Activation Couldn't Open System Restore - System Information

Feb 14, 2008

It did not come with Windows installed, but came with the Windows SP1 disc and drivers and such. I installed all those, and was off to a great start. But a few hours later, I discovered I couldn't open System Restore, System Information, or Windows Media Player. Since these are all applications that come with Windows, I figured I must have messed up the installation. Being on moderately knowledgeable about computers, many times, my solution is to simply reinstall a program. So, I figured, I have this installation disc still sitting here from just a few hours ago, why not just give it another go?

Couldn't Even Get System Restore To Work

Jul 28, 2007

My PC began looping from the Dell splash screen to the Windows start-up screen, then clicking off and repeating....over and over. I tried several things and couldn't even get System Restore to work. Finally, after several well-intended friends had me fooling with my command prompts (I'm sure that was a mistake), I decided to just reinstall Windows XP. Well, now it's reinstalled, but I can't connect to the internet, none of my drivers are recognized and nothing is showing up on my desktop, When I go into My Computer and look on my hard drive, all of my programs and files are still there....but the operating system doesn't seem to know where to find them. I have a desktop Dell Dimension 4600.

Cannot Open Recovered Files After System Restore

Oct 11, 2010

I have a folder containing pdf's, word and excel documents and mp3s (about 13 GB in size ). When I opened my mother's laptop, I discovered that someone accidentally dragged my folder to another folder next to it (my whole famiy uses that laptop) I opened it and all of my files were deleted! So, I searched for ways to recover deleted files and installed a software to recover it on drive C: (my folder is in drive D: ) . The program was able to locate my files but I cannot recover it because the program is not free so I downloaded other free programs. The other drive's space is not enough to accommodate the deleted files so ( not knowing the consequences of my actions ) I transferred some files of C: to D: (about 1.5 GB ). However, the free program was not able to find my files so I searched again. I tried System Restore and I was able to recover it. But when I tried opening the files, it says that "There was an error opening this document. Access is denied" for pdf,s, "Windows Media Player cannot access the file.

I did a systeme restore, after it finished and restarted it came back to my explorer (desktop) and nothing loaded. I ctrl+alt+deleted and some things where running in the background.I "hard" restarted my computer and it still took me back to the blank explorer (desktop).I ran a new task and opened up firefox, when it poped up my desktop poped up and everthing in the task manager loaded but was very slow and nothing worked and it just froze. I then tried a different restore point and the same problem countinued.I then put in the windows repair disk and tried to fix the boot and still nothing. If I turn on the computer and put it into safe mode the desk top will load. But in normal mode it wont for a very long time and when it does it doesnt work.

Getting System Information From System Tools?

Feb 5, 2006

It used to be, when I clicked on All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information, I would get a small text box that popped up on the screen with a lot of information of the system, including the amount of memory installed and the amount used, the size of the hard drive and the amount used, ect., and it would also have a small text box at the bottom that would let one search system information.

Now, suddenly, when I go to System Information and click on it, it simply gives me the Windows Help and Support Center.I know that I can use Everest to find the same info, but this little Windows info box was handy and quick, especially for just checking memory usage. I think the that it is the Msinfo32.exe But even when I put that in the "Run" box, it still simply gives me the Windows Help and Support Center.

System Information Does Not Register Any Increase

Jun 23, 2005

I had a problem with my external hard drive…which I informed you guys about. I was advised to solve the problem (potentially) using chkdsk on the drive. It worked to an extent Some, in fact the majority of files were recovered. However the problem remains in that not all files were recovered and NOW one file…when clicked on to gain access I am told that the drive is not formatted and would I like to format it now. Of course, I would not as the information is important. I enclose a copy of my previous letter to give you a full spectra of the saga.I am having problems with an external hard drive I purchased about a year ago. Files seem to be disappearing. I have a file which contained about 12gb of information (music files etc). The file now only has 88mb of information. It is the top part of the files but as you can see is only a raction of what it used to be. What has happened to the files? I have done a search in the drive…and no sign of them. Also, the system information does not register any
increase on the ‘free space’ of the drive. I am at a loss. What is happening? Can I retrieve the files? It is really punishing to think that they may be lost to me for good.

System Volume Information Folder

Jul 27, 2007

Cannot see any sign of the System Volume Information folder in Explorer or any other file browser program I try. It is not grayed out, it is not there. When I enter Tools, Folder Options, View, the Show hidden files and folders is selected. As a matter of fact, if I then select Do not show hidden files and folders, the next time I open View, it has gone back to Show hidden files and folders! Even though hidden folders should therefore show, the SVI folder remains hidden. I have examined my system by booting with BartPE XPE and there is the SVI folder with all the restore points, etc. I am using XPPRO, NTFS.

Xp Activation Backup / Restore

Jan 17, 2008

I have been having ALOT of trouble with my computer lately and it has been relating to an MBR virus. I ran 4 different low level virus wipers and 3 low level formats on my drive to get rid of it and it worked. Before I did all of this i was sure to backup my windows activation information. So I looked up what to backup online and the general consensus was to go to the system32 folder and backup wpa.dbl and wpa.bak, so i did. I finnally got windows re-installed and stable and just how it was before all of this. So I went into safe mode, backed up the un-activated wpa.dbl file that was there and replaced it with the previosly activated wpa.dbl and wpa.bak files. I rebooted normally and when i arrived at the logon screen it told me that windows MUST be activated and do I wish to do so. I chose no and it went back to the logon screen. I clicked on my user name once more and it went straight through but once I arrived at the desktop it told me windows was still un-activated and my 30-Day grace period was still active. I need to figure out how I can get my version of windows re-activated with my back-up files becuase I have already activated my code twice in the last month and they will not let me do it again.

Activation After Restore Using PCAngel

Oct 14, 2009

It's been infected with some new malware which AV vendors have a generic detection but could not repair. To save time, I decided to use the O/S restore function (replace system files, retain user data) using PCAngel, which seemingly worked ok.However, on system reboot I receive the Windows Product Activation error message, asking me "Do you want to activate Windows now?". If I reply NO, of course I get logged off. But if I reply YES then it goes briefly to a blank version of my desktop and then logs me off.In other words, I never get the chance to activate. I never get anywhere near to getting into windows. To compound the issue I can't boot into safe mode, it attempts to boot, but part way through loading the drivers it restarts without any error messages..I've flashed the CMOS by taking the battery out & putting it back in again & this made no difference.

I'm able to load the O/S partition using ubunthu & see no evidence of WPA_Reset5.I do NOT have any install CD's, the PC came pre-installed & I assume the OEM figured users will restore using PCAngel if required. It is a valid XP install with a valid prodID. If any of you know how I can bypass this state to get the system up & running.
