I went to go do my normal clean up on my computer and it says that my disk cleanup and defragment tools are not installed. I just used them 45 or less days ago and I know that I didn't manually uninstall them myself. I am the only one that uses this computer.

On my Sony laptop, I can use Foxfire as my browser and all is OK, but when I try to use IE or windows tools like Clean Disk or Defrag, these processes use 100% CPU and hang up. I use AVG for virus protection and ran it in Safe mode - didn't help. I also bought and installed Uniblue Registry Cleaner - that didn't help either. System Restore isn't a solution either.

Just to test it, I clicked on the Options button and
changed the default "age" of files to compress to 7 days instead of 50. Disk Cleanup *still* didn't find any to offer me.
I use "C:WINDOWSsystem32cleanmgr.exe sagerun: 1" in Windows Task Scheduler to run Disk Clean at 12.01 am every night. What syntax should I use to clean the other disks sequentially?

First of all, a SUMMARY: Computer (Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop; Windows XP Home) operating extremely slowly; SERVICES.exe using >99% of CPU (Processor speed c. 1.2GHz) I recently installed DAEMON Tools, the virtual drive programme, and when I first opened it, my laptop slowed to a crawl and stopped responding, meaning I'd to use the 'off' button to switch it off (Ctrl-Alt-Delete didn't work).
Since then, each time I've switched it on, it has been operating as per normal but at a horribly slow speed. I have uninstalled DAEMON, but it seems the problem lies elsewhere; eventually I did get the task manager to come up, and (though it took about 5 minutes) switched to the Processes tab. It turns out that the SERVICES.exe process (run by 'System') is using 99% of my CPU.....
i just did this and it turned most of my mp3's to blue. why is that?

not sure what that means...my system restore points also dont work but otherwise the computer is running smoothly...just afraid that my hard drive could crash again!

I just tried to reformat and install windows XP home edition, and upon coming to the screen of "Repair" or "Install fresh copy" I received an error reporting:Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press F3.I was trying to use ubuntu but my ram wasn't high enough, so now it won't let me run windows xp again.
My daughters Disk Cleanup Utility was hanging when compressing old files. Microsoft has posted an easy fix but the end result is that Disk Cleanup no longer works at all. Has anyone experienced this problem?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a major problem with my Packard Bell iMedia D815AW home desktop. Ever since I installed a Lite-On DVD-RW into it, it started making a lot of noise (a bit like the sound of a typewriter tapping) and started crashing. I removed the DVD-RW drive, only for the problem to continue. The computer kept crashing (often showing the blue crash screen, other times showing a black 'insert floppy disk' screen, sometimes just restarting itself). Running the Windows disk check utility at start-up would not work - the computer would freeze while the disk scan occured (I tried many times). I ran disk registery programs (ie- Registry Mechanic, etc), anti-virus software, defragmentation, etc. etc. but the problem remained. Yesterday, I decided I would try reinstalling (or restoring?) Windows XP again (with the intention of fixing the problem without deleting my personal files on the computer). However, upon instertion of the disk, Windows XP claimed it could not reinstall, as the Windows version on my computer was too recent. I assumed that the reason for this was that I had installed Windows XP Serice Pack 2 and so the version was too recent for the installation disk. So, I thought I would uninstall service pack 2 and then try to reinstall Windows XP. However, while uninstalling service pack 2, the computer crashed. Since then, whenever I try to startup Windows, the computer restarts after about 30 seconds of loading. I can enter the startup screen which gives you access to entering through Safe Mode, Debugging, etc - however entering through these modes has the same problem though with the computer restarting before reaching Windows. So, I entered the computer BIOS at startup and changed it to load via CD, inserting the Windows XP disk. I tried to use the 'Recovery Console' option, however the error message "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" showed. It then asked me to restart the computer by hitting F3. I then tried to use the Windows install option by restarting the computer and loading the Windows XP disk, but the same "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" message showed. So, i cant load the computer, nor reinstall the software. I dont want to lose all the files on my computer.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWow, this is kind of odd I ran disk cleanup and noticed that the size of the temporary files it wants to delete totals about 56 GBs, which is pretty much everything on my HD.It did this once before, only it just deleted Windows, which is pretty ironic.I've tried running chkdsk with the r parameter, and it found nothing, so I'm not sure exactly what to do with a Windows-specific issue like this, especially seeing as I have no restore points other than the latest one, which was just before I found this all out. Reformatting is NOT an option.
