Booting New System With Old Hard Disk: Getting Access Denied Message?
Feb 6, 2006
my computer MB took a dump so I bought a new system. I figured I just boot the new system using my old hard drive. No dice. So I boot the new system using the hard drive and OS that came with it and installed my old drive as a slave. When I try to access the documents and settings folder on the old hard drive so I can pull over the favorites, documents, etc. to my new drive it says access denied. The username and password on my new system are the as on the old one. Any ideas on how to get access to that folder?

Using XP sp2, trying to clear out some useless files on an external drive, no matter how many files I deleted it didn't make much change in space recovered then I checked the size of Windows Live One backup file,50 gig,(wow) that's 60% of the total drive space, while trying to delete it,I get the message "cannot delete DO_NOT_DELETE.mediaID: access denied" Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that file is not currently in use.

When I try to accessing the other CD, there is an error message stating "d: is not accessible. access is denied". I did try to install UDF Reader, but I still couldn't access the CDs.

Long story short here. Running Windows XP Home Edition. Previously had Microsoft Plus! Superpack for Windows XP installed (Movie Maker2 etc.) AND SP2. Everything worked fine. Then victimized by tons of spyware/adware that required I do a complete system restore. Totally fine now. In trying recently to reinstall the Plus! software, I was prompted to download Movie Maker2 from the MS site. Then discovered that to do that I had to update to SP2. Not a problem, I'd done it before without a hitch. Only this time I receive an error message "Access is denied," and it uninstalls itself. What gives?

My XP home edition recently crashed and I wasn't able to get it back up and running with the recovery disc. I ended up using another hard drive and installing XP Pro. I now have the original drive connected as a slave drive but I am unable to access the files I had in Documents and Settings under my user name. It gives me an "access denied" message when I try and open anything under user. When I try to transfer the files with the File Transfer Wizard, the folder comes up blank, but I know the files are there, one of the steps of selecting the files, shows them all there, but even when I select the files individually and transfer them to the C drive with the file wizard, they are not there.

I have two computers, on one computer there is a irrepairable version of windows, and I still had some files I wanted to save. So I bought a hard drive enclosure so I could transfer the files onto my laptop, the one I'm using right now. However I used to have a password for my account, and my files were marked private. Now when I try to go into those files, it says 'Access Denied' I was wondering if there was anyway to go around this obstacle, those files are needed.

I'm having a problem with a laptop that will not boot up.
Lenovo 3000 C100
Windows XP Home
After powering it it up it seems like it does not recognize that the hard drive is there so XP does not boot. No error message. It brings up a Boot Device menu screen with the options to boot from Floppy (does not have one), HardDisk (does not work), CD-ROM or PXE. Choosing HardDisk does not work.
In the BIOS screen the hard disk has the status: "Disable" and there does not seem to be a way to change that. In the BIOS boot sequence the hard disk appears as it should. I've tried reordering the sequence but it makes no difference

My desktop PC motherboard/PSU recently died; it ran Windows XP Home. I enclosed the hard drive in a hard drive enclosure. Now I am trying to access/copy my files from the old hard drive, using a friend's laptop (also running Windows XP Home). At first, I could see the directory of folders in the old hard drive but not the files themselves. So I followed the steps in this article to take ownership of the relevant folders (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421).After taking ownership of the folders, I was able to see the actual files in the folders. However, when I tried to copy them to the laptop, I get something along the lines of this error message:Error Copying File or Folder.

Unfortunatly, a major thunderstorm passed thru my area and my computer was shut down hard and when I brought it up Windows was trashed, missing system files, some noise about disk-drive errors, etc. So I had to install Windows on another drive on the system. I can copy files from anywhere on the drive to the new windows drive except for "my documents" WEHRE OF COURSE Visual Studio Projects, Word documents, IPod, etc, everything, my important stuff is being kept being kept. The message I get is "Access is denied"
When I bring the system up in Safe Mode with networking and look at the security permission tab for that folder I see that my SID Is not there. When I try and add it (my user ID) it validates it and it looks like I can now have access to it, great, but when I click apply the response is "media is write protected" cannot apply permission changes. When I try and copy a file from my new windows drive to the original I get the message Drive is write protected
Try to defrag it from new windows - same message
Try to repair it from new windows - same message
Can anyone tell me where I could find this media write protect switch and where to change it. Windows XP, NTFS all drives, SCSI

If I want to attach second hard disk with the same configuration of master hard disk, then system doesn't show second hard disk altogether or new hard disk begin to malfunction. Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.

I am still having problems with my Windows Installer!! I clicked on start then control panel>then clicked on Administrative tools>then component services>
then i clicked on Services(Local) then i scrolled down the list to Windows Installer, where it says status, it is blank. It doesn't say stopped or started so i clicked on start the service and i got an error 5 message; Could not start the Windows Installer, access is denied. I seem to be getting the same error message for some of the other services too. Here is a list of all the services that stopped, maybe someone out there can look at these and maybe help me out here: Application Management, Indexing Service, COM +System Application, Logical Disk Manager Ad

I did hide this folder on my hard drive before, but all of my other hidden folders that I backed up work fine. I would really appreciate it if somebody could tell me how to gain access to this folder, I have very important information in it.

Running XP on a Sony PVC-RX770 (3 years old). I can never get to a secure site. Message says to re-set security levels which I have done over and over. I have tried restoring system to earlier times with negative results. Sony did not help. I can't even load Norton, buy things, see my bank statements, etc. Here may be a clue. I am sometimes told my system won't accept ActiveX code. I am also told I need to add a drive. I press continue and system runs OK (except the the security problem).

I'd gladly search the archives if I only knew what to call this!Several months ago I requested a feature that prompted W2000 to request that I re-insert the install disk. I did so, but the feature/dll/driver whatever it was (I forget) was not on the disk. Now, whenever I start my machine it stubbornly requests that I insert the install disk. I installed a cool little startup utility by Mike Lin, but am not sure what to turn off.

My XP Pro SP2 laptop has a lot of third-party things installed on it, and I'd like to figure out which one causes more-than-occasional bouts of repetitive hard disk access. The 'hard disk access' LED light gets lit almost-continuously and I can hear the rapid clicking of the disk heads moving, but I can't figure out what's actually being done. It slows down *everything*. It's not just page-faulting -- I can monitor "page faults delta" with Windows Task Manager under "View -> Select Columns..." -- something's accessing files a lot. It almost always happens when returning from stand-by/suspend.I know it's not antivirus scanning, because I run that manually and turned off automatic protection. Is there a utility for monitoring how much hard disk access each running process is using up in the last 5 seconds or so? Disk Monitor isn't very useful in that regard.
