Install Over Vista With SATA - Drivers On External USB HD?
Mar 9, 2008
I want to replace Vista with XP however my laptop has a SATA HD. I know that I can create a boot disk on either a floppy or a CD however I think it should be possible for me to install the drivers on an external USB HD? Before I format my drive I just wanted to confirm that this is possible?
i read a very similar problem on this forum searching for a clue to get xp running. i recently bought a gateway GM5478, http://www.gateway.com/retail/gm5478.php that came pre-loaded with vista, some programs that i need to run now aren't compatible with it yet so i need to downgrade. i've tried using nLite to create a xp boot disc with the drivers integrated but it failed twice, resulting in the same blue screen error. the drivers im trying to use are:
ive also thought about purchasing a usb external floppy but i read that only three types are accepted during the xp install process and i couldn't find any of them online.
when i first installed windows and what not i had a floppy drive installed.i need to do a windows repair and to do so i need to install these external sata drivers for my hard drives.i do not have access to a floppy drive and i would like to know if there was anyway to get around using the floppy drive to install these drivers one question i had was would i be able to change the drive letter of one of my dvd drives to A so that windows will install from there instead of an obsolete floppy drive A.
But I wanted to know how do I install Windows XP operating system on my external hard drive. I am currently running Windows Vista Premium on my desktop. Please advise me regarding this question.
I just bought me a new SATA 250GB Hard Drive and a external hard drive enclosure. I received the items today and I just realize the hard drive enclosure doesn't build into the way to connect to the SATA 7-pin data connector. All it has is the Parallel ATA 40-pin data connector. Can anyone recommend any external hard drive enclosure that can connect to SATA connector directly. And there is a main reason why I choose a SATA hard drive.
Currenlty got an issue where i have a user who wants to dual boot with Vista and XP using sata disks. The general rule of thumb when doing dualbooting is to install the oldest operating system first, and then gradually work your way up.The way it will be setup is as so Vista - Primary partition of the 1st disk XP - Primary partition of the 2nd disk. Now, The way i was thinking of doing it was to install XP first, then install Vista, And modify the boot.ini to find the entry for XP.Is there any difference in modification of the boot.ini file when using sata drives, and is there any difference when making mods in Vista (As i have only edited the boot.ini in XP)
I'm trying to install XP on a new Fujitsu SATA hard drive (39T2785 R) in a Lenovo laptop (supplied with Vista on the original drive) and no diskette drive. The problem is that the only thing I can find for drivers is ONTRACK's Disk Manager...which creates a bootable floppy disk. I suspect the drivers are included in the .BIN file on the diskette, but I can't get to them.
I have an IBM Lenovo T61, with preinstalled Vista, I want to make an xp cd with the SATA drivers on, because it cant detect the hdd.I have been searching for a while, and some links tell me that I have to copy alot of files to a standalone folder, and edit txtsetup.sif and winnt.sif? is that right? I have a driver with a iastor.sys, but im wondering if thats the right driver.Yesterday, I made a boot cd, and it continued so I could format the hdd,( So I hoped it worked) But under the installation, it stop, because it couldnt find the driver.. include iastor.I have nlite, but dont know how it works.. Can someone plz tell me from the beginning of makeing a boot XP cd with my SATA drivers.
