I'm looking for an all around good disk utility program that will monitor many different aspects of my harddrives etc. I'm only looking for free software though. If you have any suggestions, feel free to post them.
View 3 RepliesI have a Dell Dimension XPS T700r with Windows 98. I cannot run defrag, scandisk, or Norton Systemworks scan of my disk. The error says that drive C is blocked by disk utility.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 2 hdds on my system and windows xp crashed and would not recover from main drive so in an effort to save my data I loaded windows on secondary drive which worked, and gave me access to the old drive, all files were in tact and so I tryed to use windows recovery on winXP cd to no avail. When I try to boot from the original drive I get "boot disk failure, insert system disk and press enter" The thing that makes no sense is that I have rewritten the boot sector and mbr I also used the automatic recovery feature on the windows install disk and all looked like it went fine but still no boot

View 10 Replies View RelatedThis is an odd problem that just won't go away, I have a friends computer who has win XP sp-2 they had Norton 2005 on it and uninstalled it cause it is just junk anyway. But the problem is that any program that needs to be installed or updated now gives the message that you need to install the norton disk in CD drive for unknownname install.In event viewer is says "Source: MsiInstaller, Type: Warning, Category: none, Event ID: 1001, Description: Detection of product '{C6F5B6CF-609C-428E-CA83176C021B}', feature 'Complete' failed during request for component'{A07EA0AF-E117-4A34-8D54-5D826F12988C}' for more help & support" blah, blah no help at web link.Also I cannot get windows update site to even load with anything in it all no message just blank, other websites seem fine.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI can't make a good MS-DOS startup disk (for BIOS flashing) from XP SP2.I select the "Make an MS-DOS startup disk" from the Format dialog.Sometimes it gives up without a warning (i.e. the progress bar resets itself and the "Start" button goes active again). Sometimes it completes with a success message. However the disks never boot. I get the following messages from the BIOS (abbreviated a bit!): Looking for boot record on floppy... OK I've tried with a least 7 different floppy disks, all with the same result. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get it to work? I've also tried to make a MS-DOS boot disk on a Windows 2000 machine by downloading some freeware, but this does not work. I think the floppy drive is OK because I can boot from a Linux floppy disk (memtest86).

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy computer was OK since I shut it off last night. I don't know if I did something wrong to it. This morning, at the logon menu I was surprised~ There are many message boxes appeared saying that Program files is corrupted and bla bla bla~ If my dad knows this, I'll get grounded. The next thing I realised is, there are these start bar messages telling me " The file or directory H:Program Files is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility" and H is where my program files folder is because I renamed it from C to H.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAs part of my monthly maintenance checks I ran Disk Clean up and it took so long to complete that it was almost like a drive-defrag. I had to cancel out of it at least once I try it in safe mode because I was sure it was hanging. Only it wasn't hanging, just running slow. The part that took forever was NOT the pre part where it estimates how much space you can free on the disk. That was done in a few minutes. It was when running Disk Clean up and it was doing the "Compress Old Files" part. It took at least 45 minutes. When I went into Safe Mode, as part of Disk Clean Up, I check something that I think was called "Temporary Index File Searching." that I did not see before in Normal Mode. Why would Disk Clean Up take 3-5 times longer to complete than usual?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am having some problems with a Asus A7V266-E. It recently had a new hard drive put in and after that it froze and whouldn't even show anything on the moniter. Since then I have reset the CDCTRL or something beside the motherboard battery. I have gotten the bios to recognize the hard drive now and have actually been able to install and run windows from it. Upon boot right after the "Energy" screen it says "Fast Trak "lite" Bios ver. 1.31 (Build 24) Scanning IDE Drives. and after that and hitting "Ctrl + F" as it says to do In the FastBuild it says there is no disk found and does not let me change anything withing since after hitting any key it reboots the system. If "Cltr + F" isn't hit it will eventually load into windows. Please help me, I'd like to know how to fix the problem of the Fastbuild not thinking there is a HD and slowing the booting process down that much.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi realised my pc cannot resume from a standby or hibernate. it shows a BSOD. some kernel inpage error. i surfed several forums about it.they say to run dskchk. but i cant use any of hard disk utilities. dskchk doesnt find my drives. i installed HD tune. it says no disks were found. i thought maybe somethin is wrong wid OS.. so tried a reinstall. but even it cant find my partitions. so i cant even format my pc now.. i can open & use my drives perfectly from my computer but problem is with disk utilities... Disk management doesnt show any of my partitins, it only shows my dvd drive. disk defragment shows them but cannot defrag. so i cannot defrag, scan for errors, format any of my drives. at one forum sum1 mentioned trojan remover can fix this... i installed it & started scan.. but it detects my system files as malicious & asks for action. but i aborted the scan cuz i'm afraid if it deletes or excludes sytem critical files i wont be able to boot & neither i can reinstall OS. so there is very much chance of data loss.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI used the backup utility that comes with XPPro/(i am running sp2) and used the wizard process.I chose the one that says you will be prompted to make a floppy once the back-up is done.The back up is done(i copied the whole of "C" drive onto another drive on my machine) but there was no prompt to make a floppy.I guess i have two questions..
1. what happened to the prompt, how do i get the wizarfd to work etc etc
2. to make my own floppy, what files should i put on it?
My XP Pro SP2 laptop has a lot of third-party things installed on it, and I'd like to figure out which one causes more-than-occasional bouts of repetitive hard disk access. The 'hard disk access' LED light gets lit almost-continuously and I can hear the rapid clicking of the disk heads moving, but I can't figure out what's actually being done. It slows down *everything*. It's not just page-faulting -- I can monitor "page faults delta" with Windows Task Manager under "View -> Select Columns..." -- something's accessing files a lot. It almost always happens when returning from stand-by/suspend.I know it's not antivirus scanning, because I run that manually and turned off automatic protection.Is there a utility for monitoring how much hard disk access each running process is using up in the last 5 seconds or so? Disk Monitor isn't very useful in that regard.

