View 5 Replies View RelatedThis is an older Dell Dimension desktop pc. It is running a RAID configuration with 2 drives. When I try to do the repair function in the recovery console, the hard drives do not show up in the MAP commmand. Also they are not listed in the Windows setup. However, they do show up in the BIOS, but not available in the boot sequence.I am not that familiar with RAID, are the drives fried or is the system not able to recognize b/c of the RAID?

Cannot access data all of a sudden, I am getting an error message, "file system corrupt and unreadable." In disk management, the drive is listed as healthy, 160G, but no NTFS listed. What could have caused this, and is there a way to retrieve the data? Are there any low-cost or freeware programs to do this, or is it inevitable to spend a "fortune?"

The computer will not boot after trying to run Autocheck (file is missing or corrupt) and the gives an error. I tried to use the Windows XP disc and the setup sees the partition but cannot recognise the format.Unfortunatley I don't know any commands in command line / repair console. Does anyone know commands to get the machine to run checks / get the machine to install XP? Formatting is the last option as there are some data on the machine that is not backed up.

How does one go about accomplishing this? I've been looking around and found how to run it on the C-drive, is it any different for the A-drive?

After the drivers and such have loaded up and I enter the recovery console, I type format c:, it asks me for confirmation and I type yes. When I press enter, the screen looks as though it is loading for a second but then just returns to the recovery console without having done anything. I have two laptops, a ThinkPad T30 and a Latitude C840 (they are both working with XP SP2, except the T30 doesn't have a screen). I'd like to move the T30's drive into the C840, but when I do this, the C840 will hang right after the BIOS screen (incl. the XP CD's Press a key to boot off the CD if I tell it to boot from the disc drive first). My first thought was to try Recovery Console from the XP CD. I can log into the install, and I've already tried fixmbring and fixbooting it. This doesn't help.
This leaves the option of the drivers not being right. I installed the C840 chipset drivers, nothing. I'd really rather not go on a wild goose chase trying to figure out what'll get things up and running
How do I reinstall Windows XP on my laptop (Compaq V5000 - which is several years old)? The laptop's cd-rom is dead. There is no floppy disk drive. The hard drive has crashed. I have read on some websites that I can make a bootable usb drive. However, I have not been succesful in making a bootable USB thumb drive when the laptop's BIOS doesnt support a USB device to be bootable.The only thing I do have is my desktop computer (which is working fine) and a USB external case for the laptop internal hard drive.
View 8 Replies View Relatedam trying to install WIN XP on a wiped hard drive. When installing we get a blue screen with unmountable boot volume. The computer is a dell latitude d630, wiped with bcwipe, using streamlined xp install sp3. This issue has happened on mulitple systems. We have used the install disk in other systems and it works. The only step we have not tried is a putting the hard disk in another system. I wondering if there is anything that could cause this besides a corrupt hard disk.

Whilst in the process of moving/renaming partitions I've managed to corrupt my harddrive which contains an xp operating system, four partitions and 150 gigabytes of movies etc. I've now installed xp on my other drive but it wont recognise the other one. Infact its not recognising the other disc or its patitions at all, even thru windows recovery 'chkdsk' where it just says disk it unformatted. Norton disc doctor at least recognised the disc as corrupted (and unformatted) and declares a bad partion table but is unable to fix it. I think my data is probably lost for good and I'm going to have to reformat

I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.
Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.
My problem in a nutshell. I'm trying to install XP as a repair but it isn't going well. I've done it before and I'm quite familiar with the steps, but this time there is one new wrinkle. Windows tells me it sees two partitions, which it shouldn't. There is only one, but it is comprised of two HDD's in a stripe setup. There is a total of 1.2TB of space between the two of them. The free space is somewhere in the 800-900 GB range before the machine started having problems. Windows keeps saying that there is only 900 MB of free space, which is not enough to install windows. Laughable. There is a ton of free space on those drives, and there is an existing XP installation, albiet one that doesn't work.

