Trying To Go To Control Panel Results In "Access Denied" Message?
Jan 31, 2005
When I try to use the control panel, I get an error message access to the specific devise path or file is denied. Some items work, but I get the same message when I try to run spybot, adaware, or when I try to manually load norton.
I have Xp pro workstation that i set up as a server to share files and folders. I grant specific users both the shared permissions and advanced permissions. they can see the folder and access the folders. but they cannot modify them. It says "access denied". I verified that the permissions were not propogating from the parent folder also. Everything that i see says it should work, but it doesnt. iThe only thing i got to work was giving the user full rights to the above folder..which is for all to share but not to modify.
For the past month I have been getting the following error message when clicking the control panel button: Registry error - the system cannot find the file specified. I then click ok and I move directly to the control panel.
I keep getting what I believe is a fake windows security alert, which reads: Warning! Potential Spyware Operation! Your computer is making unauthorized copies of your system and Internet files. I cannot access Control Panel. Cannot print and the computer does not recognize me as the administrator.
Running XP on a Sony PVC-RX770 (3 years old). I can never get to a secure site. Message says to re-set security levels which I have done over and over. I have tried restoring system to earlier times with negative results. Sony did not help. I can't even load Norton, buy things, see my bank statements, etc. Here may be a clue. I am sometimes told my system won't accept ActiveX code. I am also told I need to add a drive. I press continue and system runs OK (except the the security problem).
i have a 8 month old computer with 512Mb RAM 3Ghz intel P4 processer and a 160Gb hard drive. basically i think there are missing system files because my computer has slowed right down when opening folders / applications and i cannot access the control panel (it says windows explorer has had to close). i run the free AVG virus scanner, Zone Alarm firewall and the AOL spyware protection.

Using XP sp2, trying to clear out some useless files on an external drive, no matter how many files I deleted it didn't make much change in space recovered then I checked the size of Windows Live One backup file,50 gig,(wow) that's 60% of the total drive space, while trying to delete it,I get the message "cannot delete DO_NOT_DELETE.mediaID: access denied" Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that file is not currently in use.
I've seen similar recent threads opened detailing similar problems you've looked into. My control panel icon has vanished from my start menu, the link to it in My Computer has gone too and when I try to access it via the Run function using control.exe I am greeted with the message of "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer, please contact your administrator".I'm sure this is a malware problem I've picked up off the web but I've got no idea of how to fix the problem. Your help would be very gratefully received.
I have some cd's which I cannot access on my XP system. When I try to read one of the CDs, but there is a message stating "SONIC DLA - your version of DLA can read files on this disc but you will not be able to edit or add to them". When I try to accessing the other CD, there is an error message stating "d: is not accessible. access is denied". I did try to install UDF Reader, but I still couldn't access the CDs.
Long story short here. Running Windows XP Home Edition. Previously had Microsoft Plus! Superpack for Windows XP installed (Movie Maker2 etc.) AND SP2. Everything worked fine. Then victimized by tons of spyware/adware that required I do a complete system restore. Totally fine now. In trying recently to reinstall the Plus! software, I was prompted to download Movie Maker2 from the MS site. Then discovered that to do that I had to update to SP2. Not a problem, I'd done it before without a hitch. Only this time I receive an error message "Access is denied," and it uninstalls itself. What gives?
i just installed acrobat 5 full version and am trying to delete the desktop shortcut. Everytime i try it itells me "Cannot delete Adobe Acrobat 5.0: Access is denied. The source file may be in use." I have tried restarting and that didnt help i have gone into the processes and stopped all that were allowed still with no luck. I am running win 2K prof and am only a power user on this machine as it is at work any ideas would be great.
My XP home edition recently crashed and I wasn't able to get it back up and running with the recovery disc. I ended up using another hard drive and installing XP Pro. I now have the original drive connected as a slave drive but I am unable to access the files I had in Documents and Settings under my user name. It gives me an "access denied" message when I try and open anything under user. When I try to transfer the files with the File Transfer Wizard, the folder comes up blank, but I know the files are there, one of the steps of selecting the files, shows them all there, but even when I select the files individually and transfer them to the C drive with the file wizard, they are not there.
when windows was updating my computer about half way threw i got a message access denied and that service pack 2 did not finish installing and it uninstall what it had already installed
Please login with adminstator privilegages and try again? I'm logged in as Admin on my Windows XP Home. It happens when i try to start COD and The Sims.
Whenever I use "msconfig" I got the following error message:"System Configuratio Utility An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change aservice. You many need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes." It was happening after I changed at msconfig's startup programs "system gruard" of system mechanic pro 6.
For some reason every time I install anything related to Windows Installer I get the error that the access to the file is denied? So why is this happening?
my computer MB took a dump so I bought a new system. I figured I just boot the new system using my old hard drive. No dice. So I boot the new system using the hard drive and OS that came with it and installed my old drive as a slave. When I try to access the documents and settings folder on the old hard drive so I can pull over the favorites, documents, etc. to my new drive it says access denied. The username and password on my new system are the as on the old one. Any ideas on how to get access to that folder?
I have two computers, on one computer there is a irrepairable version of windows, and I still had some files I wanted to save. So I bought a hard drive enclosure so I could transfer the files onto my laptop, the one I'm using right now. However I used to have a password for my account, and my files were marked private. Now when I try to go into those files, it says 'Access Denied' I was wondering if there was anyway to go around this obstacle, those files are needed.
I want a single desktop click to enable/disable windows XP taskbar auto hide.I can do this if I write a script for the AutoHotkey macro tool to open the relevant dialog box and then check or uncheck the appropriate check box.I'd like to open the dialog box with a command line from AutoHotkey, or a similar operation. Right-clicking the taskbar even in the program is uncool. The catch is, I can execute any CP dialog EXCEPT this one as a command line, either passing a dialog parameter to Control.exe or else using a *.cpl file name with Control.exe or directly. But I can't find "Taskbar and Start Menu".
I have lost my control panel function. When I click on "control panel" I get the message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. My PC is not networked with any other equipment.
I can not get a photo or anything other than a "color" to be my desktop wallpaper. When I am in the control panel - display - the only buttons that are active are the "browse" and "color" buttons. The "position" button does not work. I can't even get one of the Windows backgrounds to display. The photo I choose to use is there somewhere because it is visible briefly when I start mycomputer. Then it disappears and is replaced by a "color" only screen. This is a very recent problem. I'm guessing some settings are incorrect.
I accidently posted this in "Vista" so I'm reposting it here as the operating system I have is XP Professional. I'm having a problem with "Display" in the Control Panel. Yesterday I visited a website and opened a file. After I did that, my wallpaper changed and it appeared to be whatever the website was. I was able to somehow get it off (don't ask me what I did, I couldn't tell you). Now, when I click on "Display" in the Control Panel and go to "Desk Top", the only thing that I can change is the color and I can also click on "Customize Desktop", but I cannot change the background or click on browse...".
When I try to open "Control Panel" it gives me an error dialog box that says Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. "Control Panel" has been taking longer and longer to load, but now it just stops. Running Windows XP Service Pack 2.
