After the machine has been left alone for some time (at least long enough for the screen saver to kick in, which by default is set to 20 minutes, but the delay required may be more than that 20 minutes), you move the mouse or hit a key to clear the screen saver. The screen saver immediately goes away, leaving you with a blank desktop or blank wallpaper with a mouse pointer. At this point, you would expect to see a dialog box with the title "Computer Locked" that says "This computer is in use and has been locked. While it's in this state, the machine is not frozen: the mouse pointer will move, and the machine can be accessed over the network. If you wait long enough, which I've found to be on the order of 30-45 minutes or so, you will eventually see that "Computer Locked" dialog box, provided you move the mouse occasionally to prevent the screen saver from kicking in again.

For the run of the mill daily family pc it had been great! Now... when i bought this pc i ran the VISTA (<--- still leaves a bad taste in my mouth!!) home basic Operating system that came on it out of the box. After upgrading the 512MB of ram to 2GB and discovering vistas ram hungry method of operation... i chose like many others to downgrade to a more stable and familiar windows xp. I of course had friends that hooked me up with XP Black, Im sure you've heard of it by now. That runs on XP pro platform and ran great with the exception of the initial gathering drivers that seemed to not be available for my pc.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently put XP on a Compaq Presario C700 CTO that came preinstalled with Vista. I had to change some things in th Bios for Xp to install and now I need some drivers. Nothing is supported. I received links for various drivers someone told me i needed but none of them worked partly because i wasn't sure how to install them as the instructions were useless. The drivers I'm missing are Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Ethernet Controller, Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Sm Bus Controller, Video Controller, Video Controller (VGA Compatible), and one Unknown device which I think is my wireless (Atheros 06X Wireless Network Adapter). Any help as to how I can get these drivers installed and get XP working would be greatly appreciated.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a Gateway MT6451 notebook. The first day, it crashed, and said "No Operating System found". It ran very slow, and sluggish. I was not pleased, so I formated the drive and installed Windows XP Pro.
I've scoured the internet for drivers, as Gateway only provides Vista drivers for my laptop. I've got just about everything working except for one item in Device Manager: "SM Bus Controller"
I've read this has to do with the chipset on the M/B. So I went to the AMD site, but don't know which download I need.
I recently downgraded my Gateway Notebook MT6841 (http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/...4584Rsp3.shtml) from Vista to XP.for obvious reasons.I was thrilled to find out that they dont supply drivers for the Mobo's Video card, audio, and modem drivers for XP.

View 30 Replies View RelatedIn 2005, I bought a desktop PC, which included an installation CD for Windows XP. That computer broke down a few months ago, so I bought a laptop with Vista pre-installed. I have grown really tired of Vista and I would like to use XP for my laptop. So I used my old XP installation CD, but after I clicked "Install", a message appeared. It told me that the installation could not be done because the Windows system on the laptop (Vista) was newer than the XP on the CD. Can this be fixed in any way?

I had XP SP 2 running just fine, but I decided to give Vista RTM a try, so I installed Vista RTM on the first SATA drive (receated the partition). All drives have NTFS file systems.Since Nvidia does not have a decent Vista driver yet, I decided to do a XP installation on the 2nd SATA drive, just for when I want to play a game. And here is my problem:When booting of the XP SP2 CD, I can only see the USB drive available for the install, all the SATA drives are shown as "Unknown Disk" (No disk present).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to dual-boot this machine with Windows XP, and the reason is: Vista is making Halo:Combat Evolved (my favorite online game) very slow at 20fps. This may be nVidia's fault, but people who use XP and have the same (or closely similar) hardware and drivers as me don't have this problem. I have 50GB of free hard drive space. Windows Vista is my current OS. I love Halo so much I am willing to drop some more cash into my computer to dual boot with Vista and XP so I can play it s'more.

(It came with Vista).First thing I noticed was that I can not detect any wireless networks or connect to the internet now. I am assuming that I need that driver and a whole bunch of other XP drivers as well. I have visited websites where they have a whole laundry list of drivers to download for my situation. Before I go through the painful process of downloading and installing all of them, I want to make sure this is really what I need to do.

I have an old Kenwood shortwave radio that provides computer connectivity via RS232. However, my computer only has USB. Try as I might, I cannot get the USB-Serial adapter cable drivers to install correctly in XP. I have even tried additional drivers for other makes of adapter cable with the same result. There is always an exclamation point next to the USB-to-Serial Bridge and Human Interface Device entries in Device Manager and no new COM port is apparently created/opened. Trying to update or reinstall the drivers from there only gives some useless message akin to "can't find information on hardware" or "can't find software." Until this link is functional.

View 14 Replies View Relatedthe Systemax OEM PC we bought in 2006 had its Windows installation on a FAT32-formatted C: partition by default. I only noticed it this month, and after backing it up, I tried convert.exe based on what every-website-ever agreed on was the right instruction. Since it was running off of the partition it needed to convert, it asked me to run on the next restart, which it did. The process took at least 2 hours, but sometime in between the last time I checked up on it and when it finished, it apparently *undid* all the conversion it was doing, because the C: partition still read as FAT32.
