I have Xp pro workstation that i set up as a server to share files and folders. I grant specific users both the shared permissions and advanced permissions. they can see the folder and access the folders. but they cannot modify them. It says "access denied". I verified that the permissions were not propogating from the parent folder also. Everything that i see says it should work, but it doesnt. iThe only thing i got to work was giving the user full rights to the above folder..which is for all to share but not to modify.
I have set up an XP-Pro classic-file-sharing network and want the client computers to share folders on the "server" computer . I have arranged a number groups and placed users into the groups. Each user is a member of GROUP_nnn and also of USER(group). I have shared c:SHARED_ROOT to allow all groups to have full-control on SHARED_ROOT, but for some reason access is denied to the sub-folders SUBF_A , SUBF_B and SUBF_C. As ADMIN, I have set the permissions to allow each user full-control in these sub-folders but I still get "access is denied" when a user tries to navigate into one of the sub folders. I removed INHERIT from the SHARED_ROOT and from each of the sub-folders.
Do I have to "share" the subfolders? Should I allow INHERIT on the subfolders?
I am trying to move files from my old XP computer (to be called OLD from now on) to my new Vista computer (to be called NEW) over my network. In some folders, there are some files that don't have the correct permissions for me to move them. I get this message on NEW when I try to copy them over: Destination Folder Access Denied You need permission to perform this action
The folder that these files are in on OLD has the correct permissions set, but for some reason some, not all, of the files within it have not inherited the correct permissions level. I can't figure out how to change the permissions level of these individual files. When I right-click on the problematic files in OLD, I do not see a Security tab.
Running XP on a Sony PVC-RX770 (3 years old). I can never get to a secure site. Message says to re-set security levels which I have done over and over. I have tried restoring system to earlier times with negative results. Sony did not help. I can't even load Norton, buy things, see my bank statements, etc. Here may be a clue. I am sometimes told my system won't accept ActiveX code. I am also told I need to add a drive. I press continue and system runs OK (except the the security problem).
i just installed acrobat 5 full version and am trying to delete the desktop shortcut. Everytime i try it itells me "Cannot delete Adobe Acrobat 5.0: Access is denied. The source file may be in use." I have tried restarting and that didnt help i have gone into the processes and stopped all that were allowed still with no luck. I am running win 2K prof and am only a power user on this machine as it is at work any ideas would be great.
When I try to use the control panel, I get an error message access to the specific devise path or file is denied. Some items work, but I get the same message when I try to run spybot, adaware, or when I try to manually load norton.
I did a terrible mistake today. Typically I install XP in C drive and keep My Documents folder in D drive. All of my hard disk drives (except the linux partitions) are NTFS. I encrypted the My Documents folder and all of its files and subfolders.Today I reinstalled XP in the C drive, after a quick format on it. I was unaware of the fact that what might be happened to My Documents folder. Now I can only view the files and folders inside My Documents folder. Neither I open any file, nor I decrypt those files. Windows is saying access denied.
job search and financial files from '99 that were moved via floppy disk, tape, CD, or e-mail from old NT 4.0 to newer NT 4.0 box and then to current W2K box. On latter two boxes these files produced 'access restricted' errors and were inaccessible. I've kept them in hopes of someday being able to reaccess the data. These file types include doc, txt, html, MS Money data, and possibly another one or two. In other words, file type is not the issue. I was on the old boxes and am on the W2K box THE administrator, and taking ownership, changing permissions for folder and file, and still cannot access them. The current drive and previous drive were both NTFS, but I may have had a problem on a FAT drive also.
I am still having problems with my Windows Installer!! I clicked on start then control panel>then clicked on Administrative tools>then component services> then i clicked on Services(Local) then i scrolled down the list to Windows Installer, where it says status, it is blank. It doesn't say stopped or started so i clicked on start the service and i got an error 5 message; Could not start the Windows Installer, access is denied. I seem to be getting the same error message for some of the other services too. Here is a list of all the services that stopped, maybe someone out there can look at these and maybe help me out here: Application Management, Indexing Service, COM +System Application, Logical Disk Manager Ad
every time I move files they become access denied, I am the sole user & adminstrator, each time I have had to start in safe mode & regain ownership. I have resorted to doing copy file & then deleting original.
