Everytime I try to use it it says>>>> Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume C:,please run chkdsk /f:problem is, my chkdsk does not currently work!
Get this message: "Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume ( C: ).Please run Chkdsk /f." I have windows XP professional chkdsk /f won't run defragmenter won't start because of this message Checked and it is NOT one of the scheduled operations never had this problem before.
I have tried to disk defrag and I keep getting the error message "Disk Defragment could not start." I've tried to reinstall itAlso, System Restore is not working. I get to select the point which I want to restore to, however when I select the continue / next button, nothing happens. Anyone have an idea as to what could be wrong? I've run anti-virus, anti-malware, (AVG, Malwarebites, Hijackthis) and I've re-installed things just in case a program may have erased it, my comp was last defragged 2 days ago.
My computer is running very slow Since reading some of the other entries I have done some of the quick fixes that were listed such as getting rid of programs not used, disk clean-up and disk defrag but still my computer is lagging.
i am getting the screen that says a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down run chkdsk/f.. physical memory dump complete but when i go to do the chkdsk/f it does a chkdsk read-only because it is being used by another volume. i tried to defrag but it crashed.
I downloaded Diskeeper 2007 Pro Premier for a free 30 day trial, decided I didn't want it, uninstalled it and now my XP Pro Defrag has ceased to work any longer. I get some weird message that it can't initialize and that I must have downloaded a different version . guess the two were fighting each other. Point is, can I download MS Defrag as a stand alone (Googled but no luck) or do I have to reinstall XP all over again... Also, is MS Defrag good enough are does Diskeeper do a better job for the averge home user?
have a PC running XP Home SP2.According to the Microsoft URL below, it is advisable to run Check Disk weekly if you use your PC daily, and Disk Defrag monthly, although more often in certain circumstances. Does that sound like a good time schedule? I realize there is no "official".
When I try to open System Information, I get the message; 'Can't Collect Information.' A network error occurred in connecting to Windows Management Instrumentation. Can this be fixed or do I have to reinstall XP? Also Defrag will not work and the Icon for Windows Update doesn't work.
Recently I found System Restore not working. It would neither restore to an earlier time nor create a new restore point. I tried doing a virus scan using Avast, rebooting, checking that it is (supposed to be) running and safe mode.Disconnecting from the Internet and turning off antivirus and firewall also made no difference. I also turned it off and on again. I noticed that initially it said it was monitoring drives C, D & E but after turning on again it only showed drives C & D. These drives are all partitions on my HD.On checking E I found that it had no file system and was advised to format it. On attempting this I got Format did not complete successfully.I also attempted to Defrag and got Disk Defragmenter could not start.
FOR SOME REASON BOTH THE RESTORE AND THE DEFRAG NO LONGER WORK, I CLICK ON THEIR ICONS AND THERE IS NO REACTION AT ALL NOT EVEN A BOX SAYING SOMETHING IS OUT OF WACK. I HAVE CHECKED AND THE SYSTEM RESTORE HAS NOT BEEN TURNED OFF, AND ALL THEIR FILES SEEM IN TACK IN SYSTEM32 ETC.
I have a dell 600m with Windown XP and when I go to Disk Defrag i get the following message: disk defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume *C. Please Run Chkdsk /f.
not sure what that means...my system restore points also dont work but otherwise the computer is running smoothly...just afraid that my hard drive could crash again!
I just ran Defrag and got the image as shown above after completion of the defrag. It does not look like anything happened, maybe even worse than before defrag. Any ideas as to how I can get a good defrag on this machine or what is happening here. I have run two malware applications or programs and my antivirus. Nothing there it appears to be clean.
I've switched from Windows XP to Windows 2000, because of the fact that I had problems with the GIS program I was working with. Everything went well for a month now, until today. I've uninstalled several programs (not major ones - just mapviewers) to gain more space on the c-drive. I wanted to defrag the c-drive and it gave me an error message "drfgntfs.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You have to restart the program. An error log is being created." I then close defrag and another error message appears "mmc.exe has generated error " the same as above. What am I suppose to do in order to "correct" this?
I have been defraging my Hard drives on a semi regular basis. seems that after using Norton's Speed disk and after rebooting the sensor warning remains as before. After waiting hours for the process to complete, using windows defrag tells me that the drives should be defraged. Cannot bring the sensor percent number down. I recall reading some where that xp defrag and Nortons speed disk can't get along , so I would like to uninstall windows defrag and see if this helps, How do I uninstall windows defrag?
