Utility To Monitor Hard Disk Access?

My XP Pro SP2 laptop has a lot of third-party things installed on it, and I'd like to figure out which one causes more-than-occasional bouts of repetitive hard disk access. The 'hard disk access' LED light gets lit almost-continuously and I can hear the rapid clicking of the disk heads moving, but I can't figure out what's actually being done. It slows down *everything*. It's not just page-faulting -- I can monitor "page faults delta" with Windows Task Manager under "View -> Select Columns..." -- something's accessing files a lot. It almost always happens when returning from stand-by/suspend.I know it's not antivirus scanning, because I run that manually and turned off automatic protection.Is there a utility for monitoring how much hard disk access each running process is using up in the last 5 seconds or so? Disk Monitor isn't very useful in that regard.

The motherboard in my emachine was fried. i removed my maxtor hard drive and put it in another computer as the master drive but it would not boot. then i put it it as a secondary drive and it was recognized the drive but i cannot access the files in documents and settings for my user name because it is password protected. it says access is denied. i know the password but there is no option to give the computer the password.how can i access those files now? or is there a way to make the drive boot as a master?

I recently replaced my old harddisk to a new harddisk. The old harddisk has windows xp home and other programs installed.I did not format the old harddisk, I only took out the old harddisk and replaced it with a new harddisk. I then installed windows xp home to the new hard disk.While I am installing programs on the new harddisk, I discovered that one of the programs do not allow me to activate the program license because I have previously activated the program on my old windows. I need to do a proper uninstallation to release the license, then I can activate the license of the program in the new hard disk.My question is, can I take out my current new harddisk, replace it with the old harddisk, boot up as normal into the old harddisk windows, uninstall the program inside the old harddisk, then replace the old hardisk with my new harddisk again.

my computer MB took a dump so I bought a new system. I figured I just boot the new system using my old hard drive. No dice. So I boot the new system using the hard drive and OS that came with it and installed my old drive as a slave. When I try to access the documents and settings folder on the old hard drive so I can pull over the favorites, documents, etc. to my new drive it says access denied. The username and password on my new system are the as on the old one. Any ideas on how to get access to that folder?

If I want to attach second hard disk with the same configuration of master hard disk, then system doesn't show second hard disk altogether or new hard disk begin to malfunction. Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.

Whenever I use "msconfig" I got the following error message:"System Configuratio Utility An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change aservice. You many need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes." It was happening after I changed at msconfig's startup programs "system gruard" of system mechanic pro 6.

As part of my monthly maintenance checks I ran Disk Clean up and it took so long to complete that it was almost like a drive-defrag. I had to cancel out of it at least once I try it in safe mode because I was sure it was hanging. Only it wasn't hanging, just running slow. The part that took forever was NOT the pre part where it estimates how much space you can free on the disk. That was done in a few minutes. It was when running Disk Clean up and it was doing the "Compress Old Files" part. It took at least 45 minutes. When I went into Safe Mode, as part of Disk Clean Up, I check something that I think was called "Temporary Index File Searching." that I did not see before in Normal Mode. Why would Disk Clean Up take 3-5 times longer to complete than usual?

I am having some problems with a Asus A7V266-E. It recently had a new hard drive put in and after that it froze and whouldn't even show anything on the moniter. Since then I have reset the CDCTRL or something beside the motherboard battery. I have gotten the bios to recognize the hard drive now and have actually been able to install and run windows from it. Upon boot right after the "Energy" screen it says "Fast Trak "lite" Bios ver. 1.31 (Build 24) Scanning IDE Drives. and after that and hitting "Ctrl + F" as it says to do In the FastBuild it says there is no disk found and does not let me change anything withing since after hitting any key it reboots the system. If "Cltr + F" isn't hit it will eventually load into windows. Please help me, I'd like to know how to fix the problem of the Fastbuild not thinking there is a HD and slowing the booting process down that much.

When I try to run Disk Cleanup, the message comes up, "Disk Cleanup is calculating how much space." but the progress bar is frozen at about 10% and nothing happens.How do I unfreeze it so the utility will run?

