Cant Install On A Computer That Runs Vista
Mar 22, 2008
Okay, I have this laptop with Vista Home Premium that I just can't stand stand anymore. I decided to try to install XP pro on it. I partitioned off a part of the HDD to store data backups and proceded with wiping Vista off the primary partition and went ahead to installing XP. When trying to install XP pro SP2 it got all the way to the partition setup and it did not read the HDD at all. If I press enter anyway I get a BSOD that has a setupdd.exe error. I have researched this error and it seems to relate to hardware incompatibility. I tried installing XP pro with the service pack 3 beta slipstreamed in and had the same problem. I also tried Black XP and it would not even boot from the disk. Then as a last resort I tried installing LastXP and it seemed to have alot better luck. It read the HDD and started installing but it always fails to copy the file "iastor75.sys" and after clicking "skip" it finishes the setup and reboots to another BSOD. I have no idea what iastor75.sys is. I have tried google searches and found nothing conclusive.
BTW my laptop is a Gateway MT6730.
I really really really want XP on this computer. Do you guys think that if I slipstreamed in some chipset and HDD drivers onto the XP disk it would work?
Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated.

Recently cleaned up a friend's very infected machine. The jury is still out as to how much damage was done (specifically to the registry), but something weird is going on. When I right click the C drive in My Computer, the EZ CD Creator 5 install program starts executing. I didn't see a autorun.inf file or on the drive which is the only thing I can think of. Any ideas?
Figured I'd add some more info. I've installed a second drive to take backups to. Backup of 12G of data to the drive while the OS was up took 1.5 hours, took much less from an emergency disk, weird. XP SP2 256K memory. I'm also getting a windowformsparkingwindow popup on a shutdown. Reasonably sure this is due to HP stuff on the machine. Java is busted up but I wanted to start getting the backups going before uninstalling that and reinstalling.

It takes up to 15 minutes to start up when you first turn it on. Often takes up to 20 seconds for programs to come up when you hit start. Virtually all software programs take time to come up, even little ones like Notepad. Have lots of slowdowns and freeze ups when using the internet, including trying to type in url's. Anytime the computer isn't in use for a little while, starting up again is always very slow with frequent little freeze ups. Lately, even when we first turn the computer on, we get a low on virtual memory warning in the lower right corner. Somebody told me this could be the problem. If so, why would it need more memory now than in the past when it worked ok?We actually deleted lots of files and some software programs not be used, including video games. We used Spybot, Malwarebytes and our anti virus program a few days back and all 3 came up with no problems.

My computer starts going really slow after about 11:00-12:00 PM-AM (Programs take forever to start/open and games take about 20 minutes to load.) until i wake up (About 10-11:45 AM ). Anywho I was wondering if there is any thing I can do to help my computer run fast for 24/7, give or take.Just to let you know I'm Not that good with technical stuff, so if there's any that would be difficult for a noob you'll have to explain slowly.

I have read tons of stuff and tried loads of stuff and yes you guessed it nothing has sorted it out.
My computer knowledge isnt great so if this requires Bios work or Command prompts i will need some detailed help.

For some reason my windows update (wuauclt.exe) file has decided to run 24 hours a day. This means that it is using 99% of my computer resources. I have
run virus and spyware and nothing, I have deleted the file that seems to be causing the problem, but it always comes back on restart.

A few weeks ago I decided to try messing around with the RAM. I took out the last stick and the computer, yet again, seemed to work perfectly… for a week at least (enough time for me to assume it was fixed). The problems persisted. Note that by now not only did I have bsod problems but simple problems like browsers not being able to open, programs crashing at a very high rate, windows unable to shut down, etc. (these reasons made me decide to start experimenting with the RAM) After RAM stick #4 did not work, I started switching out ram (to no avail) And just yesterday I took them all out and put only two in, so I am running 2 gigs memory
Last night, my computer seemed to run fine, I got my hopes up yet again. This morning my comp bsod’d. After waiting an hour, I turned my computer back on and now I have a constant “Microsoft windows, the system has recovered from a serious error” error report sending thing, which no matter how many times I click don’t send or send it will pop up again. I have moved it to the corner of my screen to write this. I believe I may have had this problem before and just restarted to fix it, but I am not sure.

