View 10 Replies View Relatedhave a PC running XP Home SP2.According to the Microsoft URL below, it is advisable to run Check Disk
weekly if you use your PC daily, and Disk Defrag monthly, although more often in certain circumstances. Does that sound like a good time schedule? I realize there is no "official".
I have a dell 600m with Windown XP and when I go to Disk Defrag i get the following message:
disk defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume *C. Please Run Chkdsk /f.
not sure what that means...my system restore points also dont work but otherwise the computer is running smoothly...just afraid that my hard drive could crash again!
Thanks!
I've switched from Windows XP to Windows 2000, because of the fact that I had problems with the GIS program I was working with. Everything went well for a month now, until today. I've uninstalled several programs (not major ones - just mapviewers) to gain more space on the c-drive. I wanted to defrag the c-drive and it gave me an error message "drfgntfs.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You have to restart the program. An error log is being created." I then close defrag and another error message appears "mmc.exe has generated error " the same as above. What am I suppose to do in order to "correct" this?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been defraging my Hard drives on a semi regular basis. seems that after using Norton's Speed disk and after rebooting the sensor warning remains as before. After waiting hours for the process to complete, using windows defrag tells me that the drives should be defraged. Cannot bring the sensor percent number down. I recall reading some where that xp defrag and Nortons speed disk can't get along , so I would like to uninstall windows defrag and see if this helps, How do I uninstall windows defrag?
View 9 Replies View RelatedOn my Sony laptop, I can use Foxfire as my browser and all is OK, but when I try to use IE or windows tools like Clean Disk or Defrag, these processes use 100% CPU and hang up. I use AVG for virus protection and ran it in Safe mode - didn't help. I also bought and installed Uniblue Registry Cleaner - that didn't help either. System Restore isn't a solution either.

I get to select the point which I want to restore to, however when I select the continue / next button, nothing happens. Anyone have an idea as to what could be wrong? I've run anti-virus, anti-malware, (AVG, Malwarebites, Hijackthis) and I've re-installed things just in case a program may have erased it, my comp was last defragged 2 days ago.

I was curious if I could defrag my hard disk while I am listening to music using iTunes. I only have one hard disk and all the music is on that hard disk.
I went to go do my normal clean up on my computer and it says that my disk cleanup and defragment tools are not installed. I just used them 45 or less days ago and I know that I didn't manually uninstall them myself. I am the only one that uses this computer.

I reformatted my computer without WLM and defragging was not a problem, worked like a charm. So, I downloaded and installed WLM again, and lo and behold the same problem occurred, the defrag program would not defrag all the files. I uninstalled WLM and defrag process still wouldn't defrag all the files. How do I solve this problem of not being able to defrag all of my files without reformatting my computer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy general understanding is that it isnt necessary to defrag very often. An occasional defrag should do the trick. Unless, maybe, youve done a lot of stuff recently. I do have several questions though that I hope someone can clear up for me and anyone else that might be interested.
1. Does a pre windows defrag program help any at all? If so, how often should it be run?
2. Is this different than the pre installed Microsoft chkdsk program? Isnt it also a pre windows defrag program?
3. Is one or the other better? Or are they basically the same?
4. What happens if, on occasion, you use a pre windows defrag program and the chkdsk program? Is there a conflict?
5. Does one try to write a certain way and the other rewrites a different way and therefore your wasting your time and effort?
6. Does a pre windows defrag program make a windows defrag program unnecessary?
7. Since it has been stated that the windows defrag program works fine, but isnt the greatest, what if you use a different combination, like, JkDefrag and a pre windows program? I mention JkDefrag because, if you wanted, it can be set to defrag daily or weekly. Set and forget.
8. Assuming one is doing a lot of stuff, when does a registry defrag program enter the picture? Or is one ever needed? Is this just a marketing thing?
9. And, of course, there are also registry cleaners. Again, assuming your doing lots of stuff.
10. And also theres also programs like CCleaner program, which cleans out cookies, temp files, etc.
11. Is there an order that one might want to run these programs? Even if it is only monthly or even less often?
So, my inquiry, isnt which program is better, as I would assume there would be a lot of opinions about that. But rather, what combo might one want to have on hand, or run, on those occasions that you feel the need to defrag. Again, if we look at the CCleaner program, in basically one step, it does a pretty good job of cleaning out all sorts of stuff. If you wanted, it can even be set to clean automatically. Set and forget. If one were to do the same steps, manually, it would take much longer, and maybe, still not be as effective as the CCleaner program. I have Zone Alarm firewall. Basically its set and, for the most part, forgotten about. I have the AVG anti virus program, set to do auto scans on a daily basis. Set and forget.
I have a Toshiba Qosmio running on XP. More than 50GB available and defragment wont start. Don't know what to do, it never did it before.
View 10 Replies View RelatedDepending on the "Expert you speak to" they all have their own opinions. One tells me to defrag daily, another tells my it will damage the hard drive to defrag daily and should not defrag more than once a week.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I use XP's utility to analyze my disk fragmentation, it says "You should defragment this volume", but the defrag process hangs when it is about 1% done. Defragging when booted into Safe Mode doesn't solve the problem. I searched around, and it seems like this might have to do with my FAT32 disk partitions (see my specs). What do you guys think? What would be the next steps?

I've tried it several times and it runs to completion but then when I check it again it is still very fragmented and says that I should defrag it. It reports that my drive is about 35% fragmented. I tried booting in Safe mode, thought that might do the trick but got same results, which means it did nothing. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2.
I downloaded Diskeeper 2007 Pro Premier for a free 30 day trial, decided I didn't want it, uninstalled it and now my XP Pro Defrag has ceased to work any longer.
I get some weird message that it can't initialize and that I must have downloaded a different version .
guess the two were fighting each other.
Point is, can I download MS Defrag as a stand alone (Googled but no luck) or do I have to reinstall XP all over again...
Also, is MS Defrag good enough are does Diskeeper do a better job for the averge home user?
Open a command window and type defrag /? to show a list of commands.Exampel:defrag c: /analyce will show how much your disk is fragmented.

Her CPU is a P4 2.66 GHz; with 1.25GB PC2700 RAM; 80G HDD (using 25%); The only hard ware installed is a printer, high speed modem, and ipod. I updated the drivers for those, and still no help. I also went through add/remove programs and got rid of those that she will never use, I did not remove any system critical programs, I'm an advanced user so I know what not to delete. I also went into the system tools and stopped some services for running auto on system boot. Like her Ipod, I set to manual, Printer (not spoolsvc) I set to manual, etc. I also ran a defrag on the HDD. Still, not much difference.