I have a custom made PC, with XP Home OEM. Since I lost the CD, I borrowed a friend's, but used my own product key. This seemed to be okay, untill it said something about having no hard disk/drive.I looked this up on the internet and people have mentioned SATA drivers. I think this is related to the motherboard? So will everything be okay if I get the SATA drivers for my motherboard? How do I find these? I looked on the Asus site, and it seemed too confusing.Incase you need to know, I have an Asus P5RD1-V
I need to repair my xp on my Sony VAIO VGN-AR11S and need to find HDD drivers to load while XP is loading using F6, I already tried Intel's divers and it not working
I'm trying to set up a dual-boot with Ubuntu and XP64. Initially I just had Ubuntu on my one sata hdd and XP on an ide hdd. I decided it'd be better running XP on the sata drive too, so I resized my linux partition with gparter, and created a new NTFS partition. The problem is, when I try to install XP onto the drive, it cannot seem to see the sata drive. Nothing was listed at all except the ide drives and my usb drive.I did some looking and found the 64 bit sata drivers for my motherboard, managed to load them onto a floppy and load them into the XP setup. This was all fine again until the time to select a partition, where it seemed to list the drive, but only shows 'Unknown disk' 'There is no disk in the drive'.I tried deleting the partition I made with gparter to see if XP could at least see the 'unallocated space' but to no avail.I even tried making a boot disk in nLite with the sata drivers, but it made no difference (not really surprisingly). If I try to use the 32 bit drivers that came with my mobo, it won't let me install XP.I'm all out of ideas to why it won't work.
I have a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R mobo. I don't need RAID but would like to use SATA AHCI mode (option in BIOS) which would allow actual SATA drivers instead of the IDE emulation (mode). All my hard drives and optical drives are SATA.I have found via google many old articles and instructions how to slipstream XP and SP2 but I have a newer XP SP2 CD. I just need to 'add' the SATA drivers that I can download from the Gigabyte driver downloads site.Does anyone know how to do this (i.e. slipstream XP SP2 w/ ICH9R SATA drivers?)?I read about using nLite and other programs/methods but I would like something simple that doesn't need floppies.
So I'm using my a8n-sli premium motherboard and have been just using 1 sata hard drive using Windows XP for about a year. I bought a second sata hard drive last week and installed Vista on it.I just can't figure out the correct boot.ini for this to work,I get an missing NTLD message, when I try to boot from Vista, but the XP one works with that configuration.I can boot off the Vista one fine if I set it in the bios boot order to come up before the XP hard drive, so the drive and the OS are fine
Isn't the problem going from vista back to xp an sata driver problem? If you would disable sata native mode then boot from the xp cd it should show the hard drive and any partitions. The biggest chore may be getting the drivers needed for XP and if is a laptop they rarely come with a floppy drive, so during the xp install I don't know if after you press F6 if you can remove the xp cd and put in a cd that you burned the needed drivers to if a floppy is not available. People should have the freedom to choose whatever operating system they want without all of the headaches
I have a seagate 160gb sata hdd partitioned to 40 and 120 gb. With Windows xp Home sp2 on the 40gb. If i format the 40gb hdd will i have to reinstall the sata drivers
I have an Fujitsu Amilo M1437G and have lost the Repair disks - it has XP Home Two Choices - buy a new set Obtain the SATA drivers and slipstream them onto a cd with XP Home.
My computer came preinstalled with a whole bunch of HP garbage I didn't want.. So I bought a copy of WINxp pro and tried to install.. Upon doing this It couldn't read my hard drive, which I later determined was due to the fact it is a SATA hard drive and the XP install cd doesnt have the drivers for it. Solution was, I changed a setting in my computer's BIOS to change the raid mode to IDE instead of SATA, then the install proccess went fine. Problem is now I have to keep it at IDE, and if I turn it back to SATA the computer retstarts after the Starting Windows screen with the Windows icon, I assume this is due to the fact that Windows didn't bother installing any SATA drivers since I installed in IDE mode... Could somone please point me in the right direction as to what I need to install/configure to allow WIN to boot up with my BIOS using SATA mode?
I wasn't sure where this thread should be placed. I want to install XP and it wouldn't detect my hard drive. Since I have no floppy drive I want to slipstream a xp cd with the drivers already there. I am using the program nLite to make the bootable disc. However the problem is that I can't find the drivers or i'm unsure what is correct. My controllers are... Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller Intel(R) ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controllers 2850.. But chipset is Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family.
