I was thinking I would like to upgrade XP to vista, without having all my files packed in one folder with the a folder extension "old". So I decided to partition my drive, hopefully I want to know is it safe to install XP on that partition even though you already have XP on another?

I have a fresh install of XP SP2 on one of my drives, installed Sunday night. Drive was formatted first. Yesterday my boss told me that Microsoft had a "Vista Upgrade Advisor" to see if I could run Vista on my computer. I also had a fresh copy if IE7 with all the updates fresh installed from Microsoft.I downloaded the Advisor from Microsoft Download Center, started installing it, and had to install .NET framework to continue. There was another program that had to be ran first, I think it was the Microsoft Installer update. There were four choices, but there was no description to clue me in on which I needed.After installing the two, I then installed the Update Advisor. It gave me an error message like it was not correctly installed, please re-install. I went to Add/Remove Programs and got an error message like: run32dll.exe error This is not a valid Win32 application. All I could go into was My Computer. As of last night upon restart: my antivirus, IE7, all programs, all Control Panel programs, my CD and DVD burners, Comodo Firewall all give the same message. And I CAN'T uninstall the darn upgrade advisor!
At this point I am considering doing another fresh XP SP2 install, since I had not added any programs except for Avast, Comodo, IE7, and D-Link software. All programs are legal and downloaded from their respective official websites. I could not even run the XP installation CD to run a repair, or remove. F12 upon reboot is my option.But does anyone know why this happened? Or is there an easier way to fix this? I don't really think it is a virus unless the above mentioned websites has one.
Now when I start XP I get the option to load a previous version of windows or (default) install the new OS As I say the second option comes up as default and gives barely 2 seconds to select the first option and continue with starting the computer How can I eradicate the option to install the new OS?

I upgrade to WMP 10 and all my existing mpeg files don't work. I just get sound and a black screen. I see quite a few others posting similar problems. It now appears that my DVD Encoders are no longer compatible with WMP 10. Hmmm they were fine with WMP9...what gives? now it appears I must PURCHASE a new set of encoders, conveniently located through the WMP10 "Plug-Ins" drop down menu. And don't think you can go back to WMP9, it also seems that my system restore point created before the upgrade mysteriously fails to work.

I purchased the following system from Costco and was glad I was able to purchase the system complete without having to add components after the sale. I have tried and tried to get used to Vista (6 months) but as I am disabled and my brain doesn't always compute efficiently, I've had difficulties. Mostly with getting things recognized on the small network in my home. One possible solution I thought of is using the registry files from my other computer running Windows XP. I don't even know if this is possible, but if it is, how can I transfer the files. I would put them on a CD but the CD drive won't open when the system repair tool is running, and they're too big to fit on a floppy disk, even one at a time (the system and software files are both over 2mb.)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make a dual boot system Vista/XP with my HP Media Center purchased in 2007 with Vista pre-installed. Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista
Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:?
Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation?

So far I created a partition on the same drive (C: ) as Vista and installed XP on it. how do I choose between Vista and XP when my computer boots up? After it finishes the initial installation and restarts it says to press any key to boot from the CD. I wait without pressing anything and than it says that there was an error reading the disk.
