My computer has been freezing up latley. I tried to do system restore but it will only let me go back one day. I am also getting a message that says firefox.exe- the file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:
View 12 RepliesI dont know when it started, but almost exactly after a week or so of me using this machine, it comes up with a The File or Directory C: is corrupt and unreadable. Please Run the Chkdsk Utility. error.I always try and run checkdisk, but then it comes up with the exact same error trying to load Checkdisk.
I end up Reformatting, and reloading everything, and then almost Exactly, The Same thing happens in a week... or just under. (its been 6 days now i think since the last time)
I have a Pentium 4, Windows XP Home Edition and this problem is driving me mad. My pc says dskchkr.exe - application error. When I try to run diskchecker it says "it is unable to run in autofix mode because volume c: is in use by another application" and asks if i want to schedule it to run on startup. It will not run on startup. I also have had this message onscreen "The file or directory c:WINDOWSPrefetchMCUIMGR.exe-0E667E1B.pf is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility. !!!
I have taken Macafee off my pc (or I HOPE so), and now I have NO diskchecker on AT ALL. I think I have some programs on which I thought I had removed but I cant get rid of them all without paying. Im losing my mind !!!!
My computer was OK since I shut it off last night. I don't know if I did something wrong to it. This morning, at the logon menu I was surprised~ There are many message boxes appeared saying that Program files is corrupted and bla bla bla~ If my dad knows this, I'll get grounded. The next thing I realised is, there are these start bar messages telling me " The file or directory H:Program Files is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility" and H is where my program files folder is because I renamed it from C to H.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running a desktop PC (Dell Dimension 4700) with XP Pro SP3, 1.5 GB RAM. Both keyboard and mouse are USB. Over the last several weeks the computer freezes and I am puzzled about how to go through the troubleshooting. It is rather infrequent (maybe 4-5 times over 6-8 weeks?)When it freezes there is no apparent disk activity. The display appears perfectly normal. It appears to be random and infrequent. When it freezes there is no apparent response to either keyboard or mouse. Pushing the power button briefly does nothing, but pushing and holding the power button does result in the expected shutdown.

Eventually after several restarts windows loaded but this continues to happen randomly. Also my computer keeps freezing and I get random disk read errors I have run a check on the hard drive and ram and both these seem to be working ok I have also run several spy ware and antiviruses can anybody help

View 6 Replies View RelatedAs part of my monthly maintenance checks I ran Disk Clean up and it took so long to complete that it was almost like a drive-defrag. I had to cancel out of it at least once I try it in safe mode because I was sure it was hanging. Only it wasn't hanging, just running slow. The part that took forever was NOT the pre part where it estimates how much space you can free on the disk. That was done in a few minutes. It was when running Disk Clean up and it was doing the "Compress Old Files" part. It took at least 45 minutes. When I went into Safe Mode, as part of Disk Clean Up, I check something that I think was called "Temporary Index File Searching." that I did not see before in Normal Mode. Why would Disk Clean Up take 3-5 times longer to complete than usual?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am having some problems with a Asus A7V266-E. It recently had a new hard drive put in and after that it froze and whouldn't even show anything on the moniter. Since then I have reset the CDCTRL or something beside the motherboard battery. I have gotten the bios to recognize the hard drive now and have actually been able to install and run windows from it. Upon boot right after the "Energy" screen it says "Fast Trak "lite" Bios ver. 1.31 (Build 24) Scanning IDE Drives. and after that and hitting "Ctrl + F" as it says to do In the FastBuild it says there is no disk found and does not let me change anything withing since after hitting any key it reboots the system. If "Cltr + F" isn't hit it will eventually load into windows. Please help me, I'd like to know how to fix the problem of the Fastbuild not thinking there is a HD and slowing the booting process down that much.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi realised my pc cannot resume from a standby or hibernate. it shows a BSOD. some kernel inpage error. i surfed several forums about it.they say to run dskchk. but i cant use any of hard disk utilities. dskchk doesnt find my drives. i installed HD tune. it says no disks were found. i thought maybe somethin is wrong wid OS.. so tried a reinstall. but even it cant find my partitions. so i cant even format my pc now.. i can open & use my drives perfectly from my computer but problem is with disk utilities... Disk management doesnt show any of my partitins, it only shows my dvd drive. disk defragment shows them but cannot defrag. so i cannot defrag, scan for errors, format any of my drives. at one forum sum1 mentioned trojan remover can fix this... i installed it & started scan.. but it detects my system files as malicious & asks for action. but i aborted the scan cuz i'm afraid if it deletes or excludes sytem critical files i wont be able to boot & neither i can reinstall OS. so there is very much chance of data loss.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI used the backup utility that comes with XPPro/(i am running sp2) and used the wizard process.I chose the one that says you will be prompted to make a floppy once the back-up is done.The back up is done(i copied the whole of "C" drive onto another drive on my machine) but there was no prompt to make a floppy.I guess i have two questions..
1. what happened to the prompt, how do i get the wizarfd to work etc etc
2. to make my own floppy, what files should i put on it?
This is about my old dell machine, I have it booting from an even older HD of 20gigs. To day I tried it's origenal HD which is also a western digital of 40gigs. I tryed it to see if I could do a chkdsk /r on it. I pressed "r" and got to the concole, typed in the necessary.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy XP Pro SP2 laptop has a lot of third-party things installed on it, and I'd like to figure out which one causes more-than-occasional bouts of repetitive hard disk access. The 'hard disk access' LED light gets lit almost-continuously and I can hear the rapid clicking of the disk heads moving, but I can't figure out what's actually being done. It slows down *everything*. It's not just page-faulting -- I can monitor "page faults delta" with Windows Task Manager under "View -> Select Columns..." -- something's accessing files a lot. It almost always happens when returning from stand-by/suspend.I know it's not antivirus scanning, because I run that manually and turned off automatic protection.Is there a utility for monitoring how much hard disk access each running process is using up in the last 5 seconds or so? Disk Monitor isn't very useful in that regard.

