Crashed Computer / Access Denied

Jun 25, 2005

My computer crashed and I rebuilt the machine using the old HD (with XP installed) as a second HD. I wanted to move Pics, music etc onto the new HD and then wipe it clean. I was able to move anything that was in a shared folder and anything in Program Files. Anytime I tried to move any file under a user password protected , I was denied access. I tried to reboot the computer using the 2nd HD. I got to a window that had the option of Safe Mode or last known good config. Neither of these would load Windows. I then tried to boot with my Windows XP disc. I entered the area for repair Windows, but have no idea what the Administrative Password is. I tried every combination I could think of. Last night a friend tried to move the files with DOS without success.

Crashed - Salvage Attempt Being Hindered By Access Denied Windows

Jul 28, 2005

I had a system crash after installing drivers for a d-link wireless card (PCI). In the system that the crash occured on I had 2 Harddrives: one Maxtor SATA 200GB, and one Maxtor IDE 160GB. I used the 200GB for windows and my documents, and I used the 160GB for PS2 game backup ISO's and media files. The crash involved a BSOD when trying to load windows, and it reset many of my BIOS settings. It also corrupted my 200GB hard drive, but did'nt harm the 160GB one. I have since changed back the BIOS settings, and I installed XP onto the 160GB hard drive, in order to salvage the damaged one. at first the damaged one wouldnt open saying "Drive G is corrupt and unreadable". I then ran chkdsk and it fixed tons of errors so that I can now browse the HDD, but it still wont boot windows off of it, giving me another BSOD.

What I really need is the files in the "My Documents" folder on my 200GB HDD, the one that was corrupted and repaired. HERE IS THE PROBLEM: I had the folder made private on my old windows installation, and not password protected. when I try to get in now I get "access denied" errors because of that. I NEED to get in there in order to take the important stuff out and put it on the 160GB hard drive. afterwards I will go about trying to fix the windows installation on that drive. I appreciate all of your help ahead of time, but I do ask one thing: please don't give me help with the crash, restoring windows, or those issues, I will deal with them myself, all I need is a way to get into a private folder on one hard drive that doesnt have windows, from another hard drive that does.

ICANNOT ACCESS ENCRYPTED FILES - Access Denied

Jun 1, 2007

I did a terrible mistake today. Typically I install XP in C drive and keep My Documents folder in D drive. All of my hard disk drives (except the linux partitions) are NTFS. I encrypted the My Documents folder and all of its files and subfolders.Today I reinstalled XP in the C drive, after a quick format on it. I was unaware of the fact that what might be happened to My Documents folder. Now I can only view the files and folders inside My Documents folder. Neither I open any file, nor I decrypt those files. Windows is saying access denied.

Access Denied For Range Of Files

Feb 2, 2005

job search and financial files from '99 that were moved via floppy disk, tape, CD, or e-mail from old NT 4.0 to newer NT 4.0 box and then to current W2K box. On latter two boxes these files produced 'access restricted' errors and were inaccessible. I've kept them in hopes of someday being able to reaccess the data. These file types include doc, txt, html, MS Money data, and possibly another one or two. In other words, file type is not the issue. I was on the old boxes and am on the W2K box THE administrator, and taking ownership, changing permissions for folder and file, and still cannot access them. The current drive and previous drive were both NTFS, but I may have had a problem on a FAT drive also.

User Access Denied To All Exe Files And Programs

Aug 18, 2007

Hopefully I can explain my situation without dragging it out to long, but it is involved. The problem is with my wife computer which is an Emachine, Model T3265, running Win XP, Home Edition and IE 7.0.The last time my wife was on the computer was the evening of Aug 14, at which time she had been playing the card game Spider Solitaire. I am also listed as a user but only to keep it running for my wife. When she tried to use the computer the next day, Aug 15 she kept getting the message Windows can not access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item.Having come up with the same results as my wife, here is what I have been able to determine.

Be it from the Start Menu, Desk Top or Program Folder, the end result is the above .message. .It didn't matter whose account I was in, mine or my wife, or if I tried to open an executable file or program directly or with a shortcut, the results were the same. However I did find a couple of things that were quite odd. The items stored in the task bar at the bottom right side of the task bar could be opened, but only from here..These programs consisted of the Virus Program, Trend Microsoft Pecillin, messenger program and the like. I also found that if I opened Documents and Settings and then opened either my wife or my personal folder and then went to Favorites I was able to access the internet. I could not do is run Restore from system tools and when I tried use the run function in the start menu I got a pop up window which said Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want a shortcut placed on the desktop.Short of doing a full format and re-installation can you tell me what has happened and how to fix it?

I am trying to get those users file/folders off the hard disk by connecting it up as a slave. I can see the contents of the disk fine but get 'Access Denied' (as you would do) when trying to access that particualr user profiles.Tried running recovery console, windows install repair, but think its messed up completed, I can however browse the disk from another PC, hence my question - BTW can't take ownership of file as PC I am trying from is not a member of a domain (although I could maybe try on one - would this work?)

We have one computer we use as a file share (W2K) and no servers and this seems to work well for us at the present time. As the administrator I'd like to be able to run scripts that will give me status on processes running on the remote computers. In particular, we are using Microsoft Backup to do our daily incremental backups for our one shared application. If a user remains logged into the app during the night the backup won't recover the open files.

Computer Crashed / Missing Critical Files

Dec 30, 2007

Whenever I try to start it up, I get an error (before the XP logo and the progress bar) that says that Windows cannot find certain files. I have tried safe mode, last known good configuration, etc. Nothing works.I tried booting from a KNOPPIX Linux Live CD, but for some reason it refuses to boot.I have Win XP Home (preinstalled) on this computer, but it also has a recovery partition (which will erase all my files if I use it - this is a last resort only) and a Win XP Pro upgrade CD.

First of all, how can I get KNOPPIX to run correctly? If I can get it to work, I can get the files I need and do a wipe and reinstall of Windows (which would fix a LOT of things).

Second, if that doesn't work, can I use the XP Pro upgrade CD to get the system back up enough to get the files?Third, if that fails, how can I partition my hard drive and install Linux, then access the Windows partition and save the files I want?

Try Secondary Computer To Contact First / Access Denied Window

Nov 5, 2006

I had an IP address conflict and that is resolved now that I added a router (Linksys WRT54G). I am trying to reconnect my old hardwired network (which consists of only two computers) using the router (the wireless is for the future system). I can do everything on the main computer -connect to internet, and ping the other computer. I can also ping the main one from the second one once all the firewalls are down.I ran the Windows XP network wizard, saved the "disc", ran it on the other computer. The problem is when I try the secondary computer to contact the first (which has shared files and the internet connection) I get an access denied window. Both have the same Group name. The second computer has all the shared folders listed from the main computer but maybe that is from the original pre-router setup.

No matter how many times I run the wizard I do not see the other (2nd) computer listed on the "my network places" on the main computer. All I see is the the router and an MSN link (if I click on the router it sends me to the router setting on Linksys) How can I fix this and add the second computer? Thanks - hopefully you'll get back to me before I pull all of my hair out! Also, I tried the "add a network place wizard". The drop down menu lists the folder I want to add "\LOUISSharedDocs". When I tried that, or the IP address of the computer it says "folders not valid". I double checked on the second computer the names as above and that is how they are.
