Every time I try to open a file (whether it be an .mp3 or .txt or whatever) my computer pauses for about 7 seconds and then opens the file. I know it's not a problem with a specific program because it happens to virtually all the files on my computer.

But after all the files are selected I want to del them or copy them or whatever... so I right click my mouse to get to the 'right click menu' but at this point there is a LONG pause. This seems to happen randomly in spurts, like some days it's really bad and other days the problem doesn't occur. However, something related happens frequently in games, where I might press a key to go forward and it'll register as being continually pressed until I press the key once again. Specific keys don't do this, it seems like all of them do!

I turned it back on and when it got to the desktop, no task bar items started, and all of the .ink shortcuts on my desktop wouldn't display icons, just the broken icon icon, if you know what I mean. View 2 Replies View RelatedIn XP, as far as I know, the system has to restart in order to allow chkdsk to work on the drive. Well, it takes a while and I miss the messages at the end of the test. I have no idea whether it corrected anything or whether everything turned up fine.How can I have it wait for me to view the results? Or where can I find the results at?Is there a way to run chkdsk in XP without rebooting? What happens if I attempt this in safe mode?

I need someone to please explain to me how to fix this problem because I just have absolutely no clue how to even start. So whenever I open a video file a small window pops up titled Windows Explorer stating that "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the Inconvenience." When I close that the window from which I opened the video file closes. However the video file stays open and I can watch it just fine. But other times it will also close the video file too.
View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently my computer has been opening certain files that are double-clicked very very slowly--2 - 3 minutes, thats right minutes! If I open the file by launching the application then open the file via the Open menu item, all works as expected.I did some investigation and found that this happened to certain file types that were double-clicked from the desktop or from email attachments. This behavior happens from Excel, Word, Project, Access or Internet Explorer shortcuts that are in emails. PowerPoint, Infopath, Publisher and Visio all open normally (2-3 seconds).
Digging further showed that each of the file types that takes minutes to open all have something in the DDE Message field of the Entering Action for Type (File Explorer window, Tools, Folder Options, Select "Doc" file type, Select Advanced, Highlight Open, Select Edit). The file types that open normally don't have anything in this field. This is why I think the behavior is related to DDE.I have tried the "Detect and Repair" option of Office for my troubled apps but this does not have any effect on the problem. I have also tried using msconfig to do a Diagnostic Startup and it have no effect on the problem.
Every once in a while when viewing an HTML email or some web pages, upon accessing the page the program (IE or Outlook 2003) will pause while there is vigorous access of the hard disk for 5 to 10 seconds, then the HTML file will be displayed. It is as if the computer is loading a viewer or pagefile or something.

The problem I'm having is when I double click on any MS office file (powerpoint, word, excel, etc), it takes about 1-3 minutes to open. When I look at the task manager, the CPU is 99% idle and no task appears to be using many resources. It's not the anti-virus SW because I've removed it from the system and still have this problem. It's also not network related because I've removed it from all networks and still have the problem. If I open the program that the file is associated with (ie MS word for a *.doc file) and then select file/open, it opens fine. I don't think it's just a MS office problem, because the same thing occurs when I try to click on a weblink within a document or application. It takes 1-3 minutes for IE explorer to open and go to the web page. I think it may be due to some security patch, but I don't know which one.

It doesn't take more than a second or two to close the window but I find it frustrating that I am unable to prevent it from happening. I suspect that the answer lies somewhere in the Register but I have no idea where.

View 3 Replies View Relatedwhen running chkdsk /f at command prompt in windows, i get the message about drive being in use, would you like to run chkdsk after next restart. I choose yes and restart the computer. But, after chkdsk runs, I dont have time to read the results as it quickly continues to load the OS when it is finished. Chkdsk (without /f) in cmd in windows tells me there is a problem with my file system although I do not have any bad sectors. I have run chkdsk /f (after restart) twice and it still has not fixed whatever the error is.

I noticed it in a game (Vampire bloodlines) But it does it also when i am at the desktop. It is accompanied by a slight crackle from the speakers. I updated and reistalled my soundcard Drivers. Updated My Vid card drivers. Ran Spybot and adaware, And even used norton system works. I have no idea what is causing this but i cant play games because its like Lag in a multiplayer game! It is consistent as if it is polling for something. Even the hard drive crunching stops for that second. I have tried installling all MS updates but it did not help.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI log into my account, windows loads up and during start up, explorer.exe just crashes, it completly removes itself from the task manager every 20 seconds, desktop icons then dissapear with only the wallpaper/background showing. This is a real problem, I've used Spy Doctor and Kaspersky, it found a few malware and trojans and my system appears to be clean however my explorer.exe continues to crash every 20 seconds, forcing me to launch programs through task manager in order for me to function on the Computer. I've read up this problem throughout google and tried some of the advice thats been given to others with a similar problem as the one im facing with however it still crashes.
