Cannot Downgrade From Vista To And Installing Drivers
Oct 8, 2008I recently put XP on a Compaq Presario C700 CTO that came preinstalled with Vista. I had to change some things in th Bios for Xp to install and now I need some drivers. Nothing is supported. I received links for various drivers someone told me i needed but none of them worked partly because i wasn't sure how to install them as the instructions were useless. The drivers I'm missing are Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Ethernet Controller, Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Sm Bus Controller, Video Controller, Video Controller (VGA Compatible), and one Unknown device which I think is my wireless (Atheros 06X Wireless Network Adapter). Any help as to how I can get these drivers installed and get XP working would be greatly appreciated.

Jan 1, 2006Whenever i install drivers on my pc, (i've tried graphics card drivers and wireless network card drivers) my pc stops working. When i installed the graphics card drivers, i tried testing the graphics on a game (counter-strike) but as soon as i got into the game, the pc flashes a blue screen, and reboots. I cant see what the blue screen says because it flashes on and off again to quick for me to read it. I decided to uninstall the graphics card drivers, and the game worked perfectly, but the graphics were REALLY bad. So i thought i might need to update some other drivers, so i tried to install my wireless network card, but when i finished installing the drivers when i had to restart my computer, it flashed the BSOD.... AGAIN! I need help urgently as im going to a LAN gaming comp called "rezidue" and its on in 2 weeks, i need my pc fixed by then! All these problems started when i upgraded my CPU. Everything was running smooth, and i was happily playing along on my computer, when i was asked what my FPS was in counter-strike, and i was all "mine are 65!" and there like "wow that sucks, mines 130" so i set out on my epic quest to get better FPS then everyone else and MAN THAT WAS A MISTAKE. I upgraded from my celeron 2.8ghz cpu to a P4 3.0ghz HT cpu, and thats when things started messing up on me. My entire system is as follows (incase it can help someone help me) P4 3.0ghz HT CPU, Microstar P4 motherboard, 128mb Nvidia Geforce mx4000 AGP x8 graphics card, 256MB ddr ram (recently brought new 1GB ddr ram off ebay just for rezidue! should be here soon!) Dec 27, 2008last night i decided to format my pc, so i formated it and tried to reinstall vista, the reinstallation worked fine but then it said i had to have a old version of windows for me to activate, because its an upgrade version.i then formated AGAIN and tried to clean-install XP so i could then upgrade to my vista but during my reinstallation of xp it stopped working. this is where it may get confusing haha, after the first part of the xp install it restarts (the first part meaning where it formats and copys all the files to memory) but just after it restarts it comes up with the screen "press any key to boot to CD." i let it go because ur not ment to boot to cd after that, but on that same screen it comes up with a few different coloured boxes on the screen and it just hangs.

Apr 19, 2008I've been casually looking for a new laptop for my Mom for her first computer. Now I am ready to get one, but just about the only choice is something pre-loaded with Vista. I have no experience with Vista and have heard more bad than good about it, therefore I think it would be easier to get her up and running if we're not both having to learn a new OS.
I upgraded my computer from ME to XP with few problems but wondered how difficult it would be to take a new laptop and go backwards. I know I'd most likely have to purchase a Full version of XP, but how much of a hassel is it to get all the drivers/XP versions of necessary pre-loaded software? Would a Vista compatible version of say Word work if I did this? Any other problems I haven't thought of?

Jun 4, 2008no sound in xp and yes i did purchase a laptop with Vista ultimate pre loaded in it,however i did not purchased from original vendor.i have the product key code for the vista and the xp.my problem is iinstalled xp discovered the sound problem and tried to go back to vista with a shadow copy i enter the product key code it gives me this error #0x8007000D.,what to now, i bought the laptop for my niece and since vista is not the most user friendly OS in the world i figured i would start her out with something not so difficult.I probly shouldnt have let her know about it until after i tried to install xp

The screen saver immediately goes away, leaving you with a blank desktop or blank wallpaper with a mouse pointer. At this point, you would expect to see a dialog box with the title "Computer Locked" that says "This computer is in use and has been locked. While it's in this state, the machine is not frozen: the mouse pointer will move, and the machine can be accessed over the network. If you wait long enough, which I've found to be on the order of 30-45 minutes or so, you will eventually see that "Computer Locked" dialog box, provided you move the mouse occasionally to prevent the screen saver from kicking in again.

