FOR SOME REASON BOTH THE RESTORE AND THE DEFRAG NO LONGER WORK, I CLICK ON THEIR ICONS AND THERE IS NO REACTION AT ALL NOT EVEN A BOX SAYING SOMETHING IS OUT OF WACK. I HAVE CHECKED AND THE SYSTEM RESTORE HAS NOT BEEN TURNED OFF, AND ALL THEIR FILES SEEM IN TACK IN SYSTEM32 ETC.

I get to select the point which I want to restore to, however when I select the continue / next button, nothing happens. Anyone have an idea as to what could be wrong? I've run anti-virus, anti-malware, (AVG, Malwarebites, Hijackthis) and I've re-installed things just in case a program may have erased it, my comp was last defragged 2 days ago.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Diskeeper 2007 Pro Premier for a free 30 day trial, decided I didn't want it, uninstalled it and now my XP Pro Defrag has ceased to work any longer.
I get some weird message that it can't initialize and that I must have downloaded a different version .
guess the two were fighting each other.
Point is, can I download MS Defrag as a stand alone (Googled but no luck) or do I have to reinstall XP all over again...
Also, is MS Defrag good enough are does Diskeeper do a better job for the averge home user?
When I try to open System Information, I get the message; 'Can't Collect Information.' A network error occurred in connecting to Windows Management
Instrumentation. Can this be fixed or do I have to reinstall XP? Also Defrag will not work and the Icon for Windows Update doesn't work.
Recently I found System Restore not working. It would neither restore to an earlier time nor create a new restore point. I tried doing a virus scan using Avast, rebooting, checking that it is (supposed to be) running and safe mode.Disconnecting from the Internet and turning off antivirus and firewall also made no difference. I also turned it off and on again. I noticed that initially it said it was monitoring drives C, D & E but after turning on again it only showed drives C & D. These drives are all partitions on my HD.On checking E I found that it had no file system and was advised to format it. On attempting this I got Format did not complete successfully.I also attempted to Defrag and got Disk Defragmenter could not start.

I reformatted my computer without WLM and defragging was not a problem, worked like a charm. So, I downloaded and installed WLM again, and lo and behold the same problem occurred, the defrag program would not defrag all the files. I uninstalled WLM and defrag process still wouldn't defrag all the files. How do I solve this problem of not being able to defrag all of my files without reformatting my computer.

So I uninstalled it and tried to download AVG 8.0 but it gave me some type of error#, which I put it in googles and found out I had registry problems. From there I found a free registry cleaner program, and once I installed it, I had over 1,000 problems. The cleaner, however, after cleaning 100 problems it was requesting an upgrade which requires to purchase the program. I did not want to purchase so I uninstalled it. Than I found myself clever and installed it again to erase another 100 errors. I did that about 8-9 times, and I had about 300 errors left to clean when I found out I could not open ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS anymore therefore I was unable to uninstall the program. View 9 Replies View RelatedI backed up all my files before I ran system recovery WITHOUT a CD on my Compaq Windows XP. Before I ran the recovery, I had only 9GB of space left. After the recovery all My Documents are gone, which is fine since I backed up them, but my HD still reads as only having 9GB of memory left. Can anyone help me fix this? I don't have the original CD my computer came with...is it possible to run a destructive system recovery without the CD?

My computer can no longer print. i cant reinstall my printer it always givers me a printer spooler error. i cant burn any cd's or dvd's anymore. It's an XP OS and I remember creating a restore point sometime over the summer. But now I go to System Restore and it doesn't show any restore points available except for these last few days after the crash (12/2/06). The furthest back it goes is a point on that Friday (12/2) at 6:11:23 PM called "System Checkpoint". But it gives me an error message after rebooting that says it was unable to restore it to that point and no changes have been made. Is there another way to restore my computer or access that earlier restore point?

I tried several restore points, all with the same message. The program went as far as -- collecting information, shutting down windows, user log on window appearing, and then the error messages. Another strange thing, I had several user accounts in my computer. Only in one user accout, when I do Start->All Programs-> Accessories-> System Restore, a full screen of system restore shows up with various restore points showing. All other user accounts, a blanck screen of system appeared (just the title-- system restore and nothing else).The reason I want to restore to a previous point is that after updating Verizon Yahoo 4 days ago, IE 7.0 showed problems in display the "flashes" in my home page, and I cannot print Eudora emails -- internet explorer script error. It seems to still be making automatic restore points periodically along with the ones that I create. However, I am unable to restore to any of the earlier time points. I am running Win XP service pack 2. I want to use system restore to a previous restoration point. The program ran somewhat--collecting information, shutting down windows, restarting, and welcome screen appearing. But when I tried to log on with my user account, it showed an error "cannot restore" to the point where I specified. Itried several earlier points with no success. Even when I tried to restore to the time just before the restoration process, I was not able to so either.

I turned OFF my pc manually... and when i restarted back my pc is working but there are problems.
-My system restore will open but it only has a clear white window.. nothing in it but white screen.
-I am not able to use the USERS window under control panel, getting the same thing for it, just a white window.
-My mcafee security program is also not working, getting that same white window.

I'm running Windows XP, but when I try to restore my system to a previous date it goes throught the motions, restarts fine and then tells me that it cannot restore to that date and that no changes have been made. I've tried various dates and get the same answer.

I have started to experience problems this started out being aload whinning noise that i have determined is either the hardrive or the a fan on the graphics card. I am worried that the harddrive is shot. The computer has started to tell me that there is a error speciffically "attribute seek error changes 100 to 200" so something is going on with the harddrive. I moved a couple of months back and am worried that the hardrive did not travel well. Also I have put in a new graphics card and wonder is it is producing much more heat. My sytem seems to be more and more unstable. I downloaded a trail versionof system mechanic and have used that to try and help but with little success. Every so often the computer would upon starting say that it had to check the Harddrive for systems intergity.

I have set Windows to set a restore point once a week, Restore my computer to an earlier time. Next screen "Select a restore point" does not display a calendar as it should. It displays a box reading "There are no restore points created for this day. To restore immediately, pick another day and restore point andtry again." But I do not see any previous restore points, no calendar.
