't click that either.I also can't open the task manager when it happens nor can I type in my address bar or open a new tab for my browser.. I tried running a virus scan but it catch anything so I have no idea what I can do. I've tried system restore but that didn't fix it.

I went to the control panel, folder options and set the radio button to open multiple folder windows. It will not do it. I can only open one folder view at a time. What am I doing wrong? Now when I start up the Works word processor and I use the "Open" function, it always opens in "My Documents". When I use "WordPad" it opens in the last folder used. Is there a way to make the Works word processor act like this? If not, is there a way to change the default opening folder? (Also is there a way to change the default location where a file is saved?)
Also, since this is closely related, I'll ask this: When you use the Open function in the Works wp, you get the "Open" dialog box. At the bottom there is a drop down box called, "Files of type". It always opens with "Works Document (*.wps). If you click the drop down box, one of the options is "All Files (*.*). Is there a way to change it to this?
hi, since today when i use explorer on my second partition it takes a few seconds to open root folders. hdd gets noisy, grinding for a while, explorer process reaches 90 ish % and then it opens a folder. i must add that all other folders open properly. the other issue accompanying it is jerky sound when playing audio or video files located even on another hdd. this is quite a fresh installation of win xp pro. no viruses detected, no bad sectors, defragmented, etc. this is a sata hdd, connecting it to another controler did not help as well. it seems to me like the problem could be physical rather than software. what do you think ?

So whenever I open a video file a small window pops up titled Windows Explorer stating that "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the Inconvenience." When I close that the window from which I opened the video file closes. However the video file stays open and I can watch it just fine. But other times it will also close the video file too.

When I sign onto the internet via NetZero, their start page opens up sometimes, but usually it doesn't. If it does open, it takes a long time to load and I really can't do anything on that page anyway. I've been having this problem for about 2 weeks now, so over this time I've tried doing restore operation, using several different dates, but nothing has helped. I thought about reinstalling IE6, but that looks to be a problem since IE7 beta is the latest thing, plus I don't know if I might mess up something within XP anyway.
View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently my computer has been opening certain files that are double-clicked very very slowly--2 - 3 minutes, thats right minutes! If I open the file by launching the application then open the file via the Open menu item, all works as expected.I did some investigation and found that this happened to certain file types that were double-clicked from the desktop or from email attachments. This behavior happens from Excel, Word, Project, Access or Internet Explorer shortcuts that are in emails. PowerPoint, Infopath, Publisher and Visio all open normally (2-3 seconds).
Digging further showed that each of the file types that takes minutes to open all have something in the DDE Message field of the Entering Action for Type (File Explorer window, Tools, Folder Options, Select "Doc" file type, Select Advanced, Highlight Open, Select Edit). The file types that open normally don't have anything in this field. This is why I think the behavior is related to DDE.I have tried the "Detect and Repair" option of Office for my troubled apps but this does not have any effect on the problem. I have also tried using msconfig to do a Diagnostic Startup and it have no effect on the problem.
This is probably an easy question to answer but for the life of me I cannot find the setting anywhere to fix it. The question is - Whenever I connect my IPOD to my Windows XP machice, Windows opens a WIndows Explorer window with the contents of the attached drive (IPOD). How do I stop this from happening? Like I said, it is probably a basic setting or regisry change but I can't seem to locate it?

It doesn't take more than a second or two to close the window but I find it frustrating that I am unable to prevent it from happening.
