I have after gettting a new hp computer and XP is installed in it and I got a disc for vista professional with it too. If i wanted to install vista on my computer would all my files be deleted

When I attempt to delete multiple files, evertime I click a file for deletion it makes a copy of the file, so that when I delete the file the copy is still present. View 9 Replies View RelatedBy mistake I unzipped some Microsoft Flight Simulator texture files to my desktop [from a safe site I have been using for years] instead of the intended FS04 folder. I deleted the files and cleared the recycle bin, the next time I turned on the system all the files were on the desktop again. I restored the system back a few days before the files were unzipped, no luck, the files reappear every time my computer is turned on.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been casually looking for a new laptop for my Mom for her first computer. Now I am ready to get one, but just about the only choice is something pre-loaded with Vista. I have no experience with Vista and have heard more bad than good about it, therefore I think it would be easier to get her up and running if we're not both having to learn a new OS.
I upgraded my computer from ME to XP with few problems but wondered how difficult it would be to take a new laptop and go backwards. I know I'd most likely have to purchase a Full version of XP, but how much of a hassel is it to get all the drivers/XP versions of necessary pre-loaded software? Would a Vista compatible version of say Word work if I did this? Any other problems I haven't thought of?
First I booted from the Windows XP cd because I wanted to format the C drive. I had forgotten I had my external hard drive still plugged in and I accidently deleted the partition for it and created a new one. I didn't FORMAT it, but then when I started up my computer, all the files were gone. So does that mean my files are premanently deleted or can I save the files somehow?.

My big hard drive just came up as a grossly smaller size and I got a message from the OS saying "this drive needs to be formatted."How I got here is kind of long, but bear with me. It started a few months ago with my screen randomly not working when I'd turn on or restart my computer, as if my cable wasn't connected or something. I spent hours and days on forums and help sites trying to figure it out, with the general response that either my crappy motherboard was dying or my video card.
D: all my stuff. programs, files, etc. Nothing os'ey so it'd be relatively protected. important.
I, as do most, hate Windows Vista. Even after turning off the UAC and removing components that i found unnecessary, I still found problems. I much prefer Windows XP. Instead of manually removing components, security settings, etc., I decided just to remove Vista itself. I have searched and searched for a forum all over the internet and all i can find are threads about partitioning of about replacing vista on a laptop (which apparently has SATA driver problems or something to that effect). So I was wondering a few things:
1) Is there a way to install XP over Vista directly?
First of all is it worth my time or does vista have too many problems. my main concern is that i do not have the xp disc and if i want to go back to xp should i even bother.i do have the hp recovery tools disc for xp.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI found this forum and it solved the BSOD problem by autodetecting the hard drive. Yay, I finally got the Windows Setup screen. However my keyboard isn't recognized so I can't begin the install. It's a USB and I've tried it in other ports. When I pop out the cd, and start the pc normally, the keyboard works. Windows Vista won't start...I'm guessing because I have to change the drive configuration back to where it was. I really want this Vista gone

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently put XP on a Compaq Presario C700 CTO that came preinstalled with Vista. I had to change some things in th Bios for Xp to install and now I need some drivers. Nothing is supported. I received links for various drivers someone told me i needed but none of them worked partly because i wasn't sure how to install them as the instructions were useless. The drivers I'm missing are Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Ethernet Controller, Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Sm Bus Controller, Video Controller, Video Controller (VGA Compatible), and one Unknown device which I think is my wireless (Atheros 06X Wireless Network Adapter). Any help as to how I can get these drivers installed and get XP working would be greatly appreciated.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI decided to upgrade to Vista today from Windows Xp. Rather than doing the upgrade process, I decided to start off with a fresh format/install.
after the first reboot in the Vista setup process (where Vista attempts to load data from the HDD) the system would just sit there after post as if the Vista loader couldn't properly detect the partition. I currently don't have time to troubleshoot the Vista problem with my system, so in desperation I have tried to go back to XP. I am able to boot into Windows XP setup, format the drive, and copy over the beginning essential files. However, after the system reboots after the initial copy of the data... XP is not capable of booting from the hard drive. this was not a problem before I tried to install Vista.
To check if a problem had occurred with the drive, I installed Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu is able to boot from the drive without any problems. However....... when Ubuntu loads grub, it detects the following on the MBR: The Vista loader appears to be preventing Windows XP from properly booting from the hard drive. The drive is a Western Digital 320gb. I have 30 gbs set aside for Windows to boot from. The rest of the drive is another partition with files I cannot afford to lose.
I managed to create a new partition on my Compaq Presario C700 laptop and install XP. (It came with Vista).First thing I noticed was that I can not detect any wireless networks or connect to the internet now. I am assuming that I need that driver and a whole bunch of other XP drivers as well. I have visited websites where they have a whole laundry list of drivers to download for my situation. Before I go through the painful process of downloading and installing all of them, I want to make sure this is really what I need to do.

I was running AVG anti virus. Now I removed AVG and installed Microsoft supplied security essential software. View 3 Replies View RelatedBesides the usual TEMP files and Temporary Internet Files (which, by the way, I have on a RAM disk, so they are automatically deleted), I wonder if the log files created by installations can be deleted. I have dozens like KB890923.log created during windows update, as well as the windowsupdate.log itself - fast approaching 3Mb. Would deleting these affect future updates? I also have several 3Mb+ CDF files - two of which current and with names like {000-001-A0F12...}.cdf and .bak, but others which apparently haven't been modified for 3 years, with names like Ctdv10k1.cdf, Ctdv10k2.cdf and Ctdvaudy.cdf - I imagine these files contain info about the multimedia devices and drivers installed - if I delete the old ones and keep the recent ones, am I safe?

When i turned the PC back on again i had lost all the files, pictures, internet history and word documents off my user side of the PC, i checked the other user area and the the files and folders are still intact. The thing that is puzzling me is the fact whenever i save a file/picture/document to my desktop and subsequently turn off the pc after use. It seems to automatically delete the file/picture/document off my desktop and is no were to be found on countless searches i've done on all my harddrives.

Files which are being deleted are flashed so quickly that I can't determine what they are. Afterwards there is some corruption, the extent of which I haven't determined, except that my Connection Settings for MSN9 Dial-up are clobbered, and I can't get online. I've been successfully recovering from this situation by doing a System Restore, which has been working well for the past two months, but I need to determine what can be done to resolve the problem.

And when I go to recycle bin properties c: drive is just not there. I can see my d: and g: drive but the c: drive is just not there. Does anybody know what the problem might be, and how to fix it?

I have fixed the problem temporarily by renaming the c: Recycle folder and then letting Windows create a new bin, then deleting the renamed folder. This lasts for a day or two then the problem returns. I'm looking for a more permanent fix short of reformatting.

I think one of my kids may have delete some criticle files.i found a bunch of family jpegs and 2 cab files in the recycle bin. I restored all the files but have been having slow performance. I am unable to send large emails without getting memory errors if i try to access Device Manager i get the following error:MMC cannot open the file c:windowssystem32devmgmnt.msc. This may because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file. I have adminstrator rights and have tried logging in as another admiinistrator. I've reinstalled SP2 but that didn't help. Short of reinstalling XP (which would be a PITA)

I have tried and tried to get used to Vista (6 months) but as I am disabled and my brain doesn't always compute efficiently, I've had difficulties. Mostly with getting things recognized on the small network in my home. My other computers run XP and I wonder if there is not some conflict with the different operating systems trying to access the same files and printers? Finally I just decided to go back to XP..
