Chkdsk Runs At Startup
Sep 7, 2008
Chkdsk runs at startup due to me resizing and shifting my NTFS partition to the left. Running "fsutil dirty query C:" returns the message: Volume - C: is Dirty. I know this problem can be solved by running chkdsk but I also know from prior experience that it will cause a lot of problems. I'm not having any problems. Windows XP is running very fast and works just fine. I just know from experience that if I allow chdsk to run that it will mess with my OS.At boot it gives me the option of not allowing chkdsk to run, which I don't. Is there anyway that I can disable chkdsk from running at boot?

I've recently formatted my HD and run Partition Magic to create 5 partitions but now every time I reboot, CHKDSK runs to check each drive, but doesn't find any problems. My drives and labels are as follows; O.S.(C), DVD Drive(D), DVD/CD-RW(E), Data(F), Games(G), Video(H), Music(I). I'm running twin WD 250 GB HD in a RAID 1 configuration. 30 GB dedicated to (C) and the rest are split to contain between 50 to 60 GB. I've also adjusted the cluster size to 16K. File system is NTFS and os is Win XP Pro. I haven't installed any antivirus or firewall because I'm not connected to the internet yet. Also no progs running on startup. This is a fresh HD with nothing installed except os and drivers. Partitioning was fairly easy and straight-forward so I'm really scratching my head to figure out what is wrong.

Every time I open Windows XP, I get a message saying "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" Then it runs a chkdsk. It reports no errors and opens as usual. Then if I try to defrag the disk that is checked, I get a message saying Diskeeper has detected that CHKDSK is scheduled to run. This is due to a user request or because the Operating System has found errors in the file system.I have run Chkdsk on this drive, but no errors have been found.I have not scheduled Chkdsk to run on this drive. If I then try to reboot, the same procedure occurs again and check disk does not report any errors.

Whenever I reboot CHKDSK runs weather I have told it to or not.A previous hard drive was failing on this PC. I had Norton Ghost making images on another HD. So when it failed, I was able to make that backup HD the Boot drive.I think that maybe while the old drive was failing, some data was corrupted. Because during the CHKDSK process,

Hi, Somehow my daughters computer is stuck rebooting. When you start it up chkdsk attempts to run and if you hit any key in the allowed time period it does not just skip chkdsk as it has in the past, it continues to reboot again and again. Even if you let the chkdsk utility run it just reboots when its finished and we're back to square one. How do we disable chkdsk or Autochk.exe if that's what is happening and will this solve the problem maybe?

When I set CHKDSK to run at next restart, it does NOT display the usual CHKDSK text interface with the runnning progress of the operation. Instead it runs while displaying the Windows Logo screen, not with a running progress bar like ususal though. The logo screen color pallette freezes until CHKDSK is done, then the machine reboots like normal. What happened to my CHKDSK text display? This also happens when I set Diskeeper 7.0 to run at boot time. Instead of the Diskeeper text display, it does the same thing as CHKDSK. Any ideas?

Today when booting up the pc, chkdsk autostarts (it usually doesn't..) but it hangs in the same place each time.I'm running XP (updated), but not in English, so the quotes are translated as accuratly as I can: It first confirms files (step 1 of 3) It then confirms index(?) (2 of 3) It then says "Correcting error in index $I30 for the file 106330" (twice)And then "sorting index $ I30 in file 106330" Then it just stand like that (waited 3 hrs). There is no sort of "work noise" or lights from the machine, just the fans.. I've tried restarting a few times, but no difference. The only thing I did yesterday that might have had this kind of effect is installing Gimp, but I can't see how.

I'm a college student; majoring in computer systems engineering technology. Classes don't start for spring until the end of the week, so I can't have my professors help me, so I'm using fourms to fix my problem. Here it is:I'm currently working on a Dell Inspirion 1501, AMD 64x Dual Core, 1GB RAM, 100 GB HDD, Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP2.The original problem was a registry error message that was coming up at startup, and Internet Explorer 7 would not load the Internet even though everything with the Local Area Connection was fine. These problems were fixed by: Uninstalling Internet Explorer 7, and running TuneUp2008, which has a registry cleaner, which fixed several problems. Everything seemed to work fine after this; up until I attempted to use Spyware Blaster and Ad-Aware. The computer was not allowing them to access the internet.Checked the Windows Firewall, and added the programs to the exceptions list, still nothing.
Then I realized that they had Norton Internet Security 2006 installed, so figuring that it was the Norton firewall blocking those programs I attempted to open Norton. The program would not open, and would freeze. After several unsuccessful attempts to uninstall Norton, (I was recieving some error message aboue being logged into Norton as an Admin user, but since Norton would not open, I could not do this) I found the solution on the internet, a file from Symtematec, I ran it, and it said that it would be completely uninstalled after the next restart, so I restarted.
Since I restarted from uninstalling Norton, Chkdsk runs at every startup. First it runs a 3-stage check, finds no problems, then reboots. At the next reboot, chkdsk will run again, this time with a 5-stage check. After hours and hours of chkdsk just repeatedly running on a loop, I attempted to boot in safe mode, which was unsuccessful. I'm also not able to boot into Last Known Good Config, it just starts the chkdsk again. The only thing I AM able to do, is run the WinXP CD at bootup and run the recovery console, but I'm not sure what I need to be fixing or doing within the Recovery Console.