I've got an old msi K7N2G-L board/computer and it's got an old WD1200JB installed and running xp. The problem is that it boots and runs slow as molasses, I'm talking like 10 mins to get it to the log in screen and opening apps takes a good 2-3mins before opening too. If I run a defrag on the drive, things temp speed back up to normal, but as soon as I reboot, it's slow again. If I run the defrag again, everything's cool and speeds go back to normal. So I'm guessing that there's some HD corruption on this drive (at least 5yrs old) and it keeps writing system files to the bad sections of this old HD when it's booting. I've run various fdisks, but none of them reveal any errors. (I should mention that I'm diligently proactive on Antivirus', firewall and Spyware practices, so that's definitely not an option relating to the old drive's slowness.) I've scanned with Avira, Nod32, Kaspersky, Trojansuperantispyware, and checked hijack this entries, there's nothing detected or unusual. Of course, I don't have all of these installed at once.I decided to try and swap the drive out and reinstall xp on this system using a newer WD3200 drive (that I use as a storage drive on one of my other computers.) I run the xp installer, successfully quick format the 3200 partition to NTFS, and everything proceeds fine and fast(keep in mind the 3200 drive was used to store data on my newer comp and was already formatted to ntfs.) Unfortunately, after it successfully finishes the initial install, it gives me the 15 second reboot warning. Okay, I let it reboot, but instead of continuing the install after the reboot, the system hangs on "Verifying DMI Pool Data" and that's it. Nothing happens and I am unable to finish the installation. I tried this like 10 times with 2 different XP home's and I keep getting the same problem. When I go into Bios, the drive is recognized as a 3200/automatic settings? I can't see why xp installs fine on the old WD1200, but not on the WD3200.

I've recently ran into an opportunity to install 64-bit windows XP. I can't really get Vista at the moment, so I'm considering this. Google has been vague on it, and most of the articles that I've read say that it's a bad idea. Granted they were published in 2005.

How does one begin troubleshooting an application that appears to install correctly but fails to start in Windows XP ?I am trying to install the same application on two nearly identical Windows XP workstations. The application (Maxon NET render) installs and runs fine on computer A. On computer B, however, after the application appears to install without error it simply does not start. Clicking the application shortcuts or the executable itself causes the computer to think for a moment, the mouse icon turns into a spinning hourglass for a few seconds, then nothing happens.

1st I use internet explorer for my web browser. At work when I click on it it pops right up with out even thinking about it Page loads with in 10 seconds every time. At home. Some times it will take 30 seconds to a minute to start after I click on it.2nd issue is this Occasionally I will come into my computer after not using it for 8-10 hours or so and I will have a ton (sometimes 40+) Error messages that say "unable to launch restart.exe".I can close all of them but then the computer runs like a tank. I always have to do a hard shut down after this too.It will NOT restart using the proper methods just hangs up.

It said something about the battery driver not being compatible, I clicked "No" but it turned off, I clicked "Yes" but it turned off

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 531 about a year or so ago for my wife. It came with Vista pre-installed. Everything was fine except that my wife kept complaining about the speed compared to my pc running XP. So, I checked the web to see if uninstalling Vista would be a problem and mostly I found that it was doable. So, I downloaded the necessary nVidia drivers and I was off. I unistalled Vista, reformated the HD and reinstalled XP Home SP1a (a purchased copy) so everything went just fine, at least so I thought. I now get frequent shutdowns and reboots. Some programs will not install properly (such as MS Office 2003)- word will open sometimes and sometimes I get errors saying that the program could not open for various reasons. I use Avira anti-virus and it has problems updating.

