my system seems to always run chkdsk and below is the result. It states: Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS.Volume label is Presario. One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that it continue.Windows will now check the disk.
I have an external HD 500GB (USB and eSata interface), originally formatted with NTFS on Vista, probably half used with files of all sizes (small / large). While connected via USB it crashed i.e. got corrupted somehow, and Windows was having trouble recognizing it (tried on Windows XP, Vista, 2k3 Server); Hence i tried the eSata interface, and upon bootup, Win2k3 detected errors, and prompted to run CHKDSK which i allowed it to. Note this is before it has loaded Win2k3 proper, and is running in cmd line mode.
Went thru the 3 stages really quickly (about 10 mins), after 3rd stage complete (security descriptors), next line says "Correcting Errors in the Upper Case File". And has been running for more than 5 days or 120 hours now (and counting)!! WTF? Few questions:.........
This is about my old dell machine, I have it booting from an even older HD of 20gigs. To day I tried it's origenal HD which is also a western digital of 40gigs. I tryed it to see if I could do a chkdsk /r on it. I pressed "r" and got to the concole, typed in the necessary.
Chkdsk runs at startup due to me resizing and shifting my NTFS partition to the left. Running "fsutil dirty query C:" returns the message: Volume - C: is Dirty. I know this problem can be solved by running chkdsk but I also know from prior experience that it will cause a lot of problems. I'm not having any problems. Windows XP is running very fast and works just fine. I just know from experience that if I allow chdsk to run that it will mess with my OS.At boot it gives me the option of not allowing chkdsk to run, which I don't. Is there anyway that I can disable chkdsk from running at boot?
CHKdsk runs on startup for my C drive. 43% of the way through step 1 a "blue screen error" flashes on the screen and my computer reboots. This would continue but it fortunately gives me a step to skip chkdsk. Unfortunately the error message flashes by too quick for me to read. I have tried going into event viewer, looking under application and trying to find winlogon but it does not seem to be there. There also does not seem to be any entries under application, security or system for todays date. How can a view this error message? My computer otherwise works fine but I wonder if there's an impending problem... I am using a 1.6 ghz dell with Windows XP
Recently when my computer boots, chkdsk starts running automatically. Thats ok. It does step 1 0f 3, great, does 2 of 3, however when it is doing step 3 of 3 its freezes at some percent over 50% and gives the following error:
"An Unspecified error has occured"
NOw everytime i reeboot my computer chkdsk runs and the same error occurs. I need chksdsk to complete its check because i dont want chkdsk to run at the beggining of every reboot it takes to long.
I want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.
There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.
If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.
The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.
If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.
I would like to accomplish this:
1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.
2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.
3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.
Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?
To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.
Win XP Home edition. I'm in the Speed Up Windows Startup class. I currently have a very long list of startup programs running. Is it safe for me to disable all except security programs (Symantec Norton,AdAware,Spyguard)?Charles
My PC seems to be slow starting up so this is what MSCONFIG shows in startup. Are there any that can safely be 'unchecked' ? Is that the correct way to stop them runing at startup?
Can anyone throw any light on my computers startup problems? 1.6Athlon 512mg 20gig HDD rock?motherboard running legit XP Home with SP2. HDD less than half full, defrag shows not necessary. The computer starts ok but at some point in the process, it varies, it will freeze/lock and will not unlock and has to be rebooted, which in itself may not happen at the first or even second attempt. This gosz on about four times, freezing at different points, and can even be after I have successfully used the computer for 5 or 10 minutes. Eventually it will boot up and run without a problem.
Frequently on shut down I see a message that says hpqimzone.exe is not responding and I have to click on "End Now" to continue with shutown. I did some researching and found out that this process belongs to HP Photosmart Premier. This seemed confusing to me at first because the shutdown isssue occurs even when I don't run the program. After some more examinations I found out that I have two items that seem to run on startup, one is called Adobe Reader Speed Launch and the other is HP Photosmart Premier Fast Start. They are in a Startup folder - file path: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart Menu Programs Startup. Are these critical components of startup and, if not, how do I stop them from running at startup? Would deleting the shortcuts do the trick?
when i start my computer, it takes forever to load, and theres always SO many programs running, some that i have no idea what they are on the task manager, and also ones that just come on that i dont even use, how do i make them not run at start up?
I used to use a web site that you could cross reference items that ran at startup to determine if they were required, optional, or otherwise. This site does not seem to be working currently and am looking for some alternative.
XP made it more confusing with what you can/should/don't need to run. what's the difference between what's in your Startup and what's in Services running and what would be safe/not safe to either delete or close?
I've got windows XP and want to stop some things running when I boot windows. I've tried running MSCONFIG and un-ticking programs in the startup tab. Next time I boot the same programs still load. When I looked in MSCONFIG again the programs were un-ticked, but if I scroll down they have all appeared again ticked. Can anyone help me cause I've got some pretty pointless things starting that slow my PC down?