WIN XP Pro SP3 (+NortonSecurity2009) Two days ago & ongoing: On BootUp CHKDSK NTSF started running automatically on Blue Screen every time I turn on the computer. "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" and proceeds to check C: for 'Files' 'Indexes' and 'Security Descriptors.' (command line 'parameters' are needed for all these) Then Windows boots up normally. When I went to defrag I was not allowed to proceed because of CHKDSK and something about damaged files. Where did this CHKDSK automatic behavior come from & what is it doing? Is my disk corrupted? Will all my files get eaten from the inside out? (BTW-this "DUMMIE" [me] has NO backup) At the Very Same Time - My Norton Anti-Virus became Completely Disabled. An icon appeared on my desktop where I've not had one before - but I cannot access the program from there, from Start-AllPrograms, or even from C:ProgramFiles, open, run. Nothing. The System-Tray Norton icon is gone too! Tried to download a quick, free good antivirus program for right-now protection: AVG and/or Avast - both failed. My behind is hanging in the breeze. (hoping that Windows little Virus Protection & the Firewall will do ok short-term) I've run Malwarebytes, Spy-Bot, & Terminator, but those aren't AntiVirus. HELP! These issues look like maybe 2 separate problems? Maybe not. Has something really bad gotten in? I'm really stuck! Is CHKDSK the priority if there is corruption of the HD, or is AV the priorty? Seems like I can't do either.Should I run Registry Mechanic, assuming all the responses are true and clean-sweep it? Last time I tried, System Restore didn't work,

CHKdsk runs on startup for my C drive. 43% of the way through step 1 a "blue screen error" flashes on the screen and my computer reboots. This would continue but it fortunately gives me a step to skip chkdsk. Unfortunately the error message flashes by too quick for me to read. I have tried going into event viewer, looking under application and trying to find winlogon but it does not seem to be there. There also does not seem to be any entries under application, security or system for todays date. How can a view this error message? My computer otherwise works fine but I wonder if there's an impending problem...
I am using a 1.6 ghz dell with Windows XP

It takes up to 15 minutes to start up when you first turn it on. Often takes up to 20 seconds for programs to come up when you hit start. Virtually all software programs take time to come up, even little ones like Notepad. Have lots of slowdowns and freeze ups when using the internet, including trying to type in url's. Anytime the computer isn't in use for a little while, starting up again is always very slow with frequent little freeze ups. Lately, even when we first turn the computer on, we get a low on virtual memory warning in the lower right corner. Somebody told me this could be the problem. If so, why would it need more memory now than in the past when it worked ok?We actually deleted lots of files and some software programs not be used, including video games. We used Spybot, Malwarebytes and our anti virus program a few days back and all 3 came up with no problems.

I have windows xp and all previous service packs have been installed thru automatic update. However when trying to install SP 3 using windows update it fails to install. I have then gone to the Microsoft website and downloaded SP3 and tried to load it from my desktop. It will go thru the installation and when it gets to the finish stage it seems to stall. I have left it run for over 1 hour with out it finishing, I have both tried to shut down andnormally and also hold the on button to turn the computer off. Windows will then only start in the safe mode. In the safe mode I can go back to a previous date and restore settings and re-start in the normal mode.

