I need to create two unqiue shortcuts that will copy two different folders contents and overwrite to another folder (including all sub-folders & files).The destination folder/subs will be the same location for both of the other two folders being copied.
View 2 RepliesThe registry on one of my computers is corrupt and if I try to copy the files from the WindowsRepair folder using the windows system repair tool, I'm told the files cannot be found. One possible solution I thought of is using the registry files from my other computer running Windows XP. I don't even know if this is possible, but if it is, how can I transfer the files. I would put them on a CD but the CD drive won't open when the system repair tool is running, and they're too big to fit on a floppy disk, even one at a time (the system and software files are both over 2mb.)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI made the change below however, if I click on a folder in the left hand "Folders" pane, it works as before and opens the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.
However, if I click on any folders in the right hand (files pane) a new windows explorer window opens a displays the "my documents".
The same thing happens if you click on a shortcut to a folder. Instead of the folder opening, it opens a new window and displays "my documents".
This problems started when I added a new function to the folder file folder file type properties to print out the contents of a folder by calling a batch file that piped the content to a file.
In the file association for file folders in the advanced section I now have three functions
- the afore mentioned 'create file list'
- explore (the default), and
- find
For the folder file type I just have:
- explore and
- open
Any suggestions on how to put things back to the way Windows Explorer always worked before make clicking folders in the right hand pane open them up properly in the same window as per clicking them on the left hand pane?
I have hundreds of photos in subfolders, the photo names being prefixedwith a 4-digit sequence number.I would like to be able to create a text file containing all the files
sorted by File Name and then showing the sub-folder that they are in -is that possible?
I have XP SP3, and have recently discovered that when Restarting the system, after logging on, Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird automatically run. There are no shortcuts for them in the Start Up Folder, and they do not start automatically after a complete shut down/fresh start -- only after a restart. After they're up and running, everything works normal.
View 8 Replies View RelatedToday I had uninstalled several unused programs with the Add-Remove utility of Windows XP.Then I also unchecked a few services in the 'msconfig' (System Configuration Utility) and rebooted.Now, when I right-click on any folder or folder short-cut, the menu shows up only after waiting a full 3 minutes. The mouse cursor turns into the 'busy' indication and the system freezes during that time. The same scenario happens when I try to delete any folder (or folder-shortcut) using the 'Del' key on the keyboard. There is no such issue for any of the files.I would like to know what exactly is causing this problem and how it can be resolved. My PC is working fine now otherwise, and seems much faster than it was yesterday.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm using Windows XP Pro and I open folders on my computer with shortcut like "Ctrl + Alt + "Letter key". To get this to work I created hidden shortcuts on my Desktop and under: Properties/"Shortcut" tab/"Shortcut key" Field. I added a shortcut key, by then pressing this particular "shortcut key" the folder attach to the shortcut folder will open. So far so good but once in a while out of the blue these shortcuts stop working all at once, restarting the computer ect doesn't fix the problem, the only way I found the shortcuts will start working again is by clearing the "shortcut key" field under Properties/"Shortcut" Tab then clicking ok, opening up properties again and adding once again the shortcut key on the "shortcut field" Why Do I have to keep reentering the shortcut keys on the shortcut folders for this to work? Any idea what can I do to prevent the shortcut command from stop working on the future?
View 14 Replies View RelatedWent through and individually highlighted folders (containing pictures) to be copied onto cd-r...then clicked on "copy these folders"...everytime the message comes up that there is no disc. I take the disc out( brand new disc), put it back in...same message. I have even tried dvd drive. Nothing. Any suggestions? Want to back things up but don't seem to be able. I read on microsoft.com there is a Backup with Win XP--my understanding it's on the win xp cd...and you have to install it...could've misunderstood...because I tried that and come up with nothing. Input please....
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to speed things up for my brother who has dialup Internet. He's rebuilding his PC with his XP CD which is SP1. I have a copy of SP2 in a folder on my PC so I figured I'd just burn it to CD for him. The problem is, my Cd burner reports an error when it tries to burn this. It burns other folders just fine, but reports an error (media error-but on several different disks from the same package that works fine burning other folders) when trying to burn the SP2 folder. (I can copy the folder to a different location & the same problem occurs when burning from the different location-so I don't think it's a corrupted file/folder although I wouldn't want to be too dogmatic on that. It could be a type of corruption that Explorer handles OK but the CD burner (Sonic/Roxio CD Creator, version 10 IIRC) doesn't.) My PC is 2.8GHz P4, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD with plenty of free space. WinXP, SP2 running AVG Internet Security. Hmmm-haven't tried it with AV turned off, think that might make a difference?

In the attached screen shots, you will see I have no folder trees in any of the pop up Add, Move, or Copy pop ups in Explorer and Windows Media Player. I have no clue if this can be restored to show again. This has happened before I upgraded Media Player so it shouldnt be that. I'm thinking Windows Corruption somewhere.

Clicking on ok cancells the whole cut/copy operation, which can leave you wondering what has or has not been moved and requires trawling through source and target location. Gets a bit annoying when it happens fairly often.
View 14 Replies View RelatedToday I copied a large folder containing multiple Access databases, Excel workbooks, Word docs, etc. to a totally blank jump drive like I have done 100s of times before. But for the first time in my 'computer life', which started in 1980(!), a file appeared on it with the name EA DATA.SF. Googling the file told me that it was a system file and had something to do with Extended Attributes (whatever that is). But the file is protected; attempts to delete it, even using the command prompt and first removing all attributes (attrib -h -s -r ea*.sf) does not allow it to be deleted.
The Google search showed many cases like this, but none where there was a clear, easy way to delete the file. My questions are:What is this file for/what does it do? Why am I seeing it for the first time in 30 years? How can I delete it. or SHOULD I delete it?
I'm trying to back up some stuff to an external hard drive. And there are errors in movies that I have ripped (because I either forget to put them back in the case or they get lost) some movies and whenever I try to move the video file (ripped int a AUDI0_TS file and a VIDEO_TS file) I have an error box where the title of the window in the blue bar says "Error Copying File or Folder" and in the window (the gray part) it says "Cannot copy VTS_01_2" Data error (cyclic redundancy check).". And then I click the "OK" button and it stops the transfer. The VTS_01_2 is sometimes replaced with whatever file that cannot be transferred or that is causing the problem. I used DVDShrink and DVD43 to back them up. I am running Windows XP sp3 and transferring them onto a 300 GB hard drive.

You can customize a folder with a "folder type" - Documents, Pictures, Music, Video, etc - which comes with a default view and a list of default attributes most relevant to the type (artist and album title for music, dimension for video, etc). You can also setup so that the settings are "memorized". However, the memory seems to be quite short term for some of my folders. They tend to randomly reset themselves and there seems to be a consistent but unrecognizable pattern. For example, my "My Documents" folder is always changed to a pictures folder, while some of my music folders are changed to video

i updated my windows XP home edition to service pack2, but i recently found out that my system32 folder is missing from C:WINDOWS.I also use search to look for it and i couldn't find it anywhere on My Computer.I have also been getting an Application error recently and i have noticed this after i deleted my AVG anti-virus (I'm not sure whether deleting AVG was the problem).The error says:"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.Sometimes the application is rundll32.exe, explorer.exe and when i turn on my computer it says that the error is userinit.exe at the welcome screen.