I shut it off when I am done to save power, and just the other day I notice a file on it that is quite large isn't allowing me to open it any longer. It keeps saying that the 'file or folder is corrupt and unreadable'...Weird. I was just looking at the folder yesterday. Is there absolutely anything I can do to get that data back?? All the other files on that hard drive are fine. Why did it target out that file?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have my windows XP Partition on the C Drive. I am trying to extract all the info from my D Drive and put it onto an External Hard drive. For some reason it is just not letting me transfer the files. I have tried to send and copy them over with no luck. I have tried using Acronis T.Image, but doesn't work (tells me that there is bad sectors and can't transfer). Tried using bootable disks (UBCD 4 Win, Drive XML, Norton partition manager 9.0 etc. As soon as I start extracting files it gives me and error message and asks if I want to ignore, retry etc. What would you suggest. I was going to run a disk check on this D drive, but I am afraid of it wiping out some of my files. Is there another bootable disk that I should use for extracting my files.

I decided after hearing it enough times to turn off my computer then turn it back on after a couple of minutes.Upon turning it on it gave me a black screen saying WINDOWSDRIVERSISAPNP.SYS could not be found and to insert the Windows XP CD and to hit 'r' to access recovery console to repair it, fine. View 1 Replies View RelatedLet me preface this by saying I'm a fairly advanced user, a software developer by trade, and I've been digging through google and ms tech support pages trying to find a solution to this. The last time I used this machine it was on SP2. I gave it to my wife well over a year ago and have no idea when or IF SP3 was installed. Of course I don't have the OS disks anymore. She brought it to me yesterday with the dreaded BSOD. I can't be sure what triggered it. Maybe a failed SP3 install, maybe some Chemdraw trial software...I can't be sure.
So I acquired an XP SP3 disc and ran the repair. I got a new BSOD about some missing executable, which I was able to install in the recovery console after entering an empty password. That got me back to my original BSOD so no luck. So my theory is that maybe SP3 is the problem and procede to acquire an XP SP2 disc instead, which happened to be a Dell distribution disc, which was probably a bad idea, but it seemed to work as any other disc would. Now I get a new BSOD telling me I'm missing msvcrt.dll. Which makes sense because EVERY repair that I've done, regardless of disc or service pack, has been unable to copy msvcrt.dll AND msvcp60.dll. Although only after repairing to SP2, do I get the specific BSOD message that this file is missing....
I rebooted, and instead of coming up directly to my desktop, it came up with the log-in screen for the Administrator and me. I selected me, and it came up in safe-mode with the cmd shell. Ok, this is important... I went into msconfig, and safe-mode was NOT selected. So thinking that I needed to do a repair, I inserted my original XP disc and booted into the recovery console. First, I did the normal stuff, like chkdsk and so forth. I also looked at my boot.ini. Everything appeared normal. So I rebooted, same problem.
Went back into the recovery console and did a repair. Everything went along smoothly and guess what! After the first reboot, it gave me the infamous "You are in Safe Mode... you can't do what you are doing in safe mode... you are a bad person and you need to be punished". (Obviously, I'm paraphrasing here). And I'm in the endless reboot cycle. So, I've tried everything (almost) and I would prefer not to do a full re-install. I tried using bootcfg, but this didn't help any since it doesn't say "safe-mode". (Although I did go through the motions). I also deleted my boot.ini and it gave me an error message (no boot.ini, or whatever), and still got stuck in the endless reboot cycle. I also did a fixboot, which didn't help either. And I attempted to do a fixmbr, but I got scared from the "if you do this you are really screwed" message, and didn't proceed.
PC (XP) wont boot, says NTLDR missing.I wonder if anyone could give me any advice about how to salvage my firefox bookmarks from my system which wont even boot. (the bookmarks are all i need to salvage from the c drive as my downloads files and documents are safely stored on my 2nd hard drive) My home PC (windows XP) died a death the other day playing up, wont boot now, says ntldr is missing, wont even boot up in safe mode, it doesnt get as far as giving me an option. (tried swopping cables around and stripped bare to the basics needed to boot but no such luck there either). Boots up with a unix live disc but i noticed it cant detect the c drive on the system, altho it does in bios.
View 7 Replies View RelatedFirst off, i have a 60gb ide drive for my windows installation (3 other drives for storage), and i got a 150gb Raptor X, which is sata. I cloned the 60gb boot drive onto the raptor, but it didnt boot, and said the HAL was corrupt. My guess would be that the hardware abstraction layer got all defunct when it saw the new sata drive, but was expecting an ide? After all that, i decided to run a chkdsk on the ide drive, and clone it again, to see if it booted. I used the recovery console on a windows xp pro disc, but alas, i couldnt chkdsk because i forgot my admin password. Stupid me.
