When I try to open System Information, I get the message; 'Can't Collect Information.' A network error occurred in connecting to Windows Management
Instrumentation. Can this be fixed or do I have to reinstall XP? Also Defrag will not work and the Icon for Windows Update doesn't work.
I have tried to disk defrag and I keep getting the error message "Disk Defragment could not start." I've tried to reinstall itAlso, System Restore is not working. I get to select the point which I want to restore to, however when I select the continue / next button, nothing happens. Anyone have an idea as to what could be wrong? I've run anti-virus, anti-malware, (AVG, Malwarebites, Hijackthis) and I've re-installed things just in case a program may have erased it, my comp was last defragged 2 days ago.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Diskeeper 2007 Pro Premier for a free 30 day trial, decided I didn't want it, uninstalled it and now my XP Pro Defrag has ceased to work any longer.
I get some weird message that it can't initialize and that I must have downloaded a different version .
guess the two were fighting each other.
Point is, can I download MS Defrag as a stand alone (Googled but no luck) or do I have to reinstall XP all over again...
Also, is MS Defrag good enough are does Diskeeper do a better job for the averge home user?
FOR SOME REASON BOTH THE RESTORE AND THE DEFRAG NO LONGER WORK, I CLICK ON THEIR ICONS AND THERE IS NO REACTION AT ALL NOT EVEN A BOX SAYING SOMETHING IS OUT OF WACK. I HAVE CHECKED AND THE SYSTEM RESTORE HAS NOT BEEN TURNED OFF, AND ALL THEIR FILES SEEM IN TACK IN SYSTEM32 ETC.

Defrag runs for 2-3 minutes maybe and the computer freezes or defrag stalls. I have checked for viruses. I have run defrag in safe mode.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWin xp pro, pen 4, norton antivirus, Win firewall. After I downloaded and installed Windows Live Messenger the defrag process wouldn't defrag all the files. I reformatted my computer without WLM and defragging was not a problem, worked like a charm. So, I downloaded and installed WLM again, and lo and behold the same problem occurred, the defrag program would not defrag all the files. I uninstalled WLM and defrag process still wouldn't defrag all the files. How do I solve this problem of not being able to defrag all of my files without reformatting my computer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedDefraging main HardDisk Drive in XP Home edition w/ diskeeper 8.x and everything went smoothly as always, but then I decided to uninstall some useless apps and then went back to re-defrag and the reserved system space disappeared. Diskeeper was moving my files into the area where the reserved system space used to be so I stopped it. I then ran system restore and brought my system back 2days and re-tried to defrag and the reserved system space is still missing. Is this even a big deal? The computer (Dell 4400 P3) seems to be working just fine. Thanks.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt did not come with Windows installed, but came with the Windows SP1 disc and drivers and such. I installed all those, and was off to a great start. But a few hours later, I discovered I couldn't open System Restore, System Information, or Windows Media Player. Since these are all applications that come with Windows, I figured I must have messed up the installation. Being on moderately knowledgeable about computers, many times, my solution is to simply reinstall a program. So, I figured, I have this installation disc still sitting here from just a few hours ago, why not just give it another go?

I tried doing a virus scan using Avast, rebooting, checking that it is (supposed to be) running and safe mode.Disconnecting from the Internet and turning off antivirus and firewall also made no difference. I also turned it off and on again. I noticed that initially it said it was monitoring drives C, D & E but after turning on again it only showed drives C & D. These drives are all partitions on my HD.On checking E I found that it had no file system and was advised to format it. On attempting this I got Format did not complete successfully.I also attempted to Defrag and got Disk Defragmenter could not start.

I went to defrag and the Bar was solid red. Windows defrag won't touch it so I tried installing Diskeeper's new 2007 version only to find out it wasn't compatable with 2000 server. Anyone know of a good program that will work on 2000 server? Thanks

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a problem with my external hard drive…which I informed you guys about. I was advised to solve the problem (potentially) using chkdsk on the drive. It worked to an extent Some, in fact the majority of files were recovered. However the problem remains in that not all files were recovered and NOW one file…when clicked on to gain access I am told that the drive is not formatted and would I like to format it now. Of course, I would not as the information is important. I enclose a copy of my previous letter to give you a full spectra of the saga.I am having problems with an external hard drive I purchased about a year ago. Files seem to be disappearing. I have a file which contained about 12gb of information (music files etc). The file now only has 88mb of information. It is the top part of the files but as you can see is only a raction of what it used to be. What has happened to the files? I have done a search in the drive…and no sign of them. Also, the system information does not register any
increase on the ‘free space’ of the drive. I am at a loss. What is happening? Can I retrieve the files? It is really punishing to think that they may be lost to me for good.
Cannot see any sign of the System Volume Information folder in Explorer or any other file browser program I try. It is not grayed out, it is not there. When I enter Tools, Folder Options, View, the Show hidden files and folders is selected. As a matter of fact, if I then select Do not show hidden files and folders, the next time I open View, it has gone back to Show hidden files and folders! Even though hidden folders should therefore show, the SVI folder remains hidden. I have examined my system by booting with BartPE XPE and there is the SVI folder with all the restore points, etc. I am using XPPRO, NTFS.

I've tried the Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools way and also tried Start/Run/msinfo32.exe and again through the HelpandSupport page and the same thing happens. Have searched the net and found other people who have the same problem and tried some suggestions but nothing has worked so far.