Okay, I have this laptop with Vista Home Premium that I just can't stand stand anymore. I decided to try to install XP pro on it. I partitioned off a part of the HDD to store data backups and proceded with wiping Vista off the primary partition and went ahead to installing XP. When trying to install XP pro SP2 it got all the way to the partition setup and it did not read the HDD at all. If I press enter anyway I get a BSOD that has a setupdd.exe error. I have researched this error and it seems to relate to hardware incompatibility. I tried installing XP pro with the service pack 3 beta slipstreamed in and had the same problem. I also tried Black XP and it would not even boot from the disk. Then as a last resort I tried installing LastXP and it seemed to have alot better luck. It read the HDD and started installing but it always fails to copy the file "iastor75.sys" and after clicking "skip" it finishes the setup and reboots to another BSOD. I have no idea what iastor75.sys is. I have tried google searches and found nothing conclusive.
BTW my laptop is a Gateway MT6730.
I really really really want XP on this computer. Do you guys think that if I slipstreamed in some chipset and HDD drivers onto the XP disk it would work?
Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated.

My hard drive keeps running for about 15 minutes after each start up. It seems to be reading or writing something. I have Norton Antivirus 2005 fully updated. I know it isn`t that program running. How can I find out what is running on my hard drive after each start up? I understand that programs start up when you start Windows XP but all programs and my desktop are already loaded and then my hard drive just keeps running as if it is loading something but nothing seems to load. It runs for 15 minutes erratically after windows and my programs start. Must be a way to monitor what the hard drive is doing when this happens. Any suggestions?

Scenario:
I had a computer that dual boots 98 and XP. Everything was working well
except I had a problem with the hard drive light coming on all the time
when running XP.
I decided to upgrade so I built me another faster computer and moved all
the hard drives to the new one. I did a repair install of both operating
systems to get the drivers right. And it's working fine and faster. BUT,
I am having the same problem with the hard drive light in XP. When I
first boot up and everything settles down, the light goes out. After
about 15 minutes, it starts flickering a little. By the end of a half
hour it is on constantly. Indexing is turned off on all drives. Task
manager shows nothing running that I don't recognize. Idle process is 98-
99%. I've gone into services and stopped every service that's stoppable,
one at a time. None of them made it stop. If I reboot into Windows 98 and
let it sit, the light stays out. I'd like to think it's a hardware
problem and that the drive really isn't running but the light is on. But
now that it's doing the same thing on a second computer and it doesn't do
it in Windows 98, I know that *something* is accessing one of the drives.
I have unplugged my ethernet cable. It isn't that. I have done a
diagnostic startup with nothing but essential files loading but it still
does it. If I boot into XP's Safe Mode, the light will stay out. So it is
just happening in XP in normal mode, no matter what I have running or
don't.
Any suggestions what to look for now? Is there any app available that
would show what is accessing hard drives?

My floppy (A: drive) runs intermittently when my PC is on. Here is what I have come up with so far. This started after I reformatted and reinstalled XP Pro. During the reinstallation I did not use the floppy for anything so it is not hanging and waiting for a file. I have checked my registry for any reference to the floppy. I have uninstalled NAV and MS Office and it still happens. I have not made any changes in my BIOS. It boots into the hard drive first. I have cleaned out the recent documents file area. I have checked my startup folder. Sometime it will access the drive while surfing in IE and clicking to another web page. Just clicking the "My Computer" icon will make it run. I have Googled and tried everything I can find and the problem persist. Any thoughts? Thanks

I have a problem that has haunted my computer for a couple of years now. If/when I suffer a power loss at home and my computer goes down unexpectedly, this problem is most likely to occur. When I power the thing back up, it seems to be fine but if I let it sit idle for an hour or so, the hard drive starts running full blast and it won't stop. It brings everything to a halt and even if I try to open a program or a webpage, it takes several minutes. I have had task manager open when this lockup occurs and the CPU shows to be doing little or nothing. The hard drive light doesn't flicker like during startup, it's on solid. The only thing I can do to stop it is a hard reboot. This problem eventually works itself out after a few days or a couple of weeks...until the power goes out again. I have ran two different anti-virus', spyware, and come up with nothing. None of the processes in the task manager seem to be out of the ordinary. I have tried to defrag but Windows says it is not needed at this time. If I try to defrag anyway, it locks up after a while, hard drive spinning way. I'm not too techie so the fix needs to be simple, or give me a way to stop the HD without rebooting.

The main issue is that as soon as I connect to the internet, it takes about 10 minutes for me to be able to do anything. Before the connection is established, the system is normal. After connecting, I can't open any programs, or even task manager or control panel. After about 10 minutes, everything opens and seems to run normal, but still a bit slow. If I disconnect and try to log off or shut down while waiting for IE to open, it freezes the computer and I have to manually shut down. I do go through the task manager and shut down everything that I can before signing on to the internet and it does not make any difference.
