Jul 18, 2009

Using XP sp2, trying to clear out some useless files on an external drive, no matter how many files I deleted it didn't make much change in space recovered then I checked the size of Windows Live One backup file,50 gig,(wow) that's 60% of the total drive space, while trying to delete it,I get the message "cannot delete DO_NOT_DELETE.mediaID: access denied" Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that file is not currently in use.

Sharing Files Results In Access Denied?

Jul 25, 2005

I have Xp pro workstation that i set up as a server to share files and folders. I grant specific users both the shared permissions and advanced permissions. they can see the folder and access the folders. but they cannot modify them. It says "access denied". I verified that the permissions were not propogating from the parent folder also. Everything that i see says it should work, but it doesnt. iThe only thing i got to work was giving the user full rights to the above folder..which is for all to share but not to modify.

Secure Site Access Denied - Restoring System Negative Results

Jun 10, 2005

Running XP on a Sony PVC-RX770 (3 years old). I can never get to a secure site. Message says to re-set security levels which I have done over and over. I have tried restoring system to earlier times with negative results. Sony did not help. I can't even load Norton, buy things, see my bank statements, etc. Here may be a clue. I am sometimes told my system won't accept ActiveX code. I am also told I need to add a drive. I press continue and system runs OK (except the the security problem).

Denial Of Access To Aspnet.net For Deletion After Update

Oct 25, 2009

A thread that may have addressed this problem with an update to XP professional has unfortunately closed so I have to ask it about it again. I have automatic update selected and on one occasion when shutting down, the system went into update mode. After two hours it was still chuntering away so I rebooted. Next I find 80 folders on my C-drive with long alpha-numeric names containg a mixture of Word and other files. They seem to have something to do with the Microsoft update. When I try to delete them I get a message denying me access to aspnet.msp and saying this file, and consequently none of the other newly-arrived folders, can be deleted. I tried a systm restore by that failed. I tried a restart in safe mode but access to deletion was still denied. I eventually installed the latest .Net Frame 3.5(?) but these files are still there. I would be grateful for advice or how to remove these folders and files.

ICANNOT ACCESS ENCRYPTED FILES - Access Denied

Jun 1, 2007

I did a terrible mistake today. Typically I install XP in C drive and keep My Documents folder in D drive. All of my hard disk drives (except the linux partitions) are NTFS. I encrypted the My Documents folder and all of its files and subfolders.Today I reinstalled XP in the C drive, after a quick format on it. I was unaware of the fact that what might be happened to My Documents folder. Now I can only view the files and folders inside My Documents folder. Neither I open any file, nor I decrypt those files. Windows is saying access denied.

I just get an empty IE window with nothing there and source code is empty too so it's not getting out though the IE shortcut to yahoo does function properly but that is also the home page for this puter.Got DSl hooked up too so I haven't figured if that may have some influence on this issue. I called them, they know nothing about it so in the mean time I'm saving addies in notepad.

Web Shortcuts On Desktop Do Not Work

Aug 19, 2005

I am an older "newbie" and find some issues considerably frustrating. I am running Windows XP Pro on a Compaq laptop. I have installed all Windows XP and IE service pack updates and try to keep my McAfee virus checker and firewall up to date.I have a number of desktop shortcuts pointing to web pages that up until a few days ago worked fine with IE. When I booted up the other day, none of the shortcuts worked. In researching my problem on the Microsoft site I tumbled to this resource. So as not to waste your time, I have been through most if not all of the threads dealing with shortcuts and tried every recommended action before I posted my problem. I have also reinstalled IE from the XP disk, but the shortcuts still do not work. I have not reinstalled XP Pro.

Grouping Desktop Shortcuts

Apr 10, 2005

Perhaps this already exists in some powertoy (if so let me know so I can get it), but I want to group similar/related desktop shortcuts into catagories (example) all dvd related apps into one group on the desktop that would STAY IN PROXIMITY TO EACH OTHER IN A GROUP. I do not want to simply create a new folder for the desktop as you can not see the individual programs without double clicking on the folder first. What I want is essentially program groups like in windows 3.1 but where you could see the actual icons for the individual apps.If anyone knows, please let me know, if anywone wants to write it, let me know.

Cant Access Folder - Access Denied

Apr 11, 2006

Files on my second hard drive were shared on the network (level 4, Network users could only read) and primary hard drive was reformatted and Windows XP sp2 was installed.(without the files being unshared) Now when trying to access the files the error "Access Denied" occurs and I cant access or delete the files (would really like to recover the data about four years worth of work taking up about 75% of the hard drive)

I am the Admin, and I can't change any of the folders propertys as I again get the "access denied" error. I've been looking everywhere for a solution to this, this is what I found from MS help (not very helpfull)
A file's permission may differ from the containing folder if one of the following conditions is true:

Desktop Disappeared / No Icons There Except Shortcuts

May 29, 2007

I went to log in the other day, using normal login and password.upon completing log-in process, I noticed my desktop looked completely different than normal (we normally stash dozens of icons right on desktop for quick access) - there were no icons there except for a couple standard shortcuts..Fearing all was lost, I quickly checked hard drive and saw that all our files were still there and functional (even in the desktop folder), but for some reason the desktop was not loading.Tried to open Outlook Express to check mail and could not access mail files or the internet It seems even though I used my normal login info, I was logged in as a different user and I suspect that's why desktop wasn't loading and I couldn't access email....I checked Documents and Settings - there is a new user folder (appeared out of nowhere as far as I can tell) with syntax of mynormalusername.L600-myfirstname.