Almost everytime when iam starting my laptop, its running chkdsk(see attachment), which takes about 5-7 minutes.I recently removed bitdefender antivirus and installed AVG as the earlier one had slowed my system. Also, to clean the registry i download RegSupreme Software from macecraft, could it be the culprit?
Although I am running Windows ME I could not find a group listed for that OS so I assumed that for this problem XP is comparable(?). The problem is that for some reason on startup my computer wants the run scandisk. There seems o be a problem with scandisk because about three-quarters of the way throught the sacn it locks up. If I cancel the scandisk my computer seems to be acting OK but if I don't hover over the computer on startup I have to do a hard reboot
Computer is all of a sudden very slow. When I did a computer check for information regarding software, I found that many strange software files run automatically at startup. When I checked "msconfig", I only found 24 programs starting at startup which were normal. How do I eliminate these strange files. I don't know which one of these are necessary and I don't know how to eliminate them. They appear as "unknown". One example of a startup file is "zipfldr". There are pages of other ones.
I know this operation is needed for some parts of Windows to function, but it sounds like a Trojan can also use this file to slow your computer. Norton 2005 says it doesn't seem to be harming my sysetm, but my stsem has seemed to be slowing lately. Also, on my Ctrl + Alt + Delete it says rundll32.exe is running at startup. Should it be running at startup, and how do I know if I have the Trojan or not?
So basically the computer I'm on was loaded with spyware so I decided to use Spybot to get rid of it. After running it it told me I needed to reboot to remove the rest of the spyware so I did. I got to the windows login screen and after logging into my screen I'm immediately met with a blue screen that flashes for about half a second and then goes to restart the computer. The only way that I can actually get into windows without it crashing is by logging in with safe mode.
I recently installed and then uninstalled Symantec PC Anywhere. However, when I start windows now I get an error message from Symantec PCAnywhere Update utility telling me that the program is not installed locally so the updater won't run.How do I remove this updater and stop it from trying to run at Windows startup? I've heard of running MSCONFIG from Start -> Run... but that doesn't seem to work on XP.
I have performance problems with my pc, it takes too much time to start and the PC ussage is constatly at near 100% with any program, for example, playing a video or starting word. I have run several anti-virus, and spyware programs, but no solution yet.
I am running an 2.2gh Athlon 64 with Media Center 2005 and a gig of Ram and an integrated 200x Raedon mobo. The system idle process is at 99-80 percent most of the time. However, at the bottom it says I'm running around 75-100% and when I go to the graph it shows really high as well. I just reformatted my enitre drive via recovery disc to try to fix this. (Also and i didnt want to try to uninstall the beta 2 of vista so it wasnt for the sole purpose of fixing the percent thing) I dont have a duel boot anymore and it has ran this way since the start AND since the reformat. Too bad i didnt notice this when i bought it.
I get a directcd warning telling me that it will cause windows to be come unstable and also gives me a link to roxio systems "within a bubble" that comes up every time I boot the system. I tried to look in my setup folder or any where else I thought it could be by doing a scan but no good. it's just annoying, it's got to be comming from some where? it turns out that to make the warning disapear I'd have to purchase the particular roxio softwear and it's not really what I want to do. any suggestions as to where to look?
I have run virus scan, Adaware and Spybot and nothing is found yet the computer runs slow. Statup takes a long time and while it is loading things the firewall disables until after everything in startup loads. Lately I have had problems when docking my iPod. It just undocks on it's own and nothing is touching it or the cable connecting it to the computer. I ran Hijack this but no sure how to interpret it. I am running Windows 2k pro on a Compaq Presario.
This has happened two days in a row now. I log into my account, then when it gets to my desktop, all it shows is my desktop background picture. There are no applications running and there are no startup icons that I can click on. I have to force a restart on my laptop, and then when it starts up again everything is there.
Everytime I launch an IE window (v6.0.2900) a SVCHOST.EXE process starts and uses 100% of the CPU. If I kill the process all is fine until I start another IE instance or window.I have tried replacing SVCHOST.EXE in c:windowssystem32 with no luck and I have also run the MD DIAGS to see if they had any suggestion
My laptop w/ windows xp runs fine except all the sudden all my pictures and part of some graphics starting having me go to graphics scheme make the changes.once I do..fine. but everytime i re-boot all the changes have disappeared and i have to all again?? I've spent twenty hours and every possible combination and i can't keep the settings. The only thing i have done recently was download windows updates wich say xp office? So i dont know why they said i needed them.
My computer will boot up and sit at the desktop all day if I don't do anything. even opens an image file I have on the desktop but that's about it. If I try to start any program, the computer just reboots without any error mesage or warning. Not sure what to do here, I have ZoneAlarm, Norton, Spysweeper, AdAware, Spysweeper, and Spybot Search and Destroy and check my PC often so a virus seems unlikely but you never know I guess. I was playing an online game (World of Warcraft) when the first reboot occured and can't do anything since.
