This is about my old dell machine, I have it booting from an even older HD of 20gigs. To day I tried it's origenal HD which is also a western digital of 40gigs. I tryed it to see if I could do a chkdsk /r on it. I pressed "r" and got to the concole, typed in the necessary.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an external HD 500GB (USB and eSata interface), originally formatted with NTFS on Vista, probably half used with files of all sizes (small / large). While connected via USB it crashed i.e. got corrupted somehow, and Windows was having trouble recognizing it (tried on Windows XP, Vista, 2k3 Server); Hence i tried the eSata interface, and upon bootup, Win2k3 detected errors, and prompted to run CHKDSK which i allowed it to. Note this is before it has loaded Win2k3 proper, and is running in cmd line mode.
Went thru the 3 stages really quickly (about 10 mins), after 3rd stage complete (security descriptors), next line says "Correcting Errors in the Upper Case File". And has been running for more than 5 days or 120 hours now (and counting)!! WTF? Few questions:.........
my system seems to always run chkdsk and below is the result.It states: Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS.Volume label is Presario.One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency.You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that it continue.Windows will now check the disk.
View 13 Replies View RelatedRecently when my computer boots, chkdsk starts running automatically. Thats ok. It does step 1 0f 3, great, does 2 of 3, however when it is doing step 3 of 3 its freezes at some percent over 50% and gives the following error:
"An Unspecified error has occured"
NOw everytime i reeboot my computer chkdsk runs and the same error occurs. I need chksdsk to complete its check because i dont want chkdsk to run at the beggining of every reboot it takes to long.
If I want to attach second hard disk with the same configuration of master hard disk, then system doesn't show second hard disk altogether or new hard disk begin to malfunction. Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.

View 4 Replies View RelatedFor a whole month now I have carefully set up the new notebook described below after successfully, but laboriously, running a 1997 Dell PII300-SCSI 128-SDRAM Win98SE system for 8 years. I've now reached a point where I need help on several issues from some of you who are far ahead of me when it comes to running a modern system. There are no major problems so far, just some minor performance issues and a few questions in areas in which I know little or nothing.
One instance of a freeze (when running Norton Speed Disk) which turned out to be a bad cluster and was repaired by ChkDsk. One instance of stalling @ the "windows is shutting down" window (shutdown only). There have been two instances of noticeable decline in peak performance: A.) after installing Norton System Works. I immediately uninstalled Go Back, which really helped, and B.) after replacing one of the installed 256mb sticks of RAM with a 1GB stick from Crucial. I only mention this because I deliberately delayed installation until maximium system performance had been consistently sustained. [This is nothing major, just a slight delay and/or menus briefly going blank when starting some programs and a slight delay in application reaction time, which usually manifests itself at the start of sessions, and late sluggishness in long sessions] I only mention this in the event that I'm wrong and can be corrected, because I believe this must be a coincidence and not due to the hardware (unless there is a setting or something in Windows that needs changing to accommodate the additional RAM) - and the solution to regaining peak performance lies in Windows and/or Norton System Works....

I have already tried right clicking on drive c and selecting format but the message says windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
So I closed all open programs that I could but still no luck. Then I tried the format from running the run command and typing format c:but I get this message format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format can run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n) so I type y for yes and hit enter then nothing
I upgraded my server, basically all I kept was the two hard drives from the old machine. The one hard drive is for the system files (~13GB) and the other is for storage, user files, etc (~160GB). I figured that then I reinstalled Windows 2000 Server on the System disk, I would just have to assign the other disk a drive letter and be on my way. Instead, in the disk management console, I get "Disk 1 [the 160GB) Dynamic Unreadable" I can revert to a basic disk, but it says I will lose all my information. It is imperative that the data on this disk be recovered.

Last week i installed windows XP Pro on my desktop. It has a 250GB hard drive which has 1 partition (C drive only), NTFS offcourse. I did not format it while installing windows as it has lots of stuff in it. There's over 50GB free and i�ve been removing a lot of stuff from the hard drive to make up some space but in windows i get an error message that i don't have enough disk space, the disk cleanup utility runs cant free up space and i can not install or copy anything in the hard drive. I've noticed that when i deleted some file holding (or not) the shift key the free size goes lower although the files are being deleted from the hard disk.

View 4 Replies View Relatedmy dad's hard drive crashed and so he has just bought another, now he needs to reinstall Windows XP Home but unfortunately he doesnt have a disk as its an HP machine and a disc was never supplied, the operating system was already on the computer and the option of making a recovery disc was available but he never actually undertook that option So he needs to get Windown back on his computer, he has the serial sticker on the side of his machine, he rang up HP and they said the machine is not in warranty - they cant send him a replacement disc

Anyway, it recently started getting an Low Disk Space warning (only 32mb free) for the D: Recovery Drive. I figured he had downloaded something/moved a file into it or something was logging to it. But it wouldn't even let me access the D: drive partition. I did the online chat with HP and it was full of bogus, straight from the manual answers.

The screen went crazy -- blue and white lines everywhere. I had to unplug and take out the battery to turn the computer off. After that, it would not boot up. The power light would come on, and I could hear the hard drive start up, but the screen would remain black and nothing else would occur.I sent the laptop in for repair. They replaced the mother board. I did not have any further problems and everything ran super smooth.Until about 3 days ago, when, quite suddenly, it started to act funky. I first noticed it when I tried to listen to music or play any kind of video. The video was and continues to be slightly sluggish, and in both audio and video, there is a noticeable static-like sound, especially when I try to scroll on a page ... or blink at it, really. I also got one blue screen. Mmm, those are fun (also my first with this computer).It continued to hate me after the blue screen, so I rebooted again. Which took forever. "Windows is shutting down." would stare at me, for seemingly an eternity. I knew when I got the machine that it had a fairly slow shut down and boot up, but this was ridiculous. Boot up, of course, wasn't any better.

As for the win2000 i changed the registry for 48 bit LBA support in order to see my 320gb drive. The reason why I ask is because I'm planning to purchase a 750gb or 1tb external hard drive to backup my system. I don't want to purchase it to find that the system can only see 500gb or something like that. I'm gonna post this same post in the winMe area.

The bios is correct, and the cd is in there etc. It says press any key to boot, and i do.It detects some stuff then restarts and loads into my desktop Doesnt do anything.