When using the Disk Cleanup, if you never want to "Compress Old Files" (which is often annoying and takes a long time) follow this tip: Locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerVolumeCachesCompress Old FilesOn the Edit menu, click Export, in case you change your mind.On the Edit menu again now click Delete. i realised my pc cannot resume from a standby or hibernate. it shows a BSOD. some kernel inpage error. i surfed several forums about it.they say to run dskchk. but i cant use any of hard disk utilities. dskchk doesnt find my drives. i installed HD tune. it says no disks were found. i thought maybe somethin is wrong wid OS.. so tried a reinstall. but even it cant find my partitions. so i cant even format my pc now.. i can open & use my drives perfectly from my computer but problem is with disk utilities... Disk management doesnt show any of my partitins, it only shows my dvd drive. disk defragment shows them but cannot defrag. so i cannot defrag, scan for errors, format any of my drives. at one forum sum1 mentioned trojan remover can fix this... i installed it & started scan.. but it detects my system files as malicious & asks for action. but i aborted the scan cuz i'm afraid if it deletes or excludes sytem critical files i wont be able to boot & neither i can reinstall OS. so there is very much chance of data loss.

I used the backup utility that comes with XPPro/(i am running sp2) and used the wizard process.I chose the one that says you will be prompted to make a floppy once the back-up is done.The back up is done(i copied the whole of "C" drive onto another drive on my machine) but there was no prompt to make a floppy.I guess i have two questions..
1. what happened to the prompt, how do i get the wizarfd to work etc etc
2. to make my own floppy, what files should i put on it?

Using Windows XP Pro. When disk clean-up block appears (not always)the compress files goes on forever. The process doesn't proceed to temp internet files, recycle bin etc.

Recently, I have had Windows XP's check disk utility come up during start up and run through the disks to check for corruption. Every time, it would just scan and be ok. Yesterday however, after my computer was on stand by, I tried to open up thunderbird to check my emails when I got the corrupt file windows message. I restarted and the check utility came up again..this time a lot of messages popped up saying that it was "fixing" the disks etc. When I got back into windows and opened up thunderbird..my entire inbox was gone. Everything else with thunderbird is there instead of the inbox. The check disk is still coming up on startup.

It says that TOTAL SIZE = 39 GB And Free Space = 5 GB Which means that the size of all files on C is 34 GB But when I select all files including Hidden files and Right Click> Properties, its size of all files is only 27 GB.I did clear recycle bin and disk defragmenter C, but still the same. So why is that?

Can I, or how do I transfer the cloned data from the external (pata) to the new internal hard drive (sata)? if someone could tell me how to format windows xp home edition from the bios and not using the xp disk. I have already tried right clicking on drive c and selecting format but the message says windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
So I closed all open programs that I could but still no luck. Then I tried the format from running the run command and typing format c:but I get this message format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format can run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n) so I type y for yes and hit enter then nothing

I upgraded my server, basically all I kept was the two hard drives from the old machine. The one hard drive is for the system files (~13GB) and the other is for storage, user files, etc (~160GB). I figured that then I reinstalled Windows 2000 Server on the System disk, I would just have to assign the other disk a drive letter and be on my way. Instead, in the disk management console, I get "Disk 1 [the 160GB) Dynamic Unreadable" I can revert to a basic disk, but it says I will lose all my information. It is imperative that the data on this disk be recovered.

I am facing two problems with my lap top hp campac presario 2100.
1.The loptops battery to be changed. I dont know how many batteries are there. Any cmos battery there like any other pc. Pl advice. What would be the cost. and the model number . The hard disk requires replacement. I want to know the model numberor exact type of hard disk would be fit in. and the cost thereof.3. Windows xp home edition has been preloaded in the laptop. Last week i installed windows XP Pro on my desktop. It has a 250GB hard drive which has 1 partition (C drive only), NTFS offcourse. I did not format it while installing windows as it has lots of stuff in it. There's over 50GB free and i�ve been removing a lot of stuff from the hard drive to make up some space but in windows i get an error message that i don't have enough disk space, the disk cleanup utility runs cant free up space and i can not install or copy anything in the hard drive. I've noticed that when i deleted some file holding (or not) the shift key the free size goes lower although the files are being deleted from the hard disk.

Hey, have built a new pc, but am using the same hd as my old one, when booting i get a "disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter" however when i press enter it boots up, not really a big problem just annoying and i wonderd if anyone could help get rid of it.

my dad's hard drive crashed and so he has just bought another, now he needs to reinstall Windows XP Home but unfortunately he doesnt have a disk as its an HP machine and a disc was never supplied, the operating system was already on the computer and the option of making a recovery disc was available but he never actually undertook that option So he needs to get Windown back on his computer, he has the serial sticker on the side of his machine, he rang up HP and they said the machine is not in warranty - they cant send him a replacement disc

On my box at home, I have Norton System Works, which contains a registry diagnostic/sweeper.At work, where I run Windows 2000 Pro, I was wondering...I know there are various registry diagnostic & cleaner utilities out there on the web, but I thought I had heard that Windows itself either includes one on the OS disc or makes one available for download.Is there such a thing as an official Windows Registry utility?