View 5 Replies View RelatedRecently, I have had Windows XP's check disk utility come up during start up and run through the disks to check for corruption. Every time, it would just scan and be ok. Yesterday however, after my computer was on stand by, I tried to open up thunderbird to check my emails when I got the corrupt file windows message. I restarted and the check utility came up again..this time a lot of messages popped up saying that it was "fixing" the disks etc. When I got back into windows and opened up thunderbird..my entire inbox was gone. Everything else with thunderbird is there instead of the inbox. The check disk is still coming up on startup.

View 3 Replies View RelatedDuring System startup, the system always halts at "Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility". The only way I can manage to boot to Windows is by selecting "Boot to utility partition" from the Boot Device Menu or if there is a Windows XP installation CD in the cd-rom drive. When I boot this way, everything works fine .This behavior started when I performed a fresh install of XP Professional (XP Home came with the system). The problem did not start immediately after the installation; I was able to install some drivers and reboot a couple times (maybe twice) before it happened. When I installed the display driver (from Dell) and rebooted, it went to the "Strike F1. " screen. I have since tried another fresh installation of XP Home (the original OS) and the problem is still occuring. This time it occurs immediately after the installation; No drivers have been installed at this point.

There is an extra space (where maybe the drive is supposed to go) and then the period. I've tried a system restore to a date before I loaded a new photoshop program with no success. I see the others have run a program called "HijackThis v1.99.1" == then copied that log into the post. I've never used that program -- where can I find it and then what do I do so I can give you better information.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI ran a program called "The Cleaner" which is a trojan hunter program.It found only 3 traces of "mywebsearch" that I removed. After reboot I can successfully log into any of the user accounts, but it's like the shell is not fully functioning. All I have is my wallpaper. Nothing else. No icons, no task bar. Right clicking does not work. I can however Ctrl-Alt-Del and bring up Task Manager. I noticed that explorer is not running. I can go to "New Task" and type in explorer and it opens up a folder in explorer view. I can navigate through all my files and run any and all applications. I can connect to the internet and use my browsers just fine. I thought, "well, I'll boot into safe mode and see what's going on." When I try to boot into safe mode, I get an error message.

The old harddisk has windows xp home and other programs installed.I did not format the old harddisk, I only took out the old harddisk and replaced it with a new harddisk. I then installed windows xp home to the new hard disk.While I am installing programs on the new harddisk, I discovered that one of the programs do not allow me to activate the program license because I have previously activated the program on my old windows. I need to do a proper uninstallation to release the license, then I can activate the license of the program in the new hard disk.My question is, can I take out my current new harddisk, replace it with the old harddisk, boot up as normal into the old harddisk windows, uninstall the program inside the old harddisk, then replace the old hardisk with my new harddisk again.

I had Windows Explorer open while running my compter today and noticed that C:Program Files and C:Windows folders was growing. They must have started out at about 1GB or so and by the time they had stopped growing the C:Program Files folder was a little over 3GB and the C:Windows folder was a little over 4GB. I don't know if this is normal or not but am including the text from a HiJackThis log. I am running Windows XP Pro. Can someone tell me if there is a problem or if this is normal?