installing xp on a sata drive as windows xp wont see the drive i know i need the sata drivers but cant find the rights ones for my board its gigabyte g31m-es2l chipset g31 express
i have a p5s800-vm mother board of asus and the setup of windows xp (pro-sp2) dont find my hard disc and i need to make a floopy from the drivers on the disc to help it found the hard disc. that what i do to make that floopy (as some nice guys here tell me to) i go to the drivers folder on the disc of the motherbord than chose "raid" folder in it i chose the floopyimage folder there i have 3 folders
1.964plus180(181) 2.964_180 3.965_965L
the guys here tell me to put the files of the 965_965L on the floopy without the foler imself. so in the 965_965L folder i have two files "SISRAID and "TXTSETUP.OEM" and aonter folder calld "raid" and in it i have to folders "winxp" and "win2000" and each folder has its own file. so what i do was to put only the "TXTSETUP.OEM" file on the floopy without noting else cause someone here tell me it all i need to do......
My old PC which was running XP died but I copied files to my external hard drive. They are now sitting on there as a dat file and I want to import and use these dat files in VISTA.
After the machine has been left alone for some time (at least long enough for the screen saver to kick in, which by default is set to 20 minutes, but the delay required may be more than that 20 minutes), you move the mouse or hit a key to clear the screen saver. The screen saver immediately goes away, leaving you with a blank desktop or blank wallpaper with a mouse pointer. At this point, you would expect to see a dialog box with the title "Computer Locked" that says "This computer is in use and has been locked. While it's in this state, the machine is not frozen: the mouse pointer will move, and the machine can be accessed over the network. If you wait long enough, which I've found to be on the order of 30-45 minutes or so, you will eventually see that "Computer Locked" dialog box, provided you move the mouse occasionally to prevent the screen saver from kicking in again.
Earlier I formatted a PC with windows XP on it, the minute I plugged it up, a notification came up and said "This device can perform faster on a high speed 2.0 USB port". It says that when I plug them up into any USB port on the computer itself. The thing is, it will pretty much hang the system until I disconnect the external HD. It won't freeze 100%. It's responsive but no applications will open while it's trying to recognize the external.
It sounds to me like a USB driver problem or something because I'd assume it'd still recognize the drive even if it wasn't performing in a high speed 2.0 USB port... Any way to reinstall USB drivers? Never done that before. I have to use Hiren's Boot CD if I want to transfer files, simply because Windows XP won't recognize it and keeps popping up the notification.
I bought this computer... stupidly i might add... from an unnamed (because i used to work there and recommend their business) rent to own store. For the run of the mill daily family pc it had been great! Now... when i bought this pc i ran the VISTA (<--- still leaves a bad taste in my mouth!!) home basic Operating system that came on it out of the box. After upgrading the 512MB of ram to 2GB and discovering vistas ram hungry method of operation... i chose like many others to downgrade to a more stable and familiar windows xp. I of course had friends that hooked me up with XP Black, Im sure you've heard of it by now. That runs on XP pro platform and ran great with the exception of the initial gathering drivers that seemed to not be available for my pc.
I recently put XP on a Compaq Presario C700 CTO that came preinstalled with Vista. I had to change some things in th Bios for Xp to install and now I need some drivers. Nothing is supported. I received links for various drivers someone told me i needed but none of them worked partly because i wasn't sure how to install them as the instructions were useless. The drivers I'm missing are Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Ethernet Controller, Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Sm Bus Controller, Video Controller, Video Controller (VGA Compatible), and one Unknown device which I think is my wireless (Atheros 06X Wireless Network Adapter). Any help as to how I can get these drivers installed and get XP working would be greatly appreciated.
I recently purchased a Gateway MT6451 notebook. The first day, it crashed, and said "No Operating System found". It ran very slow, and sluggish. I was not pleased, so I formated the drive and installed Windows XP Pro. I've scoured the internet for drivers, as Gateway only provides Vista drivers for my laptop. I've got just about everything working except for one item in Device Manager: "SM Bus Controller" I've read this has to do with the chipset on the M/B. So I went to the AMD site, but don't know which download I need.
I took Vista Home off of my laptop computer (Compaq Presario CQ60-202US) but I can't find drivers that will work with XP. Can I find drivers that will solve my problem?