For some reason i cannot delete any file or folder within C:Program Files. I get the error message: access denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected.I have XP home edition with a 3 partitioned hard drive. C:for Operating system, E:for software install and F: for data. The only software installed on C: partition is Kaspersky Anti-virus.I have booted up in safe mode to delete files but i do not want to do this all the time. I have also tried changing folder permissions and apparently i am logged with admin rights.
My old HDD was dying and has a S.M.A.R.T. error (although it will still boot and run it is getting slow). So I bought a new drive, slammed it in the case and decided to do a nice clean reinstall (XP Home with all the SP2 and updates available).I left the old drive in the bay and was hoping to copy across any odd file However I get a lot of "Access is Denied" messages when trying to view/read/change attributes on files/folders especially in Documents & Settings.
Hopefully I can explain my situation without dragging it out to long, but it is involved. The problem is with my wife computer which is an Emachine, Model T3265, running Win XP, Home Edition and IE 7.0.The last time my wife was on the computer was the evening of Aug 14, at which time she had been playing the card game Spider Solitaire. I am also listed as a user but only to keep it running for my wife. When she tried to use the computer the next day, Aug 15 she kept getting the message Windows can not access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item.Having come up with the same results as my wife, here is what I have been able to determine.
Be it from the Start Menu, Desk Top or Program Folder, the end result is the above .message. .It didn't matter whose account I was in, mine or my wife, or if I tried to open an executable file or program directly or with a shortcut, the results were the same. However I did find a couple of things that were quite odd. The items stored in the task bar at the bottom right side of the task bar could be opened, but only from here..These programs consisted of the Virus Program, Trend Microsoft Pecillin, messenger program and the like. I also found that if I opened Documents and Settings and then opened either my wife or my personal folder and then went to Favorites I was able to access the internet. I could not do is run Restore from system tools and when I tried use the run function in the start menu I got a pop up window which said Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want a shortcut placed on the desktop.Short of doing a full format and re-installation can you tell me what has happened and how to fix it?
Not sure if im in the right forum here. I have saved some files and backed up my e mails to an external hard drive as i formatted and re installed a copy of windows xp. When i try to access the files on my external hard drive, i get a message that access is denied.
I restored a backup of the "documents and settings" to a new install of XP but when I try to access the primary (preffered customer folder I get C:Documents And SettingsPreffered Customer is not accessible. Access is denied'. This folder originally asked for a password, which was blank (ie. hit enter).
When I try to access program files, install a program, or anything else along those lines, I get a simple message:"C:/Program Files is not Accessible. Access Denied."Nothing more. No error, no details on how to undo this denial of access. I have windows XP, and I can find no way to correct it
When I try to open Program Files, I get an error message saying C:Program Files is not accessible. Access Is Denied. This occurs on 4 out of the 5 user accounts on our computer, and on the 4 it occurs on, most programs are not usable.
I have a few folders in my 2nd partition giving me this error "folder is not accessible, access is denied." They contain 3 very large 3-4gb files that were working right before I tried to organize them and move them to a different directory (cut and paste). I've tried disabling the simple file sharing and gaining access to them again, but it won't work.
I've got a machine running Win XP Home SP 2. Ther is a folder containing files in the Program Files folder that I want to delete. When I attempt to delete any of them, either to the recycle bin not, I get an error "Access Denied - ...". I am the computer administrator. The only help I could find on Microsoft site tells me to have the administrator change my privileges or the permissions on the files. Well, since I am the administrator, it seems like I should be able to do it myself.
There is a file on my network, which is in a public share, which is no longer needed. Everytime i try and remove it it says access denied, make sure disk isnt full (?) or somebody else is using the file. Its been like this for about 4 days and it keeps flagging errors in the backup.
