View 3 RepliesRecently the computer has been trying to access my floppy drive both on boot up and when I shut down. There is no disk in the drive. The computer also gives no errors. It never used to do that. My concern is that something is set up incorrectly, in addition to it being annoying.I am contemplating formatting my HD and starting from scratch. But before I do any ideas what could be causing this?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been able to write text files to my CD-RW until recently which may be after I received and automatic update from XP. I am using the MS CD Writer, I receive the error "There is no disc in the drive" when selecting properties is shows that the Discs have no free space, these are all brand new out of the package discs. I had this problem previously immediately after I upgraded to XP SP2, MS provided an executable that I ran and corrected the problem.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI cannot access files on the CD-ROM drive of my laptop. it's a combined cd/dvd, and it reads dvd's fine, runs programs from cd's, but when i go to windows explorer and try to open individual files, like word documents, powerpoint presentations, etc, it does not work. if i double click on the drive, nothing happens. if i right click on it and click open, nothing happens. i know it's not an issue with the CD, because I put the same CD into my other computer, and it reads it fine. And get this, the icing on the cake: I have a network set up, and when i make my cd rom drive sharable, my other computer can access the files on it. So my desktop can read the files fine from the shared cd rom drive in my laptop. but my laptop can't read it's own cd rom drive.HP support are dumbfounded, they say they have never heard of such a thing, and recommend that i reinstall windows xp.

View 13 Replies View Relatedafter reading ms + others I have a couple questions the insert disk can only be a floppy? that can't be right todays pc's only have cd or dvd or possible usb any way to write the backup .bkf file to a dvd instead of some hd other than the c drive? the writeup talks about formatting the entire c drive before the new windows install, is it not possible to just just reinstall windows, in the old windows folder, leaving the drive intact, so you still have documents and settings, program files, etc, so that when the asr restores the os image, all the old programs etc are still there ready to run?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI had two computers -- one was a Windows 98 and the other an XP. I had four files on my 98 that I wanted to keep before I got rid of it, so I saved the files onto a floppy (the internet wasn't working on the 98). I have an XP that has a floppy drive, so I thought it would be fine. Some of the four files are rtf (WordPad) or doc. When I inserted the floppy, "A:" showed up, and the first two files transferred over to my desktop fine. As for the last two, when I double-click or try to open it in a window comes up, a different message pops up each time. One time it said, "The disk in drive A is not formatted. Would you like to format it now?" When I tried to open one of the rtf files in WordPad, it said that it couldn't open Word 6.0 files.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently reformatted my computer, but before doing so moved all my documents to my "D" partition so I could easily bring them back after the reformat. I am using Windows XP Professional Sp3. One of the files I saved was encrypted in windows xp (the file's title has a green font color indicates it is encrypted). When I try to open it it just says 'access denied'. I tried opening it on Administrator account and that also didn't work. I am using the same windows account name and my computer name is identical to the way it was before the reformat. When I right click the file, go to properties, advanced, details.. it shows:
"Users who can transparently access this file: Me@my-desktop (some certificate thumbprint in hex here) That user name "me" and the computer name "my-desktop" are identical to the user name and computer name I have on the computer now.
I have just got a pc with 2 dvd drives and a floppy drive, I'me not very clued up on media I think the top drive which is d:drive is a dvd rom which I think only plays dvd and cd's. The other drive while I know it is a dvd drive and I am thinking that this will be a burner drive. When I go to my computer I can only see the d:drive a:drive and c:drive should'ent there be an e:drive here as well: When I try to burn something using nero or roxio I am asked to put a disk in the d:drive should'ent this be the e:drive as thats what I think is the burning drive

Access my external drive, the floppy does a disc check for several seconds, right click explore a partition or folder and frequently yhe same thing happens. Put in audio cd to auto run, first the floppy has to do its chugga bugga chugga sound then the cd plays. Started over a week ago, or about when I formatted a floppy to make new Partition Magic emerg. discs. I rememeber something like this on a Win98SE machine a very long time ago. Recently I have not been able to access my hard drive(s) from My Computer. I double click on one of my partitions and the computer does nothing. It doesn't open the drive in order to see the files!! It even doesn't work when I plug in my external USB drive either. It sounds like a windows problem to me. However I can access any disk that I want if I type the corresponding address in the address bar.Do I need to reinstall a driver/services or even XP ?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just did a clean install of Windows XP Pro with SP2. Everything seems to work fine but i wanted to make a bootup disk with a floppy. I inserted a new one into A: drive which is the floppy drive but the 'Insert Disk' window keeps popping up. I tried to format the disks but it's as though it doesn't recognize the disks. I checked the drivers and it says there's no conflicts. I used to have Win 2000 Pro and it recognized my floppy without any problems. Could the problem be my BIOS or WIN XP?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy floppy (A: drive) runs intermittently when my PC is on. Here is what I have come up with so far. This started after I reformatted and reinstalled XP Pro. During the reinstallation I did not use the floppy for anything so it is not hanging and waiting for a file. I have checked my registry for any reference to the floppy. I have uninstalled NAV and MS Office and it still happens. I have not made any changes in my BIOS. It boots into the hard drive first. I have cleaned out the recent documents file area. I have checked my startup folder. Sometime it will access the drive while surfing in IE and clicking to another web page. Just clicking the "My Computer" icon will make it run. I have Googled and tried everything I can find and the problem persist. Any thoughts? Thanks

How does one go about accomplishing this? I've been looking around and found how to run it on the C-drive, is it any different for the A-drive?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought a new Dell Dimension 2400 about a year ago. It runs Windows XP Home. I don't remember all of my specs (I'm at work), but here is my problem.
First, booting up takes a long...time. When I finally log in, I get an error message: HP AiO Device Object failed: hRes = 0x800706BAThe RPC Server is unavailable.Maximum retry attempts exceeded.I click ok and it brings up my desktop, but originally would not bring up my Start button and taskbar. After messing with it all day yesterday, I finally got a taskbar, but not my usual one. I can open some programs, but can't save any files to floppy or CD. Everything is very slow...and I do mean very! Most of the time the Task Manager will show "Not Responding", sometimes it will eventually start running again and sometimes I just have to "End Process".
I have no idea what may have caused this problem, but recently, whenever I try to open a .msi installer file, I get an access is denied message. This happened a couple of weeks ago, and I left it alone. Now, I just discovered that when I open a .msc file (like services.msc), I get the same result. I went back to that same installer and the same thing still happened. And right now, I just recalled that the same thing happened with .log files. I just tried to open one and it wouldn't let me. Anyone have any idea what caused this or why it is happening? I couldn't find any help on Google or on previous posts.

When it asks to press F6 to install the third party drivers will I be able to load off the motherboard driver cd, or does it *have* to be a floppy.? Reason is the folder that contains the driver info on the cd is over 6mb so obviously won't fit on a floppy..and I'm not sure which I need to complete the install. If I habe the driver cd in the second cd drive will I be able to browse to it when asked? Failing that, just what info do I need to put on a floppy?