On my Sony laptop, I can use Foxfire as my browser and all is OK, but when I try to use IE or windows tools like Clean Disk or Defrag, these processes use 100% CPU and hang up. I use AVG for virus protection and ran it in Safe mode - didn't help. I also bought and installed Uniblue Registry Cleaner - that didn't help either. System Restore isn't a solution either.
i am running windows xp media center edition on my computer and it has just started happening not so long ago but when i goto use disk defrag when i press analyze i get this error message. i have tryed restarting my computer and trying again but i still get this error message even when i press defragment i get it to.
when I started my computer this morning it was stuck on the start up screen where it says windows like it kept showing the bars moving for like a long time. So I just turned it off by pressing the power button (wrong I know). Then I turned it back on and it went to a black screen giving me the options to run it in safe mode, start it from the last known date it was working, or start it normally.
I have an Insignia D400A, 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB RAM, 64 MB Video Memory running Windows XP Home SP2. I was curious if I could defrag my hard disk while I am listening to music using iTunes. I only have one hard disk and all the music is on that hard disk.
I went to go do my normal clean up on my computer and it says that my disk cleanup and defragment tools are not installed. I just used them 45 or less days ago and I know that I didn't manually uninstall them myself. I am the only one that uses this computer.
For the last couple of days, while my computer plays anything from the CD drive with sound, occasionally the sound just stops for a couple of seconds, then comes back, where it should be a few seconds later, as if it has been playing all along, and I just turned off my speakers. Also, maby un-related, but maby not, I cannot compleat a diskcheck. It gets stuck at 0% on the second stage if you ask it to do one as the computer turnes on.
This is about my old dell machine, I have it booting from an even older HD of 20gigs. To day I tried it's origenal HD which is also a western digital of 40gigs. I tryed it to see if I could do a chkdsk /r on it. I pressed "r" and got to the concole, typed in the necessary.
My computer has been freezing up latley. I tried to do system restore but it will only let me go back one day. I am also getting a message that says firefox.exe- the file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:
Win xp pro, pen 4, norton antivirus, Win firewall. After I downloaded and installed Windows Live Messenger the defrag process wouldn't defrag all the files. I reformatted my computer without WLM and defragging was not a problem, worked like a charm. So, I downloaded and installed WLM again, and lo and behold the same problem occurred, the defrag program would not defrag all the files. I uninstalled WLM and defrag process still wouldn't defrag all the files. How do I solve this problem of not being able to defrag all of my files without reformatting my computer.
I've tried it in safe mode too, and I get the same message for defragmenter "disk defragmenter could not start", for scan disk "..could not complete scan ", and system restore just does not respond when I select the restore point, I can only close it.
In device manage it has exclamation by it i uninstalled but if i do add hardware its located w/ exclamation by itif i uninstall an restart its back with exclamation dont work in safe mode works be4 boot when i type in password its disabled on boot.
when i run chdisk for errors in win 2000 by right clicking the hard drive icon and then clicking properties of c: harddrive, then tools tab, then click the check now button, and in the check disk options ticking "automatically fix file system errors" and clicking ok I get this message "The disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer."If i chose yes to that above it performs the diskcheck at reboot and when windows loads i go back to the checkdisk and i get the same problem again.
My problem is is when I booted my comp up yesterday, norton comes up with some odd error about not being able to scan e-mail or instant messenger for viruses, and my internet on just this computer will not work. Now this happened with my other comp when the hard drive was failing. The computer will also at some reboots take forever to get into windows.Sometimes when I try to get into network connections or my computer, it will just hang or I get the flashlight icon scanning. I was able to back up most of my stuff, but when I tried to reformat, it kept saying to close all windows and I ended every program I could think of.I also tried a system restore to Saturday when it was working normal, but I have had no luck. Is it something with windows or is another HDD going? I'm thinking of just RMA'ing the HDD and do a whole new install. My only other option is to use a Linux Suse disk I have and boot from that and see if it works. Here are my specs:Athlon 64 3200+ | Asus A8N5X mobo | 5.1 surround soundcard | 2 GB Corsair PC3200 Ram| 250gig Hitachi Hdd/60 GB WD HDD | 420w PS | EVGA Geforce 7800GT | Logitec 5.1 surrond sound speakers w/subwoofer z-560
Is there a way to run a check disk if xp will not work? I had a system that started to give me strange error messages. I mean they were very odd. The last error that came up, said that I did not have a valid copy of xp and would not let me login to the PC. I even tried to login in safe mode, but that did not work. How would I go about fixing this?