I can't get into any off my program files. I am using Windows XP home edition on my HP computer. every time I try to get into any of the files and control panel, I get this message that won't allow me access.Message is as follows: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Option control panel.
one my user profiles was set to 'Keep files Private' in XP Pro SP2 (workgroup, not domain). The windows installation has gone pear shaped. I am trying to get those users file/folders off the hard disk by connecting it up as a slave. I can see the contents of the disk fine but get 'Access Denied' (as you would do) when trying to access that particualr user profiles.Tried running recovery console, windows install repair, but think its messed up completed, I can however browse the disk from another PC, hence my question - BTW can't take ownership of file as PC I am trying from is not a member of a domain (although I could maybe try on one - would this work?)
one of my computers crashed, but the main harddrive could be saved.I installed the harddrive into a different computer where it is now a slave drive.before the computer crashed i had a file on the desktop where i placed alot of large files. now, when i try to access documents and settings from the new computer the folder that is the username that would contain the desktop files, i get the error message access denied, not accessable.i can access the desktop files for "all users", and another user folder i created for a friend of mine. but i cannot access the desktop files that i created for my user account. i am certain that the file that contains the files i want is on the desktop.
I have two machines on my home net and both run XP-Pro.Problem 1 is that I have something like 30k files in the recyclers on my D Drive that I can't delete.Problem 2 is that I recently did a restore from a backup and even though user names, admin access etc are same I can't access open or even delete many of the unused folders. I have tried moving them to shared files folder, and using my admin privilege to take ownership and or change attributes but nothing so far works. Safe boot, safeboot command prompt all nada. can any one help me out here ?
This is only on files on Acer (as far as I know) = Computer #1 where all data is stored for the three computers on a peer to peer network. All are Windows XP SP2 fully updated. But Computer #1 is Media Center Edition. Neither computer is password protected. When move PICTURES I then cannot view, move, copy or delete them. When moved/copied from camera, they are OK until I move them again. (Probably the same for non picture files.)When open a file from one computer on network, often cannot open it from a different computer - either way.
i get "access denied" when i try to open any encrypted files created before the restart and incomplete system restore.xp has created or recreated my admin account with the same name/password (new valid from date). is this why i can't access the files now?under encrypted file/properties/advanced/details/add option xp reports "CA Root certificate not trusted, install in Trusted Root Certification Authorities". is this a related problem?
My other computer is a hp using windows xp. The computer lost power and now program files will let me access any file in that folder, either through explorer or through any program that is in that folder. The computer is not connected to the internet and never has been. The computer is only used for backup of photos and backup files. Virus scan comes up with nothing. I tried the whole folder options thing.. no luck. When you check the properties of that folder, there nothing showing. Shows 0 mb in folder.
I have two computers, on one computer there is a irrepairable version of windows, and I still had some files I wanted to save. So I bought a hard drive enclosure so I could transfer the files onto my laptop, the one I'm using right now. However I used to have a password for my account, and my files were marked private. Now when I try to go into those files, it says 'Access Denied' I was wondering if there was anyway to go around this obstacle, those files are needed.
I have 3 PCs at my home (call them A, B & C). A is running XP Pro SP2 on an NTFS disk. B & C are running XP Home SP2. All can see each other fine thru our wifi network and all can get onto the internet fine thru our DSL router (NAT). On A, simple file sharing is turned OFF. I've got a folder on A that I want B to have access to, but not C. On B there is a user called Mary. I tried reproducing Mary's user account onto A (same name, password, account type). Then I went to the folder on A and set the permissions so only Mary could access the folder. Then I went to B, logged in as Mary and tried to access the folder on A but it said "permission denied".
How do I set permissions on a folder on A using XP Pro SP2 so that a user on B can access the folder on A, but not any users on C? In the series of permission screens, I tried to locate B & C, but it was only showing me A. How do I get B & C to appear so I can select a user on B as having access rights to the folder on A? From A permissions locations, I tried typing in \Busername , but no luck.
I'm helping a friend whose system went belly up after a power failure. Besides telling him to get a surge protector, we are going to reload Windows and everything else. I pulled his hard drive and put it in an external enclosure so that we can collect his data files on another system. When I try to copy his files Windows tells me "access denied". What do I need to do to have access to copy these files?