Jun 30, 2008My friends XP crashed so I leant them my recovery disc (my old pc had XP this one has vista), when the xp recovery disc didn't work for them, they used my Acer Vista one which has half or more loaded vista and stalled probably because the lap top is to old to handle it. Anyway there is a blue Acer loading screen doing nothing and the vista programs run behind it which makes it difficult to see what you're doing. They brought it around to me as I can use this pc to see what I'm doing and try and fix there's more or less by feel, if that makes sense. They tried reinstalling my xp disc but vista seems to super seed it and it wont take, which doesn't surprise me.

For the run of the mill daily family pc it had been great! After upgrading the 512MB of ram to 2GB and discovering vistas ram hungry method of operation... i chose like many others to downgrade to a more stable and familiar windows xp. I of course had friends that hooked me up with XP Black, Im sure you've heard of it by now. That runs on XP pro platform and ran great with the exception of the initial gathering drivers that seemed to not be available for my pc.

I've scoured the internet for drivers, as Gateway only provides Vista drivers for my laptop. I've got just about everything working except for one item in Device Manager: "SM Bus Controller"
I've read this has to do with the chipset on the M/B. So I went to the AMD site, but don't know which download I need.

Installing Over Vista No Partitions?
Oct 11, 2009I, as do most, hate Windows Vista. Even after turning off the UAC and removing components that i found unnecessary, I still found problems. I much prefer Windows XP. Instead of manually removing components, security settings, etc., I decided just to remove Vista itself. I have searched and searched for a forum all over the internet and all i can find are threads about partitioning of about replacing vista on a laptop (which apparently has SATA driver problems or something to that effect). So I was wondering a few things:
1) Is there a way to install XP over Vista directly?

However my keyboard isn't recognized so I can't begin the install. It's a USB and I've tried it in other ports. When I pop out the cd, and start the pc normally, the keyboard works. Oct 20, 2007I decided to upgrade to Vista today from Windows Xp. Rather than doing the upgrade process, I decided to start off with a fresh format/install.
after the first reboot in the Vista setup process (where Vista attempts to load data from the HDD) the system would just sit there after post as if the Vista loader couldn't properly detect the partition. I currently don't have time to troubleshoot the Vista problem with my system, so in desperation I have tried to go back to XP. I am able to boot into Windows XP setup, format the drive, and copy over the beginning essential files. However, after the system reboots after the initial copy of the data... XP is not capable of booting from the hard drive. this was not a problem before I tried to install Vista.
To check if a problem had occurred with the drive, I installed Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu is able to boot from the drive without any problems. However....... when Ubuntu loads grub, it detects the following on the MBR: The Vista loader appears to be preventing Windows XP from properly booting from the hard drive. The drive is a Western Digital 320gb. I have 30 gbs set aside for Windows to boot from. The rest of the drive is another partition with files I cannot afford to lose.

Mar 2, 2008I have a Sony RS-220 desktop w/ XP home w/ SP2 & all updates since that's unable to auto install generic device drivers. I discovered this when I tried plugging in a couple different USB flash drives & it would just stop at the found new hardware wizard. Running the wizard w/ "install the software automatically" & also enabling "also search windows updates" returns unable to find device driver. The USB flash drive was the only bang in device manager. I uninstalled the usb controllers, rebooted and amazingly the controllers wouldn't auto reinstall. Suspecting the behavior extended to more then just USBs/the chipset I uninstalled some unneeded devices (56k modem & 1394) & they also wouldn't auto reinstall.
I went to the sony website & strangely Sony doesn't list the chipset available for download w/ the other drivers I downloaded the chipset direct from intel & installed it but that didn't work either. I've tried many other things to no avail. Malware scans (spybot, AVG AV, rootkitrevealer)...all came up clean. I've tried a new admin user profile, cCleaner registry cleanup, resetting registry permissions w/ subinACL, setting related windows services to automatic, checkdisk /r. Another thing I thought about doing was uninstalling the PCI controller, but I think I recall that can get ugly. Ultimately the only thing that allowed me to get my usb controllers, usb hubs, modem, 1394, & usb drive working was to "install from a list or specific location" & "include this location in the search" C:WINDOWSinf. Does anybody have any idea how I can restore the functionality of generic drivers auto installing & not having to point to an INF directory? Any insight is greatly appreciated.
System Wont Work After Installing Over Vista As A Dual Boot?

(It came with Vista).First thing I noticed was that I can not detect any wireless networks or connect to the internet now. I am assuming that I need that driver and a whole bunch of other XP drivers as well. I have visited websites where they have a whole laundry list of drivers to download for my situation. Before I go through the painful process of downloading and installing all of them, I want to make sure this is really what I need to do.