Dell Dimension E520.The machine came with Vista but it doesn't work with any of the applications that we need. We just went out and dropped the wad of cash on Windows XP and resized the hard drive with the Vista Disk Management. When we boot into the WinXP cd, it loads all the drivers etc but when it gets to "Starting Windows XP" screen at the end of the driver loading (no graphics yet), it suddenly bluescreens and says to check for a virus or run a checkdisk. We tried this a number of times and its not working.Due to the fact that nothing is set yet for installation, the WinXP disk should _not_ be even yet touching the hard disk, just loading into RAM. The machine is new and has 2GB of RAM on it, more than enough for an XP install.Does anyone know what could be the issue? I am wondering if we have to find/install additional drivers at the initial XP disk loading, but I am not sure.

i swapped the motherboard from my pc which was running vista to our older pc which is running xp not only that but i put a new 300gig drive in the xp machine and was planning to clean install xp again however it wont let me boot into xp setup it gets to the first screen you know where its preparing setup files etc.. then after that i get the blue screen with the error 0x0000007B, the hard drive is being detected and all should work fine i have removed everything from the motherboard but the bare essentials, and the interesting thing is when i run the vista install cd it gets to the setup steps without a hitch so im wondering does vista affect something on the motherboard when it has been previously installed which prevents xp from being installed again? and if so how do i reset it back to factory condition, i have already tried resetting cmos to defaults,

I bought a new Dell one week too late to get it delivered with XP, and am now the proud owner of a system with Vista Home Premium. But I'm more familiar with XP, it's what I use at work, and I'd like to benefit from the years of wisdom and optimization that have gone into a mature operating system. So I also bought a copy of XP Pro SP2, and am trying to wipe Vista and install XP. But when I boot from the XP Install CD, it gets through loading drivers, then to "Starting Windows", then crashes to bluescreen. This happens before I can get to safe mode or anything.

Using a Toshiba Satellite 1800 Laptop 1GHz Intel P3 - BIOS Ver 1.90 04/18/2002.
The past week or two it seems that the computer locks up, the Task Manager shows the CPU running at 100%. It allows some activity all be it slow & shutting down all programs (which are not locked up) does not stop the activity - including disconnecting the internet. Have run Norton scan, Spybot S&D and Adaware with nothing of significance found. Ran HiJackThis and found some startup stuff and stopped them from running but I don't know enough about the programs that are running to remove them.
Last time I booted I had to force a shutdown after waiting for 15 minutes. Next reboot took 22 minutes for the CPU to back off of 100%. I started Task Mgr very early into the boot, just before the icons started to appear and it showed 33 processes running. I watched as 14 more started up all while the CPU was steady at 100% usage. Then at 5 minutes after booting the processor dropped to 50% bounced around for a minute then went back to 100%. There was some activity through the modem (cable) but not very much. I unplugged the modem power. I shut down Skype, MSN Messenger and MS Defender and about a minute later the CPU dropped to 27%. Nothing of what I shut down appeared to alter anything.
I hope someone can see something...
Here is my latest HiJackThis log

i read a very similar problem on this forum searching for a clue to get xp running. i recently bought a gateway GM5478, http://www.gateway.com/retail/gm5478.php that came pre-loaded with vista, some programs that i need to run now aren't compatible with it yet so i need to downgrade. i've tried using nLite to create a xp boot disc with the drivers integrated but it failed twice, resulting in the same blue screen error. the drivers im trying to use are:
ive also thought about purchasing a usb external floppy but i read that only three types are accepted during the xp install process and i couldn't find any of them online.

I'm trying to make a dual boot system Vista/XP with my HP Media Center purchased in 2007 with Vista pre-installed. Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista
Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:?
Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation?
Thank you,
Al

I originally had Vista Business edition on my laptop and decided to dual boot with XP. So far I created a partition on the same drive (C: ) as Vista and installed XP on it. how do I choose between Vista and XP when my computer boots up? When I turn on my computer it boots straight into XP and doesn't show that menu where it gives me a choice of which OS I want to boot