View 5 Replies View RelatedRecently, I have had Windows XP's check disk utility come up during start up and run through the disks to check for corruption. Every time, it would just scan and be ok. Yesterday however, after my computer was on stand by, I tried to open up thunderbird to check my emails when I got the corrupt file windows message. I restarted and the check utility came up again..this time a lot of messages popped up saying that it was "fixing" the disks etc. When I got back into windows and opened up thunderbird..my entire inbox was gone. Everything else with thunderbird is there instead of the inbox. The check disk is still coming up on startup.

Anyways, I'm trying to reinstall Windows due to some problems I'm having and it's saying one of the files on the disk is corrupt. It required me to abort the installation before it even started and I didn't bother to write down what the offending file was because I believed it.I've treated the CD poorly and I wouldn't have been surprised if the drive couldn't read it at all. Basically I'm wondering if I have any options for getting a new CD cheaply since I already own one or if I just need to go buy a new copy of Windows XP? Thanks.

The computer is a dell latitude d630, wiped with bcwipe, using streamlined xp install sp3. This issue has happened on mulitple systems. We have used the install disk in other systems and it works. The only step we have not tried is a putting the hard disk in another system. I wondering if there is anything that could cause this besides a corrupt hard disk.

Whilst in the process of moving/renaming partitions I've managed to corrupt my harddrive which contains an xp operating system, four partitions and 150 gigabytes of movies etc. I've now installed xp on my other drive but it wont recognise the other one. Infact its not recognising the other disc or its patitions at all, even thru windows recovery 'chkdsk' where it just says disk it unformatted. Norton disc doctor at least recognised the disc as corrupted (and unformatted) and declares a bad partion table but is unable to fix it. I think my data is probably lost for good and I'm going to have to reformat
View 2 Replies View RelatedI frequently get a blue screen when using my computer, often when playing a high memory game (specifically WoW) and running other programs such as ventrilo. Occasionally, it says kernal memory dump...etc. But usually its just a blank blue screen. When I load windows, pressing delete does not enter me into setup mode, and my windows CD will not load up on restart either. I tried to uninstall my hard drive driver, and it worked, and it seems to have reloaded on restart I thought it might be corrupt but now whenever I go into device manager, it asks me if I want to restart to enable these changes, even though I havent changed everything.

I experienced this before I had to re-install windows a few weeks back.The first time, I pressed enter, and the system started up fine. The second time, the secondary loading screen (that's what I call it...it's like little white rectangles at the bottom of a black screen...you know the ne, right?).
